Saint James won the opening coin toss and elected to
receive. The Southside kickoff went unintentionally sideways
and then curved backwards going out of bounds at the 43 yard line
- a 3 yard net kickoff. With the 5 yards added for the kick
out of bounds, the Trojans started on the Panther 38. Cosner
Harrison, who only needed to carry 10 times this evening, picked
up 5 on first down and then K.J. Jackson tossed his first of four
touchdowns on the next play - a short pass to Ziggy Holloway who
split defenders on the catch and was grabbed at about the four
yard line, but wrestled and fought and dragged a pair of tacklers
into the endzone on WSFA's "Hot Play of the Week". Jake
Huff, the 2021 place kicker, attempted his first extra point of
the season and converted it for a Saint James 7 - 0 lead less than
a minute into the game. That would be the first of Huff's
eight consecutive extra points made in one game - the eight extra
points tied four other kickers for a school record, and only he,
Jin Kim (2017 versus Trinity) and Graham Sutter (2005 versus
Monroe County) were the only kickers to convert a perfect 8 for 8.
A nice kickoff return by the Panthers out to the 41 yard line gave
them decent field position, but after a 7 yard pass completion on
fourth down, the next two plays results in no yards gained and a
punt attempt. Well, it was supposed to be a punt.
Saint James called for an all out punt block, forcing the punter
to take the ball in desperation for a first down. He almost
succeeded, amazingly getting back to the line of scrimmage, the
Trojan 48, but Saint James turned over the Panthers on
downs. Six plays later, the Trojans had doubled their
lead. Riley Britton caught a pass for 25 yards, the final 10
or so after breaking a host of tackles, to advance the ball to the
Panther 15. Three plays later, Harrison got the call and was
virtually untouched from 11 yards out and the Trojans were up 14 -
0 with still half of the first quarter remaining.
Huff's kickoff went into the endzone, the first kickoff touchback
of the season for the Trojans, and what would be his first of
three. Disaster struck Southside on another punt attempt as
a very high snap was corralled by the punter, but he was downed at
the 14 yard line giving Saint James one of many short
fields. Harrison ran for five and Jackson called his own
number for 6 on the first two plays, and then Harrison was
rewarded with the final three yards for another Saint James
touchdown. This touchdown pushed Saint James over the 11,000
point mark all time - 11,002 after the Huff extra point gave the
Trojans a 21 point lead.
The Panthers finally got a punt off, and then the Trojans hit a
spell of the doldrums - hard to imagine in a six touchdown first
half. Two high snaps over Jackson in the shotgun resulted in
a total loss of 42 yards, beating down the rushing yardage total
for the night, and Saint James wisely punted on a difficult at
best fourth down and 47. On the opening play of the second
quarter, the Panthers finally converted a fourth down into their
initial first down of the game. Southside receiver
Derick Smith, who would eventually catch 9 passes for 150 yards,
picked up his first two receptions, but Saint James forced another
punt at midfield. A Harrison 21 yard run pushed the Trojans
down to the Panther 36, but the Southside defense stiffened and
forced an endzone punt.
Southside embarked on an 80 yard drive to shake up the momentary
blahness of a quick paced game earlier. Jaderious Wilkins
caught a 26 yard pass, and a later defensive pass interference
penalty, the only accepted penalty the Trojans would commit in the
game, advanced the ball deepest into Trojan territory at that
point, at the 27. After Smith picked up 6 on a run,
quarterback Roosevelt Towns found Smith in the corner of the
endzone where his height advantage was enough to corral a
touchdown pass for the first Panther score of the game. A
two point conversion pass failed, but suddenly the lead was 21 - 6
and Southside appeared to have some momentum.
Not for long. Jackson ran for 11 yards on the first play of
the next game and 15 yards were added on for a horsecollar
tackle. Clint Houser caught an 11 yard pass, and after a
Harrison run Jackson found Holloway for the second time in the
game, and for their second touchdown connection, this one of 25
yards. Huff's extra point advanced the margin again to
a three score game at 28 - 6.
Two plays after an out of bounds kick, Towns launched a well
overthrown pass which was picked off by Ethan Beard. Beard
took the reception on the near sideline and literally outraced
chasing players for a 69 yard pick six touchdown and a 35 - 6 lead
with just over two minutes remaining. But there was still
time for more scoring, as the Trojans held the Panthers three and
out and Saint James took over on its own 46 yard line with 80
seconds to go. Several short pass completions and a Harrison
run of 10 yards gave the Trojans first down at the Panther
36. Jackson lofted a pass to Harrison in the slot and he
began churning up yards and through potential tacklers on his way
to a 36 yard reception for a touchdown, his third of what would be
four scores. Huff's extra point gave Saint James a 42 - 6
lead as halftime neared. Southside actually threatened in
the last 32 seconds as Smith picked up 46 yards on a first down
catch and run, and eventually Southside would drive as deep as the
Trojan 20 before running out of time on an inbounds catch and run
which only gained nine yards.
At halftime, as part of a "Hollywood Homecoming", Brooke Bender
was crowned as the new Homecoming Queen for 2022 in a smooth,
joyous, and elaborate presentation.
The kicking game of Southside caused them more pain to start the
third quarter. A punt from the 27 yard line was shanked and
spun so wildly it actually traveled backwards. Ziggy
Holloway, who was playing up for the punt defense to guard against
a potential fake, grabbed the ball no one else wanted to and
appeared to be on his way to a 19 yard punt return for a
touchdown, probably one of the shortest ever of a non-blocked or
deflected kick. However, several defenders knocked him out
of bounds inside the one yard line to prevent the kick return
score. No matter, Harrison scored his fourth touchdown on
the next play off the left side and Saint James was just a point
short of the magical 50 mark.
As the Trojan substitutes began flooding the field, Harrison Allen
was the lucky recipient of a lost fumble and Saint James was in
business on the Panther 36. Offsetting penalties negated the
first play, but Jackson on his final play of the game lofted a
pass to Beard who somehow spun and sped his way through the
Panther secondary for a touchdown and the Trojans were cruising at
56 - 6 still in the third quarter. The Panthers would score
a touchdown on their next drive after two sizable pass catches by
Smith and a 23 yard touchdown run by Jaderious Wilkins.
Smith would catch a two point pass in what would eventually be the
final score of 56 - 14 even though more than a quarter remained in
the game.
Finally a "somewhat" version of a running clock was instituted to
speed the game along in the fourth quarter. The Trojans
drove once inside the Panther 40 before losing a fumble, their
first turnover of the season now nearly halfway over. The
regular season that is. But Saint James took another step
toward another playoff berth and possibly another region
championship before returning to the big stadium, Troy's own
Veterans Stadium, to face off against 5A Charles Henderson six
days later.
