Saint James moved the ball continuously on the homestanding
Warriors. led by nearly 200 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns by
Cosner Harrison and 200 yards passing plus one touchdown toss and
one touchdown run by K.J. Jackson as the Trojans defeated Dale
County in a very hard-hitting physical matchup 45 - 20.
Saint James did not convert scores on only two of their drives,
their first and their last. On the first scrimmage play,
Clint Houser took in a 29 yard catch and run from Jackson.
Harrison's first three runs netted 28 yards, but a holding penalty
deep in Warrior territory forced a Jake Huff 42 yard field goal
attempt. The kick was plenty long enough but just wide
left. Dale County went three and out on their opening drive
and after what would be their only punt of the evening gave the
Trojans the ball at their own 34. They embarked on a seven
play drive, exclusively on the drive, primarily fueled by
Harrison, including a 28 yard run to convert a third down.
Ethan Beard added 19 yards on his only carry of the game, and
Harrison was rewarded with the touchdown after an offside penalty
from the 2. Jake Huff made the first of all six of his extra
point attempts and Saint James was up 7 - 0 with 5 minutes
remaining in the opening quarter.
Dale County drove as deep as the Trojan 26 before a fumbled snap
was recovered by Huff - the first of three Warrior
turnovers. Early in the second quarter Clayton Craft and
Bradley Thomas caught double digit yardage passes giving the
Trojans first down at the Warrior 9. There Harrison runs
later Saint James was in the endzone again with a 14 - 0 lead
early in the second quarter.
A block in the back penalty on the ensuing kickoff forced the
Warriors back to their own 8 yard line. After a luckily
recovered fumble, a sack, and a delay of game penalty, quarterback
Alex Banks, who finished with 280 yards passing, found receiver
Derrion Crossley in the open on a slant route after a Trojan
defender tripped and Crossley raced 82 yards for a Warrior
touchdown. The extra point was blocked, but the lead was cut
to 14 - 6 midway through the second quarter. An
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the touchdown forced the
kickoff back to the 25, and Cooper Wright's return of a somewhat
short kickoff gave the Trojans a short field at the Warrior
44. Thomas caught a 29 yard pass on first down, but a
quarterback sack led to another Huff field goal attempt.
This time he connected from 27 yards, and the Trojans had an 11
point lead as the half wore down.
The Warriors fumbled on their first play deep in Trojan territory,
and Saint James pounced with a quick score. Jackson
converted a third and 7 with an 8 yard quarterback scamper, and
then audibilized into a 4 yard power sneak up the middle for
another touchdown. Huff's extra point gave Saint James a 24
- 6 lead. Dale County drove into Trojan territory as the
half was expiring, but Bradley Thomas intercepted a pass inside
the Warrior 5 on the final play of the half to secure the 18 point
lead.
Dale County overcame two penalties on their opening drive to
strike first in the second half. This time Banks found
Preston Stevens for a 54 yard catch and run touchdown, breaking
away from a potential tackler's grip. A two point conversion
run failed, but the Warriors had cut the lead to 24 - 12.
After Harrison led off the next Saint James drive with a 12 yard
run, the Trojans were lucky to convert a bad snap into a 7 yard
loss on the next play. Two plays later, Jackson found Clint
Houser for a nifty 56 yard catch and run touchdown where he juked
at least two defenders inside the 10 yard line. The extra
point was good giving the Trojans a three possession lead, but an
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty forced them to kick off from their
own 25.
The Warriors executed a 10 play 59 yard drive, bolstered by a
Trojan personal foul penalty. Banks called his own number
for a four yard run up the middle as his opposing quarterback had
done earlier. Banks also tossed a conversion pass to
Crossley who dubiously reached the ball over the goal line as he
was being tackled out of bounds, and the secure lead was shortened
to 11.
Twenty would be the final point total for the Warriors as the
could not cross the endline again. They tried an onside kick
which Saint James recovered, but an offside penalty negated the
play. Houser returned the regular length kickoff back to the
Trojan 45. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Beard
made a wonderful sideline catch on a Jackson pass for 35 yards,
and on the next play Harrison picked up his third touchdown from 7
yards out. Huff's extra point pushed the lead back to a
three score advantage at 38 - 20. Dale County drove inside
the Trojan 30, but Banks could not convert a fourth down and 2 on
a quarterback keeper. A three play Harrison running drive
followed. Runs of 2, 12, and 57 put the final touchdown of
the game on board and Huff's extra point led to what would be the
final score of 45 - 20.
Dale County had one last serious chance to score, driving as deep
as the Trojan 8, but an incomplete pass on fourth down turned the
ball over. Harrison and Houser picked up yardage on several
runs to move the ball into better field position, and the
substitutes for both teams finished out the contest. Saint
James advanced to 5 - 0 in the region after their sixth
consecutive win and honed in on a home playoff berth and one win
away from a region championship - possibly earned the following
Friday on 2021 Senior Night against the Ashford Yellow Jackets.
