October 8, 2020   Carlisle Field.  HOMECOMING  Game Conditions:  Cloudy, slightly muggy  Game Temperature:  80  Wind:  none

Saint James celebrated Homecoming 2020 by crowning Tamya Bruce during a rare Thursday night game where Cosner Harrison continued his offensive brilliance by rushing for over 200 yards, again; scoring two touchdowns, again; and generating a perfect passer rating by completing his first pass attempt for a 45 yard touchdown as Saint James withstood the whirling dervish known as Dale County quarterback Ethan Teal while clinching a playoff spot and setting their sights on trying to clinch a first round home playoff game as they defeated the visiting Warriors 52 - 26.  Run on sentence anyone?

Saint James received the opening kickoff which was returned by Zac Russell for 20 yards.  However, Saint James cuold not convert a first down and the Warriors took over on their own 42.  The running game, powered by quarterback Ethan Teal and halfback Trashon Marshall, ate big chunks of yardage out of the Trojan defense all night, especially on the first drive.  A pass interference penalty on a rare Dale County pass gave the Warriors first down at the Trojan 23.  Three plays later, on first down from the 11, a handoff seemed to be fisted way back toward the center of the field and was fallen upon by Teal 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage.  Dale County had several high and fumbled snaps on their opening drive which they were fortunate to maintain possession, However, after a penalty and an incomplete pass, Teal had the ball knocked away from him and Saint James recovered all the way out at the Trojan 47.  Cosner Harrison picked up nearly a tenth of his rushing yardage on the next play (24).  After a short run and a penalty, K.J. Jackson found a perhaps unexpected receiver Clayton Craft beating a defender down the field and making a great cradling catch just inside the goal line for the first score of the evening.  Holt Harrison's first of seven consecutive extra points put the Trojans on the scoreboard, finally, with less than two minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

A muff on the ensuing kickoff gave the Warriors poor field position and they punted four plays later.  The Trojans gave the ball right back to Dale County with a fumble right before the end of the quarter.  Marshall started the second stanza with a pair of double digit runs.  Two plays later, Teal called his own number on a zigging 24 yard touchdown.  The Tyler McSween extra point promptly tied the score at 7 early in the second quarter, but the deadlock would not last long.  Russell returned the kickoff to near midfield.
Clint Houser and Harrison provided modest runs, and on the next play Harrison headed toward the near sidelines and crusised for a 47 yard run where the defenders were simply outrun.  Holt Harrison's extra point boosted the lead back to 7, and the Trojans would never be caught from there.

A holding penalty, and a desperation scramble by Teal, the first of several, did not produce a first down, and a short punt gave the Trojans great field position at the Warrior 45.  It took Saint James only one play to capitalize.  Jackson pitched to Harrison in what looked like a similar play to the previous touchdown with a pitch thrown in, but then Harrison looked downfield and saw Russell had zoomed past his defender.  A near perfect pass landed in Russell's arms and he raced into the endzone with a 45 yard touchdown reception.  The Harrison extra point gave Saint James a 21 - 7 lead midway through the second quarter.

After the first quarter ended 7 - 0 a scoring frenzy in the second quarter (37 points worth) was not expected.  Dale County concluded their next four play drive with a 38 yard run by Marshall after eluding several missed tackles.  The extra point was blocked, and in retrospect some may have not realized at the time but the momentum halt of the blocked extra point may have been the play of the game.  However, the Warriors had cut the lead back to one possession at 21 - 13 with still plenty of first half time remaining.

A personal foul penalty at the end of a no-yardage kickoff return moved Saint James out to their own 46.  Consecutive Cosner five yard runs were followed up by an 18 yard pass to Ethan Beard, and the Trojans were on the Warrior 26.  Harrison picked up 3 on first down, and on second down Jackson tossed his second touchdown pass of the game, again to a perhaps new favorite receiver, Clayton Craft, who was wide open on a post pattern for a 23 yard touchdown to match his number 23 jersey.  The extra point gave Saint James a two touchdown plus lead with still two minutes remaining until halftime.  Dale County again could not convert a first down, and Saint James took over on their own 35 after a fair caught punt.  A nice catch over the middle for Bradley Thomas gave the Trojans their first 13 yards.  Russell made a key reception and went out of bounds for 9 yards.  On third down, Harrison picked up perhaps his mightiest run, a 23 yarder, ending out of bounds at the Warrior 20 with just seconds remaining.  Harrison was called in to attempt a 36 yard field goal which he made, and Saint James had an 18 point lead headed into halftime and the joyous Homecoming celebration which followed during halftime.

The Warriors needed a quick score to start the third quarter and they got one less than two minutes into the half.  A 16 yard Marshall run and a 9 yard Teal pass completion after a decent kickoff return gave Dale County first down at the Trojan 38.  From there, Teal again displayed his running prowess with consecutive runs of 15, 9, and 14 yards, the final one for a touchdown.  A two point conversion pass was overthrown and incomplete, but the margin had been cut to 31 - 19 with plenty of time remaining.

Another fine return by Russell gave Saint James good field position, and four more Harrison runs had the Trojans in the endzone once more - with 20 and 27 yards on the third and fourth play of the drives, and Holt Harrison was again lining up for an extra point  - which he converted, and Saint James had a double point lead of 38 - 19 over the Warriors.  A 25 yard run by Marshall and a peculiar yardage on a defensive pass interference penalty had Dale County marching into Trojan territory again.  However, a holding penalty on what would have been substantial yardage on a catch and run eventually led to a fourth down attempt at the Trojan 22.  An incomplete pass turned the ball over on downs, and methodically moved 78 yards for another touchdown.  Runs by Harrison and Clint Houser and a second nice catch by Bradley Thomas eventually led to Jackson calling his own number up the middle for a 3 yard touchdown run.  The Harrison extra point gave Saint James a 45 - 19 lead with still third quarter clock available.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Kevin Taylor made a fine interception as he niftily covered his potential receiver toward the endzone.  A long arcing return only netted one yard, but now it was time for Saint James to exhaust clock.  Or not.  Harrison picked up 13 yards on what would be his final two carries of the evening, putting him just short of a 250 yard rushing performance with, oh yes, that touchdown pass to boot.  Speaking of touchdown passes, the speedy Ethan Beard raced down the field on the next play and caught up to a Jackson pass which led to a 62 yard touchdown and the Harrison extra point gave the Trojans 52 on the evening.

Despite a penalty on the kickoff, the Warriors could start their next drive no better than their own 27.  Defensive substitutes were shuffled in regularly, and the Warriors marched down the field for what would be the final score of the game - a one yard run by Marshall.  The extra point resulted in the eventual final tally of 52 - 26.  Houser and Luke Moody were given handoffs by backup quarterback Paxton Wingard, and the second squad swallowed valuable clock time before turning the ball over on downs.  Dale County made no extra effort to score on their last possession, and Saint James left the field with another playoff berth in hand and their longest regular season road trip of the year, to familiar foe Ashford, coming up in eight days.
