Tiger Stadium. Game Conditions: Clear,
delightful, minimal humidity Game
Temperature: 81 Wind: Negligible
Alex Whisenhunt had a career night for the Trojans. He
caught three passes (all three game completions) for a total of
116 yards, and all three were touchdowns. He carried the
ball 8 times for 80 yards, including a 46 yarder which almost
became a touchdown, and he returned two kickoffs for a total of 99
yards (one an 81 yard touchdown), not to mention making at least
four tackles. That coupled with Austin Gavin's 206 yards of
rushing and a staunch defense gave Saint James a four game sweep
in its early season road trip as the Trojans manhandled the
Dadeville Tigers by a 46 - 18 margin.
Saint James moved the ball steadily down the field on their first
possession, primarily on the legs of Gavin. However, as was
the case three times the previous week, the Trojans coughed up a
fumble at the Tiger 4 yard line and the Dadeville defense had
held. For the entire first half, with the exception of one
play (later), the Tigers could generate no offense in the first
half. A punt went out of bounds at the Tiger 38, but the
Trojans could not take advantage of the great field position and
returned a punt which traveled into the Dadeville end zone.
However, on the first play from the 20, a Dadeville pass was
deflected upwards, and for the second week in a row it was hauled
in by Bennett Blankenship to give Saint James even better field
position at the Tiger 21. This time they would respond and
convert for a score. An Andrew Sadie run again pushed the
ball inside the Tiger 10, but a holding penalty gave the Trojans
first and goal at the Tiger 19. Two plays later, Fett tossed
a pass over the middle to Whisenhunt who wrestled the ball into
his control and he scampered for a 19 yard touchdown, the first
score of the night. The extra point attempt hit the upright,
but a running into the kicker penalty gave Jan Wachowitz a second
chance, which he converted, and Saint James was up 7 - 0 with just
over three minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
A delay of game penalty and a sack stifled the next Dadeville
drive, and after a punt gave Saint James field position in Tiger
territory again, Gavin rushed for 10 yards on the final play of
the first quarter to advance the ball to the Tiger 32. On
third down from the 33, Fett once again found Whisenhunt wide open
down the middle for a catch and run 33 yard touchdown. The
extra point doubled the lead to 14 - 0 early in the second
quarter.
The Tigers finally converted a first down on their next drive, but
were again forced to punt. This time the ball went out of
bounds at the Trojan 30 requiring Saint James to travel 70 yards
for a score. They did so, and promptly. Gavin ran for
6 yards on first down and the remaining 64 on second down as he
found a hole up the middle and raced away from pursuing
Tigers. Wachowitz converted to make the score 21 - 0 midway
through the quarter.
After another Dadeville three and out and a punt which forced
Saint James back to their own 20, Whisenhunt carried for 4 on
first down, Gavin for 3 on the next play, and then Whisenhunt was
called on again with virtually the same play, a deep pass over the
middle which Fett tossed expertly and 65 yards later Whisenhunt
had his third touchdown reception of the game, a feat no other
Trojan had accomplished since Jake Jabour did so in a 2011 matchup
against Headland. The third touchdown pass by Fett, on what
would be his only three completions of the evening, was also the
first such feat since Connor Collier threw three touchdown passes
against Ashford in 2014. Wachowitz's extra point was
deflected, but the Trojan lead was 27 with still half of the
second quarter remaining.
As mentioned earlier, Dadeville got 77 of their net 85 first half
yards on one play. Jordan Rambo lifted a pass down the
field. Two Trojan defenders collided and took each other out
of the play, and Javuntae Holley benefited by catching the pass
and running away for a 71 yard Tiger touchdown. The extra
point was blocked, but Dadeville was finally on the scoreboard at
27 - 6. However, it took Saint James only 18 seconds to
respond. Whisenhunt fielded the ensuing kickoff at his own
19 yard line, broke through the first line of defense at the 30,
and raced down the friendly near sidelines for an 81 yard kickoff
return - his fourth touchdown in less than a quarter's worth of
game time. The extra point sailed just wide left, but the
Trojans had regained their 27 point lead.
Holley converted one running first down for the Tigers before
another punt. Saint James could not convert a fourth down at
the Tiger 41 with 12 seconds to go in the half, and it appeared 33
- 6 would be the score going into halftime. Not so
fast. Avontae Wilson from the wild-Tiger formation tried to
work some magic on the final play of the half but it
backfired. The ball was wrestled loose in a gang tackle and
Michael Shalayda picked up the pigskin and raced 40 yards for a
touchdown as the halftime clock expired. This was the first
time in Saint James history a Trojan team had scored five
touchdowns in a single quarter. The extra point boinked off
the right goalpost, perhaps in an overcompensation from the
previous miss, but after a slow start and a 7 - 0 first quarter,
the Trojans piled on 32 to take a 39 - 6 halftime lead.
After forcing a punt on the opening Dadeville third quarter drive,
Whisenhunt took a handoff on first down and broke through the line
once more, appearing to be on his way to his fifth touchdown of
the night. However, he was tackled at the Tiger 10 after a
46 yard jaunt. Two consecutive runs by Gavin of 6 and 4
yards and a Wachowitz extra point gave Saint James what would be
their final score of the evening, and the biggest lead, at 46 - 6,
and the reserves were shuffled in continuously afterwards.
A 61 yard Dadeville punt pinned Saint James at the 5, but the
Trojans used up over 6 minutes of third quarter clock to travel
only as far as their own 32 before punting. On the first two
plays of the fourth quarter, Dadeville's Christian Nelson ran for
19 yards, and then again for 49 yards as he broke away for the
Tigers' second touchdown. A two point conversion run was
stuffed, and the lead was 46 - 12 as a semi-running clock was
enforced for the remainder of the game. A Trojan punt and a
Dadeville fumble game Saint James first down at the Tiger 25, but
they could not convert on a fourth down. Dadeville used up
most of the remaining running clock on the ground, as neither team
attempted a pass in the second half. Issiah Tolbert and
Avontae Wilson shared the Tiger rushing load, with Wilson rushing
for the final 8 yards and the final score of the evening as he was
stopped on his own two point conversion run.
Saint James ran out the clock and finished the first half of the
regular season with a 5 - 0 start, the previous four games all on
the road, earning a well-deserved off week before what would
likely be the game of the season against county foe Pike Road,
likely for the regional title, two weeks later back in the
friendly and historic confines of Carlisle Field.
