Homecoming. Carlisle Field
Game Conditions: Cloudy, steady rain
early, very wet field Game

"STJ Trojans Got Game" was the theme for
Homecoming 2021. Kendall Hardaway was named the 2021
Homecoming Queen, and Jimmy Perry collected his 73rd win as a
Trojan Head Coach, taking over first place with more Saint James
wins than any previous coach as the Trojans took control early and
put away the previously undefeated Straughn Tigers 43 - 6.
A steady rain for 20 minutes before the game started further
soaked a field which had taken inches of rain during the week, but
thankfully there was no lightning, no delays, and no significant
rain during game play.
Straughn won the toss and elected to receive. A 14 yard pass
on third down converted a first down. They would only
convert one more the entire game, that on a long touchdown run
after the game had been decided. A punt pinned the Trojans
back to their own 18 on the opening drive. Clayton Craft
caught a 13 yard pass on the first play and then Cosner Harrison
picked up 8 and 13 yards on his first 2 of 22 carries and his
first 21 of 226 rushing yards. However, after crossing
midfield, the wet ball was knocked loose and the Tigers recovered
a fumble. The Tigers could not convert a fourth down and 3
in Trojan territory, one of their rare visits to opposing
territory.
The Trojans took over at their own 42 and embarked on a 7 play 58
yard drive for the first score of the game. Harrison's first
carry went 11 yards, and another carry later in the drive was
negated by a holding penalty. On fourth down and 12 from the
Tiger 35, K.J. Jackson found Clint Houser on a pinpoint pass
across the middle for a crucial 17 yard conversion. Harrison
scored on the next play as he just reached the endzone on an 18
yard carry for a touchdown. Jake Huff converted the extra
point and Saint James held a 7 point lead late in the opening
quarter.
Huff then booted the kickoff into the endzone - his first
touchback kickoff of the season and his first of three in the
game. Straughn was held to one net yard on their next drive,
and after a punt Harrison picked up 8 yards on the final play of
the first stanza. After a quarterback sack, Harrison picked
up 22 yards on his next two carries advancing the ball to the
Tiger 12. Jonathan Harris picked up exactly 10 yards on
first down to advance the ball to the 2, and Harrison picked up
his second touchdown on the next play. Huff's extra point
doubled the lead to 14 - 0 early in the second quarter.
The ensuing kickoff was muffed and fumbled, but the Tigers
maintained possession albeit at their own 8 yard line. After
an incomplete pass and a yard loss, the Trojans gang-rushed the
Tiger quarterback and several of them, led by A.J. Alozie, tackled
James Guilford in the endzone for a safety and a 16 - 0 Saint
James lead.
The post-safety free kickoff was returned by Ethan Beard to the
Tiger 29. Harrison rumbled for 9 yards on first down, and
then was on the receiving end of a 20 yard catch and run touchdown
pass from Jackson. The extra point gave the Trojans a 23 - 0
lead with still ample time remaining in the first half.
After another Straughn punt, Clint Houser was brought in to give
Harrison a rest. He picked up 23 yards on second down, and
on the next play a long scrambling pass completion was negated by
an ineligible man downfield. Houser and Harrison shared runs
as Saint James had a first down on the Trojan 10. Things
quickly became bleak after a falae start penalty, and a 6 yard
loss compounded by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed the
ball all the way back to the 31 yard line. However, Jackson
found Houser on a deep out pass for a 31 yard touchdown to
overcome the mistakes and, after a failed extra point, would
cruise into halftime with a 29 point lead after a 23 point second
quarter outburst.
Perhaps amazingly, the rain held off and the Homecoming procession
and crowning was flawless as Kendall Hardaway received her crown
to reign as Homecoming Queen 2021.
Houser returned the kickoff for the Trojans all the way out to the
47 yard line, and two Harrison runs later of 18 and 35 yards
against a tiring Tiger defense gave Saint James a 36 - 0 lead less
than a minute into the third quarter. The Trojan defense
forced yet another three and out, and it was time for the reserves
to grind out clock. The Trojans were forced into their only
punt of the evening, and on the third play of the drive against
defensive reserves, Aaron Ohlava on third down from his own 21
broke through the defensive line, raced into the secondary, and
outran potential tacklers as the well-represented Tiger faithful
finally had something to cheer for - a 79 yard touchdown run -
over 70% of the Tigers' entire game offensive output.
Nicholas Hakala blocked the extra point, and the Trojans
maintained a 30 point lead at 36 - 6.
The first team offense was called back in after the quick Straughn
strike, and again two unsportsmanlike conduct fouls on Saint James
negated positive yardage on the next drive. Several plays
later, the wet football reared its ugly shape again as the Tigers
recovered another Trojan fumble. Straughn again was held to
a three and out and a deep punt was dangerously but successfully
fielded at the 15 yard line. From there, Saint James
embarked on a time consuming 85 yard drive for the final score of
the game. The fourth quarter was to be shortened to 8
minutes because of the score and the weather threat.
Harrison, Houser, and Harris picked up plus yardage on the first
three plays, and then it appeared Houser had broken loose for a 63
yard touchdown scamper near the end of the third quarrter.
However, a holding penalty wiped out much of the well-earned
yardage. On the first play of the shortened fourth quarter,
an offside penalty gave Saint James a first down at their
43. From there, Paxton Wingard and Cole Anderson were the
ball carriers the remainder of the drive which ended up being 15
plays long. Anderson was rewarded with a one yard touchdown
run and Wynston Redden added the extra point for the final margin
of 43 - 6.
Straughn fumbled on their second play of the possession, their
first and only turnover of the game, and the Trojans who were in
scoring territory simply elected to run the clock out to close out
the contest and improve that all important regional record to 3 -
0.
At the halfway point of the 2021 season, with no reschedules like
the 2020 COVID plagued conquest, Saint James was rewarded with a
week off to heal and ready for four region games in a row and
perhaps a regional championship by October.
