August 23, 2019  Carlisle Field  7:00 PM   Weather:  Heavy rain before game; showers during game   Game Temperature:  82   Wind:  Variable, heavy during storms

Saint James took advantage of a blocked punt to score a touchdown for a 10 point halftime lead; endured a 20 minute halftime, a 53 minute lightning delay, and a quick score afterwards before Andrew Sadie scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving, as the Trojans defeated the Bayside Academy Admirals 24 - 7 in the 2019 season opener at Carlisle Field.

A heavy rain which lasted over an hour before the game delayed the beginning of warmups, but unlike several other games in town the same evening the contest began on time.  Each time moved the ball into the other's territory on the respective opening drives, but Saint James was denied on a fourth down at the Admiral 34 and Bayside lost the ball on a fourth down fumble at the Trojan 29.  Each team went three and out on their second drives.  Saint James took over at midfield after a short punt and began moving the ball at the end of the first quarter.  Alex Whisenhunt picked up 10 on first down and Andrew Sadie followed up with an 11 yard carry on the next play.  On the first play of the second quarter, Drew Fett completed a pass to Sadie for 22 yards down to the Admiral 10.  Three runs netted six yards, and on fourth down Jan Wachowitz was called on to convert a 20 yard field goal, which he did, giving Saint James its first lead of the season at 3 - 0.

Bayside picked up one first down, but a holding penalty stalled their drive.  On fourth down, Whisenhunt rushed in and blocked the Admiral punt.  Punter Joseph Smith recovered the ball back at his own 26 yard line, but the Trojans had momentum and quickly capitalized.  A pair of runs by Austin Gavin moved the ball down to the 7 yard line, and on the next play Brock Woodham raced around left end for the first touchdown of the season.  Wachowitz's extra point boosted the Saint James lead to 10 with 4:27 remaining in the first half.

At this time, lightning which had been somewhat distant began to close in on Carlisle Field, but the officials remained determined to get the first half completed without delay.  Bayside could not generate a first down on their drive, and only managed five the entire evening.  Saint James got the ball back before halftime but only progressed barely into Admiral territory before the halftime horn signaled.  The field, now soggy and chewed up, did not allow bands to perform.  And, as the 20 minute halftime period ended, the decision was made to delay the second half because of the nearby lightning.  23 minutes into the first 30 minute mandatory clock lightning forced a reset.  After the 20 minutes of halftime and a 53 minute lightning delay, teams were finally permitted to return to the field and warm up for the required 3 minutes before the third quarter finally began.

The Admirals appeared much more ready to play after the break.  After Jacob Cunningham returned the second half kickoff to the 42 yard line, he went to work immediately.  On a play very similar to the Admirals' first play of the opening half, a 32 yard run, Cunningham called his own number around left end for a quick 36 yard gain.  Those two plays accounted for more than half of the Admirals' yardage for the entire evening.  A penalty slowed the drive, but on fourth and 5 from the Trojan 17, Cunningham found receiver John Warner in the endzone after he had slipped past Trojan defenders and slipped himself.  The catch was made and Bayside had its first score of the season and its determined crowd cheering loudly for the first time all evening.  The extra point quickly cut the lead to 10 - 7 and quickly concerned Saint James fans as well.

An out of bounds kickoff gave Saint James decent field position.  After a six yard run by Gavin on first down, two long Gavin runs on the next two plays were each called back by downfield penalties.  The second penalty was far enough downfield where the Trojans still earned a first down at the Admiral 45.  However, on fourth and four Gavin was held one yard short of his first down and Bayside took over with momentum.  A personal foul penalty on a deep sack prolonged the Admiral drive, but the Saint James defense held Bayside to less than a yard on two consecutive plays forcing yet another turnover on downs - this one giving the Trojans first down at the Bayside 46.  Four plays later, on the opening play of the fourth quarter, a costly offside penalty gave the Trojans a first down at the 31.  Three straight Gavin runs surrounding a penalty advanced the ball to the 18.  Brock Woodham powered for 6 on first down, and then Andrew Sadie, on only his second carry of the game, used great blocking to zoom off of left end for a Trojan touchdown.  Wachowitz's extra point gave the Trojans their 10 point lead back with 9½ minutes remaining in the game and the rain starting up yet again, this time with minimal lightning at best.

A squib kickoff with no return gave Bayside another chance to cut the lead, but on third down Cunningham while scrambling lost hold of the wet football and the bouncing pigskin was fallen upon by Andrew Sadie, giving Saint James the ball at the Admiral 29.  The Trojans would use up almost four minutes of valuable clock time to lock up the victory.  Wachowitz was called in to attempt a 42 yard field goal and fourth and 7.  He missed wide, but a running into the kicker penalty kept the drive going, and at that point Saint James opted to try and convert on fourth down.  Gavin's 5 yard diving run was more than enough yardage, and Saint James had a first down at the Admiral 16.  Several negative plays later, Fett scrambled to find a wide open Sadie behind the defense in the endzone for a 25 yard touchdown.  Wachowitz's third consecutive extra point gave Saint James a 24 - 7 lead, which would be the final margin of victory, with just under 5 minutes remaining in the game.

A personal foul penalty after the end of another squib kickoff gave Bayside possession in Saint James territory, but an incomplete pass on fourth down turned the ball back over to the Trojans.  The second string was called in on the final Saint James drive of the game, led by quarterback Cosner Harrison.  All but the last 27 seconds were shaved off the clock in the possession, and despite a short punt, Bayside opted to run only one more play with its backup players before the final horn sounded, approximately an hour later than most expected, and the Trojans celebrated their tenth consecutive regular season victory.  Noteworthy in the season opening win - head coach Jimmy Perry picked up his 50th win at Saint James and the Trojan football program picked up its 250th win all time, and for the first season since 2016 Saint James celebrated a season opener.

Carlisle Field will/would not host a varsity game for another six weeks, as Saint James ventures on a four game road trip followed by an off week to continue the 2019 season.
