Saint James overcame a mightily impressive 9 minute first half
touchdown drive by Alabama Christian by responding with four quick
strikes on 3, 1, 0, and 2 play drives for touchdowns and carried
the momentum on in the second half as the Trojans ended the
Eagles' 7 game winning streak, and 7 - 0 records, with a
dominating 49 - 14 victory at home.
Saint James won the opening coin toss and elected to defer.
Compared to the remainder of the game, the scoreless first quarter
was extremely different than the others. The Eagles were
stopped on a three and out and a punt was deflected by the Trojan
rushers up into the air only traveling forward 8 yards.
However, the Trojans could not take advantage of the great field
position and pinned ACA with a punt to their own 23 yard
line. ACA embarked on a remarkable drive of 16 plays which
took up over 9 minutes of time, into the second quarter. The
big play was a fourth down conversion pass from backup quarterback
Jalen Clark (as regular starter Reese Solar was injured) to Cole
Schlemmer for a 25 yard reception. On the second play of the
second quarter, after a Trojan penalty, Alden Stroud, ACA's
featured rusher and kick returner, powered in from 4 yards for the
first score of the game. Jaeyeop Lee converted the extra
point and the Eagles were up 7 - 0.
The lead would last less than a minute as the Trojans scored an
amazing four touchdowns within their next six offensive plays. a
far cry from the scoreless first quarter. After an endzone
kickoff, Tony Amerson picked up the first 12 of his 298 rushing
yards, the second largest total in school history. On the
next play, Josh Garnett completed his only pass of the evening to
a Trojan - a hard fought catch by Jackson Raybon for a huge 53
yard gain down to the Eagle 15. On the next play, Amerson
found a hole and ran virtually untouched 15 yards for the Trojans'
first score. Jin Kim's extra point tied the game at 7 with
exactly 10 minutes remaining until halftime. And what an
exciting 10 minutes it would be.
A holding penalty thwarted the next Eagle drive, and on fourth
down Stephen Sadie rushed in and almost cradled the punted
football for a block which was recovered by Houston Hamilton at
the Eagle 23. On the next play, Amerson ran again, breaking
a tackle somehow 10 yards downfield and maintaining his balance
for a 23 yard touchdown run. Kim's kick gave Saint James
their first lead of the evening, one they would not relinquish, at
14 - 7 with still plenty of clock remaining before halftime.
Alabama Christian picked up a first down on the next drive, but
were stopped just inside Trojan territory. This time,
preparing for a possible fake punt, the Trojan punt defense played
safe, and T.R. Robertson took the ball at his 16 yard line and
headed toward the near sidelines, One great block opened a
lane down the chalk, and Robertson earned the first Trojan punt
return touchdown since the 2010 season. Kim's kick gave
Saint James a sudden 21 - 7 lead with still 4 minutes and more
scoring to come.
After an out of bounds kickoff, the Eagles could not take
advantage of the good field position and punted again. From
the Trojan 38, Amerson broke loose on a 61 yard run, matching the
61 yards he had already gained, before being flipped over and
called out of bounds 2 feet short of a 62 yard touchdown. No
trouble, Garnett scored on a quarterback sneak on the next
play. The extra point attempt was wide, but the Trojans had
scored four touchdowns in less than 8 minutes of clock time,
charging to a 27 - 14 lead.
The Eagles joined in on the quick scoring barrage as they scored
on their first offensive play. Clark lofted a sidelines pass
to Grayson Evans. A smart cut move around the defender, and
Evans was off to the races for a 62 yard scoot and score.
The extra point seemed to suddenly change momentum as the Trojan
lead was cut to 27 - 14. Even worse, the Eagles intercepted
a pass and had a chance to score in the last 30 seconds of the
half. Despite a 30 yard pass completion and a 17 yard run,
the Eagles which had previously used their timeouts did not have
enough clock to complete the deal, and a six touchdown period
finally expired with the Trojans having a 13 point lead.
What was absolutely amazing about the first half is that Saint
James ran only 15 offensive plays and possessed the ball for less
than 4 minutes of clock time, despite scoring 28 points. ACA
held the ball for more than twice that on their first scoring
drive alone, and earned over 20 minutes of possession in the first
half. The second half was only seconds within being a 12:00
time of possession push for the teams in stark contrast.
The Trojans, by way of deferment, earned the opening possession of
the third quarter and nearly doubled their game time of possession
on it, a nine play drive. Collin Duncan picked up 13 yards
on the first carry, Amerson ran for 6 consecutive plays down to
the Eagle 1, and it took third and fourth down, but Garnett
managed to sneak in for his second touchdown of the night.
To make up for the missed extra point, Amerson ran in a two point
conversion and the Trojans were up 35 - 14 early in the third
stanza.
After a short ACA punt, Amerson scored his third touchdown on an
untouched run up the middle from 37 yards, and the celebration was
on. Kim's extra point boosted the lead to 42 - 14.
After yet another Eagle punt, T.R. Robertson picked up 18 on his
only offensive carry of the game to offset a holding penalty and
Amerson scored 3 plays later from the 6 to match his 26 point
output (4 touchdowns, 1 two point conversion) from the previous
week. Kim's fifth extra point would wrap up the scoring at
49 - 18.
The Eagles picked up 49 yards on a well-conceived halfback option
pass from Stroud to Carson Hunt, but several plays later Robertson
made another stellar play with an interception at the Trojan 2
yard line. Amerson carried two more times to get the Trojans
out of the shadow of their own goal line - the second carry for 31
yards - and the second string offense would go the rest of the
way. Penalties stalled the drive, and the Eagles had one
last chance to score against the defensive reserves. A
defensive pass interference penalty on what would have been the
last play of the game gave ACA an extra down, but they could not
convert and the Trojans had forcibly ended the undefeated season
of their Capital City Conference neighbor - creating a four way
tie at the top of 4A Region 2 with four one loss teams headed into
the final two weeks of region play.
