September 11,
2020 Carlisle Field SENIOR
NIGHT Game Conditions: Drizzly, muggy
Game Temperature: 84 Winds: Variable,
mostly SE 5 mph
Cosner Harrison became the sixth Trojan all time to score five
touchdowns in one game as he rushed for 249 yards on 30 carries,
and despite a lengthy lightning delay at halftime, as Saint James
picked up their first home win and first region win of the season
on an early Senior Night with a 38 - 14 defeat of the visiting
Bullock County Hornets.
The pre-game warmups were delayed by approximately 40 minutes,
which led to a shortened warm up period. It also gave time
for Saint James to present its fall sports and band seniors, offer
a deserving tribute to former Trojan Nolan Fields who passed away
in 2016 during his season to Hodgkins lymphoma, and to remember
the fateful day exactly 19 years only we all know now as simply
9/11.
Kickoff was appoximately 9 minutes late. Saint James took
the opening kickoff and drove down the field after a nifty kick
off return gave the Trojans great field position at their own 45
yard line. Clint Houser and Harrison each picked up first
downs as the Trojans moved deep into Hornet territory.
However, several plays later, K.J. Jackson fired a pass toward the
endzone but it was intercepted by Hornet do-it-all Bryant Grant,
who also kicked and ran the ball five times. His short
return to the 6 yard line prevented an early Saint James
score. Four plays later, it was Grant back to punt who took
the snap and, planned or not, ran toward his sidelines and picked
up 17 yards on a risky fourth down call for a brave first
down. A block in the back penalty on the next play cancelled
out another 17 yard run, and eventually Grant did punt. Zac
Russell fielded the punt and survived a heavy hit to give Saint
James good field position yet again.
This time they would capitalize. Harrison would run the ball
seven times on the next drive, every play except for an incomplete
pass which was negated by an ineligible receiver penalty.
His third down 13 yard run gave Saint James a first down at the
Bullock County 20, and on the next play Harrison would find a hole
and scamper 20 yards for the first of his five touchdowns.
Holt Harrison went on to convert the first of his five extra
points to continue his perfect kicking season, and the Trojans had
a touchdown lead late in the first quarter.
By now, cloud to cloud lightning was observed, and many thought a
delay might be called at any time. The decision was made to
play on, and the first half was eventually completed.
Bullock County got a huge kickoff return by Jaymarkis Foster to
bring the ball into Trojan territory at the 43 yard line.
However, the Hornets came up short by one yard on fourth down and
five, one of six fourth down conversions attempted (three were
made), and Saint James took over at their own 34. A penalty,
one of ten called against Saint James, stalled the drive, but the
Hornets could not convert a first down and on fourth down Grant
muffed the punt snap. He tried feverishly to gain the first
down on his own, but failed, and the Trojans again had excellent
field position at the Hornet 35. Jackson picked up 4 yards
on a nifty run which could have been considerably longer if not
for a desperation tackle, and two plays later he connected with
Cooper Wright on a 12 yard first down completion, one of three
excellent catches Wright had on the night. Will Wales, a
surprise carrier on the next play, scooted 20 yards and was
knocked out of bounds just short of the goal line. Harrison
picked up the final yard on the drive for his second touchdown,
and Holt Harrison's extra point double the Saint James lead to 14
with just over 5 minutes remaining until halftime and the
lightning increasing in quantity.
Bullock County benefited from a defensive pass interference
penalty on the next drive, but could not reach midfield. A
punt gave Saint James first down at their own 32. Wright
caught his other two passes on the drive, the second a 12 yarder
on third down and 13. Harrison picked up the first down on
the next play, but a penalty and several incomplete passes led to
an 11 yard reception by Jeffrey Ford to give the Trojans fourth
and four at the 23 yard line. Holt Harrison was called in to
attempt a 40 yard field goal, which he drilled, and Saint James
took a three score advantage, 17 - 0, into halftime.
The weather held off long enough for the Saint James band to
perform a moving tribute to America in line with 9/11, and get
their recognition they had not yet received from the several times
postponed "Meet The Trojans". As soon as the band departed
the field and the Trojanettes performed their routine, the
lightning was just too close and the radar was threatening so a
lightning delay was issued at that time - it eventually lasted 46
minutes before the teams were permitted to return to the field for
another abbreviated warmup time. The predicted heavy rain
and lightning never really materialized enough to threaten
spectators, but most of them on both sides decided to call it a
night anyways as they scurried toward their car shelters.
The Hornets seemed to have all the momentum to start the third
quarter as Grant returned the kickoff to just short of
midfield. Quarterback Robert Williams promptly picked up 11
yards on first down, and two plays later lofted a 36 yard catch
and run to Brandon Perry to advance the ball to the Trojan
8. A sack on first down put pressure on the Hornets, but a
defensive holding penalty on fourth down (which likely saved a
sure touchdown) gave the Hornets a second chance which they cashed
in. Jeymarkis Foster took a handoff around left end and
found the endzone for the first Hornet score. A two point
pass attempt was nearly intercepted, leading to a non-convert, but
Bullock County had cut the lead to 17 - 6 early in the third
quarter.
It did not long for Saint James to respond. Cooper Wright,
of second quarter reception fame, ran a short kickoff back to the
33 yard line. Cosner Harrison picked up 2 yards on first
down, and then on second down broke through the line, got into the
Hornet secondary, and outraced pursuers for a 65 yard touchdown
run, his longest of the year. The extra point gave the
Trojans their three possession lead back at 24 - 6 with still
ample time remaining in the third quarter. Bullock County
nearly found themselves in scoring position as Foster returned the
kickoff 70 yards to the Trojan 12, but a holding penalty back at
the Hornet 35, which set up the long return, negated a majority of
the yardage. Foster did pick up 26 yards on a run on first
down, but a loss and a sack on the next two plays forced a punt
and a fair catch by Zac Russell at his own 33.
Saint James promptly drove 67 yards for another touchdown.
Harrison and Wales shared the running load; Wales' first half run
which nearly earned him a touchdown was virtually duplicated as
again he was knocked out at the 1. Harrison picked up
touchdown number four on the next play, and the extra point gave
Saint James a 31 - 6 lead - the same score as the third quarter
ended in the Reeltown matchup two weeks earlier. Before the
third quarter ended, the Hornets would commit their only turnover
of the night as the ball was knocked out of Foster's hands and
recovered by Granger Hicks at the Bullock County 33.
Harrison picked up 25 on a carry down to the Hornet 8 on the last
play of the quarter, and two plays later he racked up his fifth
touchdown of the night, and his 30th point of the night (both
tying Trojan all-time records), to seal the deal as Saint James
had a 38 - 6 lead.
With an intermittent running clock the remainder of the game, the
teams traded possessions. The Hornets scored in the last few
seconds of the game against mostly Trojan defensive
reserves. A defensive pass interference penalty and a
roughing the passer penalty gave Bullock County 30 free yards on
their last drive. Grant's 17 yard run set up an 8 yard
touchdown by Perry with less than 14 seconds remaining, and a two
point conversion run led to the final score of 31 - 14 as Saint
James got off to a belated, but victorious start in 4A region 3
with a visit to Straughn (for the second consecutive year)
approaching in what would be Saint James' 500th varsity football
game.
