GAME
RECAP (as best we could - could not obtain a proper
Greensboro player roster)
Greensboro won the opening toss but elected to defer to the
second half. Saint James got off to a great start as
Wils Johnson returned the short kickoff to the Trojan
42. K.J. Jackson, who had as much time as he needed to
pass throughout the first half (until the reserves took
over), completed a 25 yarder to Cooper Wright on first
down. After an incomplete pass, Cosner Harrison picked
up the first 14 of his *** yards for another first down, and
then Jackson found Ethan Beard for a quick strike touchdown
of 21 yards on the fourth scrimmage play of the game.
Wynston Redden's extra point, which almost hit highway 14
outside the stadium, gave Saint James a quick 7 - 0 lead.
The Raiders were unable to garner any net positive yardage,
and a short punt was fielded by Riley Britton just inside
the 50 yard line. Three plays later, the Trojans had
doubled their lead. Harrison picked up 25 yards on
consecutive runs, and then Jackson lofted a pass to a wide
open Clint Houser in the far corner of the endzone, sunken a
bit for drainage purposes, for a 29 yard touchdown pass and
Redden's second kick did reach highway 14 which fortunately
was devoid of traffic at the time giving Saint James a 14 -
0 lead.
A tricky kickoff forced a lateral return which was stopped
by the Trojans at the Raiders' own 6 yard line. Two
plays gained two yards, and a fake punt attempt gained some
yardage, but Saint James stopped the runner 2 yards short of
a potential first down and left the Trojans with a very
short field at the 14 yard line. Harrison ran for 9 on
first down, and then Cooper Wright caught his second pass of
the game, this one in isolation in the endzone for a 5 yard
touchdown. The Redden extra point hit the upright, but
Saint James was up by 20 points barely 9 minutes into the
contest.
Greensboro appeared to be on their way to another three and
out, but a bad snap on the punt was grabbed and desperation
apparently inspired the Raider kicker as he took the ball
and found plenty of running room all the way to midfield for
their first down of the season. However, after several
incompletions, Greensboro turned the ball over on downs once
more and Saint James started the second quarter with first
down at their own 45. Harrison ran for 11 on first
down into Raider territory. On the next play, Cole
Anderson took a handoff and darted 25 yards into an opening
down to the 21. From there, three consecutive Harrison
runs had the Trojans in the endzone once more and the Redden
extra point boosted the lead to 27 - 0 early in quarter
number 2.
A Ziggy Holloway interception on a deep pass attempt on the
first play of the next series gave the Trojans a quick
possession. Holloway was rewarded with a 21 yard pass
to move the ball into Raider territory, and once again three
Harrison runs resulted in another touchdown, the final carry
an 18 yarder, and a 34 - 0 lead after the Redden extra
point.
Greensboro was again stuck deep in their territory, and
turned the ball over again on downs at the Raider 14.
However, this time the Trojan offense started in
reverse. Holding penalties on consecutive plays pushed
the ball back to the 32, and a rare sack of quarterback
Jackson left Saint James with a second down and 41 from the
45 yard line. No sweat. Jackson called his own
number on a run, as he had on one of the holding plays, and
made up nearly half of the yardage rushing down to the 21
yard line. On third down, Jackson connected with
Holloway over the middle who made a fine catch at the first
down line and swirved into the endzone for the sixth
consecutive touchdown. The Redden extra point meant
the end of the night for the offensive starters, and many of
the defensive ones as well.
The Trojans actually got another chance to score after
Brayden Corley intercepted his second pass in as many weeks,
but the conservative Trojans merely downed the ball more
than content with their 41 point halftime lead.
As has been the case in two of the three previous games, a
running clock of some kind was instituted for the second
half. With a lightning threat not terribly far away,
the quarters were also shortened to 8 minutes each.
The Raiders moved the ball on the first possession of the
third quarter, and appeared to have a 71 yard touchdown run
down the far sidelines until Jimmy Dickens ran down a
potential scorer. Several plays later, on fourth down
from the Trojan 13, Paxton Wingard blitzed and was credited
with a solo sack back at the 19 yard line keeping the
potential shutout in order.
Chase Perry did complete his first pass of the season, a 5
yarder to Andrew Shalayda, but Saint James punted, its only
punt of the evening, on the first play of the rapidly moving
second half. Ty'quan Lewis broke loose on a 32 yard
touchdown to break up the shut out, and neither team was in
an overly big hurry to run plays - just in a big hurry to
run up the grass knoll to the dressing rooms. Two
Trojan running plays for 10 yards and game over! Saint
James improved to 3 - 1 overall and 2 - 0 in the region with
another region game upcoming - Homecoming against a
distantly familiar foe - the Southside Selma Panthers.
Thanks to the NFHS broadcast replay for helping create the
stats.
Notable - both Jackson and Harrison surpassed the 4000
career yard mark in passing and rushing respectively in this
game. Jackson has 4075 yards passing and Harrison has
4032 yards rushing.
