Saint James scored six touchdowns in their first five offensive
possessions - four rushing touchdowns by Cosner Harrison, a short
touchdown pass reception by Ethan Beard, and a punt return
touchdown by Beard and took a 40 - 0 lead late in the second
period before ninth and tenth graders finished out the game which
was shortened to 6 minute second half quarters as the Trojans
cruised by the Bullock County Hornets 40 - 23.
Saint James had three three-play touchdown drives against Alabama
Christian the previous week. This week it only took them
seconds to pick up one. After a pooch kick which was not
returned, K.J. Jackson found Bradley Thomas on a 42 yard catch and
run on the first play of the game to advance the ball to the
Hornet 24. Harrison's first two runs of the game, 13 and 11
yards, earned him his first of four touchdowns. Anyone who
is familiar with the Bullock County field knows there is a field
of deep grasses and bushes just yards beyond Thornton-Foster
Stadium's eastern goalpost. For years there was a dense
forest there. In either case, that area is known for
swallowing up footballs kicked through that particular goal.
Four times in the first quarter Saint James took an intentional
five yard delay of game penalty to make retrieving successful
kicks easier. However, the first attempt failed (and would
have anyway), but the Trojans had a 6 - 0 lead just 62 seconds
into the contest.
A deep kickoff and a short return pinned the Hornets on their
first drive. They did earn one first down, but had to punt
several plays later and Saint James was again in business as the
punt rolled out of bounds at the Horent 41. This time the
Trojans took five plays to score. Passes to Clint Houser and
Jake Huff picked up 16 and 13 yards respectively, and with an
incomplete pass and two more Harrison runs, the second of 8 yards,
the score was 13 - 0. This time after the penalty Wynston
Redden converted the extra point and Saint James was up 13 - 0
halfway through the opening stanza.
On the first Horent play of the next drive, Bradley Thomas
intercepted a pass for the second straight week and had a quite
long return negated in part due to a penalty on the return.
Harrison however picked up 21 yards on first down, and five plays
later K.J. Jackson would make his only touchdown pass of the game,
a nice four yard slant across the middle to Ethan Beard, who
continued his amazing ratio of touchdowns versus catches with a
four yard touchdown grab. This time, even after the
penalty, Saint James elected to go for two and Harrison converted
an 8 yard two point run to increase the score to 21 - 0.
The Trojans were not finsihed with their first quarter scoring as
Beard received one of only two punts in the game and raced 55
yards for a touchdown in the last minute of the qurater. The
kick failed, but the Trojans were up impressively 27 - 0 with
still time remaining in the opening quarter.
Bullock County drove into Trojan territory, but were stopped on a
fourth and one on the Trojan 34. Four plays later, Harrison
scored again on what would be the second of three exactly 55 yard
touchdowns, this one a run. At the west end of the stadium
now, the concern was kicking the ball over the west well into the
parking lot where the ball was not easily recovered, and the extra
point again was missed, but the score had jumped to 33 - 0 midway
through the second period.
Beard almost duplicated his previous accomplishment of returning
another punt from a touchdown, which would have been a 52 yarder,
but he was tackled from behind at the Hornet 6. No matter,
Harrison scored on the next play and Jake Huff, kickoff
specialist, nailed the extra point to give Saint James a 40 - 0
lead with still over four minutes remaining until halftime, and
most of the starters would not see the field again.
Bullock County did manage to erase the zero against a defense of
junior varsity players aching to play their first game as their
first two contests had been cancelled due to weather related
issues. Jaymarkis Foster, who scored a pair of touchdowns
including a 60 yarder late in the half. The Hornets
had to install temporary lighting on their side of the field due
to a weather related issue which took down the southeast light
post and caused the southwest light post not to function.
Before the Hornets attempted their two point conversion, which
Foster did make, the lights went out and had to cool off (during
halftime) before they could be relighted.
The Trojans Junior Varsity offense ran several plays to run out
the halftime clock. After an abbreviated halftime (15
minutes), and the return of the lights in the southeast quadrant
of the field, the coaches agreed to six minute quarters in the
second half as the game was pretty much decided. Kaleb
Foster ended a five play scoring drive bolstered by a dubious pass
interference penalty with a 10 yard run, and Jaymarkis Foster's
conversion cut the lead to 40 - 16 over three minutes into the
shortened quarter.
Jaymarkis Foster would tally another long touchdown, the third of
the 55 yarders, on a pitch play and a conventional extra point was
kicked by the Hornets cutting the lead to 40 - 23. However,
the Trojan reserves managed to run out the clock on some tough
running by backup quarterback Conner Pruitt and runningbacks
Paxton Wingard and WIls Johnson, who also added a powerful return
on a kcikoff which almost knocked ou one of his own players.
The region win set up a potential showdown with undefeated
Straughn, reminiscent of the 2020 game where Saint James traveled
to Straughn for a rare Saturday night game rescheduled by
weather. Straughn was undefeated and celebrating homecoming,
which they did in a downpour, and were throttled by the Trojans 41
- 0. Will there be a repeat at the Trojan's homecoming of
2021? We'll see.
