Saint James took advantage of seven turnovers
by visiting West Blocton, converting two of them directly into
scores, and stopped the Tigers on downs several more times as the
Trojans advanced to round two of the 4A playoffs for the second
conseuctive season with an impressive 62 - 13 home victory.
West Blocton received the opening kickoff and ran their workhorse
running back Trey Underwood four staright times for a total of 17
yards. However, their first deviation proved to be a
disaster as a pass was attempted to a slot receiver. It was
perfectly read by Shaw Woodson who jumped the route and
intercepted the pass in stride, racing 42 yards for a touchdown
and the first quick score of the game. The extra point was
wide, but Saint James was quickly up 6 - 0.
The turnover bug was a recurring theme for the Tigers, as on the
first play of the next drive a fumbled snap was recovered by Saint
James and they were once again immediately in scoring
territory. However, a holding penalty, yet another recurring
theme for Saint James, erased a potential Tony Amerson touchdown
and eventually stalled the drive. A 38 yard field goal
attempt failed perhaps because of a bad snap to the holder.
It was a wasted opportunity, and the Tigers took advantage.
From their own 20, it took only four plays for West Blocton to
score and take the lead. A 44 yard pass from Christian
Wright to Rodney Crymes ate up most of the yardage, and on the
next play Wright called his own number on a keeper and darted 18
yards toward the far sidelines for a touchdown. Justin
Tillery added the extra point, and West Blocton had a perhaps
surprising 7 - 6 lead midway through the first quarter despite
committing two turnovers.
The Saint James offense failed to gain a first down, and a shanked
punt gave the Tigers good field position once more. However,
on fourth down and 5 from their own 45, West Blocton attempted a
fake punt. Quarterback Wright, also the punter, faced a
heavy rush and his pass attempt was tipped and gathered in by
Stephen Sadie, who took the interception with a convoy of Trojans
into the endzone for a 36 yard touchdown scamper. Amerson
made a two point conversion to offset the earlier failed kick, and
the Trojans were back in the lead, one they would never
relinquish, at 14 - 6 late in the first quarter.
Great kickoff coverage pinned the Tigers on their next drive which
led to a very risky fourth down and 2 at their own 21 yard
line. Wright was stuffed in the backfield and suddenly the
Trojans had marvelous field position at the West Blocton 19.
Amerson picked up 13 yards on the final play of the first quarter,
which was the Trojans' initial first down of the game, and on the
next play finished a quick drive with a 6 yard dart through the
middle for a touchdown. This time, Jin Kim's extra point was
good, and the Trojan lead was up to 21 - 6.
The next drives by each team were stifled by holding penalties,
but the Trojan defense was solely responsible for the stop on the
next Tiger drive. A short punt was downed by West Blocton at
the Tiger 43 with less than 5½ minutes remaining until half
time. Saint James would score 22 points in the remaining
second quarter time. After a 5 yard penalty, Amerson took
the handoff and found a hole on the left side where he scooted
into the secondary and raced for a 48 yard touchdown. Kim's
extra point boosted the lead to 28 - 7. The Saint James
defense held again, and T.R. Robertson returned a punt to the West
Blocton 44. Several plays later, Sadie took his only handoff
of the evening and made the best of it, locating a hole and
scampering into the Tiger secondary where he outraced pursuers for
a 35 yard touchdown. The extra point gave Saint James a 35 -
7 lead with still 82 seconds remaining until halftime.
The Trojans kick coverage shone again as the Tigers were stopped
at the 8 yard line after a short kickoff return. Wright was
sacked for a 5 yard loss on first down, and on the next play a
deep pass was intercepted by Collin Duncan. However, on that
play, the Tigers were called for holding in the endzone which
Saint James opted to take, resulting in a safety, giving Saint
James a 30 point lead with 25 seconds remaining. But the
scoring was not over. Robertson returned the Tigers' free
kickoff to the West Blocton 41 yard line. On first down,
Josh Garnett connected on a pass over the middle to tight end Cade
Crow who rumbled down the field to the Tiger 4. and a quick time
out with just over 5 seconds remaining gave Saint James a chance
to score once more. Amerson's number was called, and he
delivered with a 4 yard touchdown similar to his earlier dart
through a hole with half a second remaining on the clock.
The extra point was wide, but the Trojan scoring flurry just
before halftime resulted in a 43 - 7 lead as both teams headed for
the locker rooms to regroup.
West Blocton started the second half with an onside kick attempt,
and were almost successful as the kick was muffed, but it was
fallen upon by the Trojans. Two plays later, Josh Garnett
completed his second of two passes - this one to a wide open Cade
Crow across the middle of the field down to the Tiger 17.
After a short gain by Collin Duncan, Amerson carried three
consecutive times to advance the ball just short of the goal
line. Quarterback Josh Garnett called his own number from
the one yard line for the opening second half score. Kim's
extra point allowed the Trojans to reach the 50 point plateau for
the first time ever in a playoff game.
The teams traded punts on their ensuing drives, and it appeared
Saint James had a major field position advantage as West Blocton
was pinned via punt at their own 6 yard line. After a first
down run by Underwood, a holding penalty well behind the line of
scrimmage moved the ball back to the Tiger 7. On the
following play, Wright launched a long pass which was caught by
Rodney Crymes, and he advanced all the way down to the Trojan 10
yard line for an 83 yard catch and run. The Tigers took
advantage of the long play and the resulting defensive confusion
and disarray as Keontae Taylor raced in from 10 yards for a Tiger
touchdown. A bad snap led to an impromptu incomplete two
point conversion pass, but the Trojans were still comfortably
ahead 50 - 13.
Two plays later, Amerson picked up 38 yards on his final carry of
the evening, still in the third quarter. Then it was time
for the second and even third stringers on both sides of the
ball. The Trojans were stopped on downs on the first play of
the fourth quarter, but on the Tigers' third down play, the ball
was knocked loose from the West Blocton ball carrier directly into
the arms of Andrew Sadie, who returned the ball to the Tiger
21. Cole Armagost then carried three consecutive times, the
third resulting in his first career Trojan varsity touchdown on a
5 yard run. Holt Harrison attempted the extra point, but his
low line drive went wide. Nevertheless, Saint James now
enjoyed a 56 - 13 lead.
On the next drive, Will Lee intercepted a pass from Tiger backup
quarterback Kolson Johnson and returned it to the Tiger 45.
For amazingly the fourth time in eleven games (actually in the
last seven game span), a running clock was employed.
Armagost carried for 2 yards on first down, and then Will Wales
ran a jet sweep to the wide side and accelerated down the far
sidelines for a 43 yard touchdown, his first Trojan varsity
touchdown. Once again the Harrison extra point failed, but
by now the cheering crowd had long even drowned out the musical
interludes of DJ Ziggy as Saint James wrapped up the scoring at 62
- 13.
West Blocton committed its sixth turnover on the following drive
as Tyson Eley recovered a Tiger fumble. Even with six
minutes plus remaining in time, two Armagost carries were followed
by four kneeldowns by backup quarterback Drew Fett. The
seventh turnover followed two plays later as Jack Green recovered
yet another Tiger muff. Even though his recovery occurred
with more than a minute still on the clock - each team delayed
long enough to not require another snap, and the Trojans would
turn their attention to the following week - a matchup against the
# 1 4A rated Andalusia Bulldogs at their house one week in the
future.
