November 2, 2018.  Ragsdale-Boykin Field   Game Conditions:  Clear, cool   Game Temperature:  54   Wind:  Negligible after pre-game warmup

Saint James overcame some unfamiliar sloppy play and turnovers by rushing for more than 400 yards up and down Ragsdale-Boykin Field.  Tony Amerson broke the school single season rushing record, and Gavin Austin added a career night with two long touchdown runs as the Trojans finished their fourth ever 9 - 1 regular season, none better, by defeating the Trinity Wildcats 31 - 21 in the 2018 regular season finale.

The Trojans got huge early momentum as a short kickoff was fielded by Alex Whisenhunt and he raced 44 yards down the far sidelines to the Trinity 32 to open up the game.  Seven plays later, on fourth down and 2 from the Wildcat 13, Tony Amerson picked up the first of his two touchdowns on a 13 yard burst to the near sidelines, just crossing the goal line before being brought down by a too late Trinity tackle.  Jan Wachowitz's extra point gave the Trojans a 7 - 0 lead less than 3 minutes into the game of what would be a first quarter offensive outburst for both teams.

Despite a good Wildcat kickoff return, a holding penalty negated a large run and forced the first of six Trinity punts.  The punt was muffed but fallen upon by Brock Woodham at his own 27 yard line.  On the next play, Austin Gavin took his first handoff of the night on a misdirection play back toward the Trojan sidelines.  A large hole was opened by the offensive line and Gavin may not have ever been touched as he quickly raced into the secondary and would not let Trinity pursuers catch him on his way to a 73 yard touchdown run, his career long.  Wachowitz's extra point doubled the lead to 14 - 0 with still half of the first quarter remaining.

Trinity began making some headway on the ground with Josh Hynniman on the next drive.  On third down from the Trojan 47, quarterback Rob Chandler found his receiver Jack Singletary behind the Trojan defenders on the far sidelines and he raced 47 yards with the catch and run for the first Wildcat touchdown.  Preston Berry converted his extra point, and suddenly the Saint James lead was chopped in half at 14 - 7.

It did not take long for the Trojans to score a touchdown on their third consecutive drive.  Stephen Sadie fielded a short kickoff on the ground at the Trojan 47.  Two Amerson runs and a Collin Duncan quarterback scramble picked up 15 yards, and then Amerson broke loose for his second touchdown of the quarter, a 38 yarder.  Wachowitz's believed school-record consecutive extra point streak ended on a wide kick, but Saint James now led 20 - 7 with still over 90 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

There would be yet another touchdown in the first quarter, this one back on the Trinity side.  Tate Holley returned the kickoff to the Trinity 37.  Two plays later Jake Hufham was on the receiving end of a 28 yard pass from Chandler.  Two plays later, Holley took a handoff and was knocked out of bounds just short of the goal line.  With under three seconds remaining in the opening quarter, Hynniman took the ball over from the one yard line for the fifth combined first quarter touchdown.  Berry's extra point cut the Saint James lead to 20 - 14 as a frenetic first quarter finished.

As dynamic as the first quarter was offensively, the second quarter was as non-dynamic.  The teams traded punts on drives using up the early half of the second quarter.  The Trojans lost a fumble near midfield, but Trinity was unable to pierce the Trojan 40 and pinned Saint James deep with another punt.  Saint James started at their own 4 yard line with just under 5 minutes until halftime.  Eight consecutive running plays gained a combined 36 yards, and the Trojans were out of the endzone shadows.  A defensive pass interference penalty moved the ball into Trinity territory.  After an incomplete pass, Duncan would complete his only pass of the night - which would be his last pass of the night - for 30 yards downfield to Brock Woodham.  However, the clock expired on the play as the Trojans reached the Wildcat 15 yard line, and a 34 point first quarter was silenced with a no score second quarter leading into halftime.

The defenses continued to rule for the first three drives of the third quarter as each ended in punts.  Saint James was pinned deep again after a punt at their own 16 yard line.  No problem.  The same play was called on which Gavin had scored from 73 yards earlier and this time the hole for Gavin was bigger and he was definitely untouched as he raced 84 yards for a Trojan touchdown - tied for the longest scrimmage touchdown ever against Trinity (with a 2012 84 yard run by Frank Moody).  As the Wildcats were trying to regain composure after chasing Gavin all the way down the field, Amerson raced in for a two point conversion boosting the Trojan lead back to 14, at 28 - 14, midway through the third quarter.

The Wildcats failed to convert a first down, and the Trojans took valuable time off the clock headed into the fourth quarter.  The Trojans advanced as far as the Trinity 12 before two untimely false start penalties pushed the ball back to the 22.  Amerson picked up 11 on the third down attempt, and Wachowitz was called in to attempt a field goal from 28 yards - which he converted - the first Saint James field goal since the first game of the season, and the Trojans appeared to be up comfortably at 31 - 14 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Hynniman picked up 20 yards on the only Trinity double digit yardage carry of the evening, but two plays later Chandler was intercepted by Will Wales on the far sideline and his return brought the ball back into Trojan territory.  However, three plays later, Saint James returned the favor as another fumble was lost and picked up by James Davis who returned the fumble to the Trojan 21 yard line.  A dubious defensive pass interference penalty was called on the next play in the endzone, but the penalty was marked the entire 15 yards down to the Trojan 6 instead of what should have been a half the distance mark off in high school.  After the confusion settled, Chandler tossed his second touchdown pass on the next play, a nice diving catch by Jack Collett.  The extra point cut the Trojan lead to 10, but there were only 91 second remaining.

Trinity used up all three of its allotted timeouts on the next drive after failing to recover a short kickoff, and a fourth down and 1 quarterback sweep came up just two inches short, giving the Wildcats another chance to score with still over a minute remaining.  Four consecutive pass completions moved the ball down to the Trojan 28, but time was vanishing rapidly.  Brock Woodham intercepted a pass at the 12 yard line to seal the victory.  A confusing group of unsportsmanlike conduct and personal foul penalties were called on both teams afterward, and after much discussion the ball was arbitrarily placed at the spot of the interception.  No matter, one kneel down in the victory formation was enough to give Saint James its tenth victory over Trinity all time, and its third consecutive such win as both teams now set their sites on the 2018 playoffs to begin exactly one week later.
