October 6,
2017 Thorton-Foster Stadium. Game
Conditions: Clear Game

Saint James scored a touchdown on each of its eight offensive
possessions, and for the second time in three weeks, the second
half clock ran continuously as running back Tony Amerson had his
first four touchdown career game (with a two point conversion run
added in), and quarterback Josh Garnett threw one touchdown pass
and ran for two more scores as the Trojans stomped down on Hornet
Homecoming with a 56 - 12 defeat in Bullock County.
The Trojans earned the first possession after Bullock County won
the coin toss and deferred. Collin Duncan had runs of 14 and
22 yards early to advance the ball to the Hornet 19. From
there, Tony Amerson carried four consecutive times, the fourth
being a five yard run for a touchdown. The extra point was
wide into a bit of an east wind, but the Trojans had an early 6 -
0 lead less than four minutes into the game.
The Hornets were relieved of an early hole on a roughing the
punter penalty deep in their own territory, but could not convert
another first down. From their own 37, Saint James drove 63
yards for their second score. T.R. Robertson took his only
carry of the night for 20 yards down to the Bullock County 23, and
four plays later he was found wide open in the endzone on a 13
yard pass from Josh Garnett for the Trojans' second
touchdown. Amerson converted a two point run to boost the
score to 14 - 0 late in the first quarter.
On the opening play of the second quarter, on third down and 23,
the ball was stripped during a desperation quarterback scramble
and fallen upon by Blake Harper at the Hornet 9. Two four
yard runs by Amerson and a quarterback sneak by Garnett, along
with the first of five consecutive Jin Kim extra points, gave the
Trojans a 21 - 0 lead early in the second quarter.
After forcing a punt, it appeared the Trojans would be stopped
themselves as they lined up for a punt on fourth down and
11. However, punter Garnett once again became quarterback
Garnett as he saw a wide open Robertson on the near sidelines and
connected with him for a long pass and run. The ball was
knocked loose from Robertson just short of the Hornet goal line,
but he outhustled two Hornets to fall upon his own loose ball at
the 1 yard line as part of a 52 yard catch, run, and
recover. Amerson powered in on the next play with his third
touchdown and the Trojans were cruising at 28 - 0 midway through
the second quarter.
The Trojans' special teams shone on the next possession as a bad
punt snap was blocked/smothered by onrushing Trojans and the ball
was recovered at the Hornet 24. A Duncan run of 13 yards and
an Amerson run of 11, his third touchdown, paired with the Kim
extra point gave Saint James a 35 - 0 lead with still 4½ minutes
remaining until halftime.
There was still plenty of scoring to be had in an action packed
second quarter. Bullock County was stopped on downs at their
own 24 yard line. Garnett completed a pass to Cade Crow
moving the ball down to the 6 yard line originally, but offsetting
penalties negated the play. However, a dead ball
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against a Hornet while the
previous penalty discussion was going on moved the ball half the
distance to the goal line, and on the next play Garnett called his
own number on a well run quarterback sweep outside left end for a
12 yard touchdown. Kim's kick gave the Trojans a 42 - 0 lead
with exactly two minutes remaining in the half.
By now, defense substitutes were pouring in for the Trojans.
Bullock County attacked and did pick up a touchdown before
halftime. Dontrey Manley ripped off 31 yards on a first down
carry. On the next play, quarterback Rashad Walker lofted a
long pass to Keeson Borders who made the catch for a 43 yard
gain. From the Trojan 6 yard line, it took four plays, but
as the half was running out, Manley picked up 5 yards on a sweep
for the first Hornet score. A two point conversion pass was
batted down, but the goose egg was off the board for Bullock
County. The ensuing kickoff ran off the remaining time
and Saint James took a 42 - 6 lead into the locker room.
The extended halftime (estimated at 28 minutes) due to the Saint
James band performing their full program and the Homecoming
festivities for the always entertaining Hornet band actually took
more real time than the entire second half as, for the second time
in three weeks, a running clock was employed for quarters three
and four. In fact, there were only four possessions in the
second half between the two teams, with touchdowns concluding
three of those. A long kickoff return by the Hornets was
negated, in part, by a block in the back penalty. The
Hornets managed to run off nearly seven minutes of the third
quarter before being stopped on downs at the Trojan 24 yard
line. From there, on the final appearance by the starters,
Duncan, Garnett, and Amerson kept the ball on the ground for 9
consecutive running plays. Amerson broke off bursts of 26
and 32 during the drive, and was rewarded with his fourth
touchdown of the night from 7 yards out. The third quarter
running clock expired as Kim kicked his fifth and final extra
point of the game, and Saint James was up 49 - 6.
A very well placed Kim kickoff bounced dead at the 1 yard line,
and was picked up by a desperation Hornet returner who could only
advance the ball to the 5 yard line. However, two plays
later, that desperate returner, Manley, broke through the reserves
of the Trojan defensive line and secondary, breaking several
potential tackles, for an 89 yard touchdown scamper, one of the
longest ever by a Trojan opponent. The two point conversion
run failed, and with approximately 8:50 remaining, the lead was
cut to 49 - 12.
The second team Saint James offense generated a touchdown drive of
their own. Kicker Kim, and backup runners Alex Whisenhunt
and Cole Armagost alternated carries. On fourth down from
the Hornet 36. A toss to Bennett Blankenship, who returned
an interception for a touchdown late in the Ashford game, resulted
in a 36 yard touchdown as he just snuck over the goal line past
Hornet defenders. Holt Harrison was called on to convert the
extra point, which he boomed into the east end parking lot, and
its unknown whether that football was ever located. The
touchdown itself occurred at the 1:45 mark on the clock, but after
some confusion on both sides with personnel lining up for the
extra point, converting, and then returning to the sidelines, the
referees mercifully decided to let the remaining time expire
without even a kickoff being attempted, and the Trojans emerged
with their highest scoring total and margin of victory in the 14th
consecutive yearly meeting between the two teams.
Saint James finally eclipsed the over .500 mark with their fourth
win in seven tries, the third win in a row, and looked forward to
three remaining games against playoff contending region teams
Alabama Christian, Dale County, and Trinity in the next three
weeks.
