Saint James concluded two early scoring drives with well-kicked
field goals by Jan Wackowitz, but the persistent Admiral offense
eventually wore down the Trojans as Bayside Academy opened their
2018 season with a home victory over the Trojans by a 26 - 6
margin, ending the career Saint James unbeaten streak in Baldwin
County.
The Trojans virtually dominated the first 15 minutes of the game,
converting two of three drives into scores. Tony Amerson's
49 yard run on the opening drive gave Saint James a first down at
the Admiral 18, but no further progress could be made, and
Wachowitz was called in to attempt his first career field goal,
which he converted from 37 yards out giving Saint James a 3 - 0
lead less than 4 minutes into the game.
Bayside converted one first down on their initial drive, but was
forced to punt before reaching midfield. A 27 yard run by
Colin Duncan was negated by an illegal formation penalty, and the
succeeding Trojan drive was thus thwarted. Admiral Jake
Cunningham ran for 19 of his game high 131 yards to move the ball
into Trojan territory, but on the next play Colin Duncan
intercepted a Matthew Kalifch pass and returned it 36 yards to the
Admiral 40. Amerson converted one first down rushing, and a
penalty was overcome by a 12 yard first down pass completion from
Duncan to Michael Shalayda on the first play of the second
quarter. A holding penalty on the next play pushed Saint
James back and stalled the drive, but Wachowitz was called in once
more and converted a line drive field goal from 41 yards out to
give Saint James a 6 - 0 lead early in the second period.
The Admirals would increasingly control the final 45 minutes of
the game, however. After a kickoff penalty and a rekick,
Bayside took over at their own 33 and would convert four first
downs as they marched down the field. However, the Saint
James defense stopped the Admirals on a fourth down and 5 from the
Trojan 8 and took over on downs. Two short gains, and a dead
ball personal foul penalty gave the Trojans third down from their
own four yard line. Trouble in the backfield on a snap
resulted in a fumble and defensive lineman Tucker Milteer fell on
the wayward pigskin in the endzone for a sudden Admiral
score. Ben Kendall's extra point gave Bayside a lead they
would not relinquish at 7 - 6 late in the first half.
Saint James could not convert a first down on their next drive and
a punt gave the Admirals one more chance to score from
midfield. A 21 yard run by Cunningham gave Bayside a first
down at the Trojan 24 with under 4 seconds remaining, but after a
timeout a 40 yard field goal try was short and wide right and the
Admiral lead remained at one going into halftime.
Wachowitz continued to display his kicking prowess as he boomed a
65 yard kickoff (after a penalty) into the endzone to start the
third quarter. Austin White picked up 12 yards on first
down, and Cunningham was on his way to another sizable run on the
ensuing play but the ball was wrestled away by Trojan tacklers and
a fumble was recovered at the 47, giving Saint James an
opportunity to retake the lead. Bennett Blankenship caught a
10 yard pass for a lone first down, but another punt was
needed. A good punt pushed the Admirals back to their own 10
yard line. From there they embarked on a grueling 90 yard
drive which took up over 8 minutes of game clock. Six
different runners carried the ball on an all-rush 15 play drive
which culminated in a 5 yard touchdown run by Nathan Cook, his
first of two scores. The extra point was blocked, so the
Trojans were still within a touchdown at 13 - 6 late in the third
quarter.
The Trojans were unable to convert a first down on their next
drive as the fourth quarter started. In fact, Saint James
converted only one first down in each of the final three
quarters. However, an Admirals holding penalty and a
quarterback sack by Bradley Woodham stopped Bayside from
progressing on their next drive. After a punt, Saint James
had decent field position at their own 47, but again could not
produce points. A punt gave the Admirals possession on their
own 30. After a penalty and a incomplete pass, Mac Douglas
virtually sealed the game as he broke through a closed-in Trojan
defense and outran defenders for a 75 yard touchdown midway
through the fourth quarter. Kendall's kick gave Bayside a
two score cushion at 20 - 6.
After yet another endzone kickoff, this one by Douglas who had
just scored the previous touchdown, a Duncan pass was deflected by
an oncoming rusher and intercepted by lineman Killian Kahally at
the Trojan 22. Three consecutive Cunningham runs advanced
the ball to the four, where Cook carried in on the next play for
his second touchdown of the game. The extra point boinked
off the upright, but the Admirals were firmly in control at 26 - 6
with just under five minutes remaining. The Trojans picked
up their lone fourth quarter first down on the next drive, but
could not convert a later fourth down attempt from their own
37. Bayside graciously downed the ball three consecutive
plays to allow the clock to run out as they sealed their second
consecutive season-opening victory against Saint James.
The Trojans prepared for their long return up I-65 to begin
preparation for the first of four consecutive home games against
an old region foe, the Straughn Tigers in the 2018 Carlisle Field
opener.
