Saint James scored touchdown on its first four possessions of this
game - the first three of which started within the opponent's 25
yard line. Tony Amerson rushed for 160 yards on 16 carries,
T.R. Robertson corralled three of Saint James' four first half
interceptions as the first string defense withstood the daring arm
of Bulldog quarterback Jahkiel Waller and the Trojans won their
fourth consecutive matchup since the series with the Bulldogs was
renewed with a 40 - 19 pounding in Marbury.
The defense took the field first as Saint James won the opening
coin toss and deferred, and promptly shone with a three and
out. A shanked punt gave the Trojans excellent field
position at the Bulldog 22, and it took only two plays for Saint
James to convert. T.R. Robertson, whose three interceptions
would prove invaluable, earned 12 yards on his only carry of the
evening, and Tony Amerson followed with a 10 yard scamper for his
first of three touchdowns on the next play. Jin Kim's extra
point gave Saint James a 7 - 0 lead less than three minutes into
the game.
Marbury moved the ball on their second possession as Waller
completed several passes and avoided tacklers on quarterback
keepers. However, a long pass was intercepted by Robertson,
his first, at the Trojan 6 and he returned it all the way to the
Marbury 40. A Bulldog personal foul penalty which resulted
in an ejection advanced the ball to the 25. Collin Duncan
converted a key third down and 5 with a 9 yard run, and Amerson
followed suit with his own run down to the goal line.
However, a Trojan personal foul behind the line of scrimmage
threatened the scoring opportunity. On third and 22, Steven
Yergensen's catch and run picked up 20 of the needed yards, and on
fourth down Amerson picked up his second score with a three yard
power off left tackle. The Kim extra point gave Saint James
a 14 point lead late in the opening quarter.
On the next drive, Waller completed several long passes to move
again into Trojan territory. However, Duncan intercepted a
pass at the Trojan 5 and returned it 72 yards before being knocked
out of bounds on a touchdown saving tackle of a potential 95 yard
pick six. From the Bulldog 23, after an incomplete pass,
Blake Harper took the handoff on a counter play and scooted 23
yards for his first touchdown of the season on his only
carry. The extra point made the score 21 - 0 and the Trojans
were on their way after starting their third consecutive
possession in outstanding field position.
The Bulldogs moved back into Trojan territory after a 37 yard pass
completion, but again it was Robertson who intercepted a pass at
the Trojan 13. For Saint James to score on this drive of 87
yards, they would have to gain more yardage than on their first
three scoring drives combined. They did. Amerson
picked up nine yards on a third down conversion, and Stephen Sadie
gained 22 on the next play as the receiver of a Josh Garnett pass
- the second of his two completions. Garnett picked up 13 on
a quarterback keeper and Amerson gained 10 on the next play for
first downs. After an incomplete pass, Duncan from the "Wild
Trojan" called his own number and scampered 30 yards on the far
sideline for the fourth consecutive touchdown. This time the
extra point was wide, but Saint James had a comfortable 27 point
lead with three minutes remaining in the half.
After a Marbury punt, the Trojans turned the ball over for the
only time on a lost fumble. However, several plays later,
Robertson intercepted his third pass - the fourth such
interception of the first half - and Saint James was content to
run out the clock with their four score lead intact. For
those who say time of possession is a game-telling stat, the first
half proved anything but, as Saint James held the ball for just
over 7½ minutes, comparted to over 16 for the Bulldogs, but
outscored the opponents by 27.
More representatively, the teams would "tie" in the second half 13
- 13 as the time of possession was far more equitable.
Duncan returned the second half kickoff 45 yards to the Marbury
33, and it took Saint James less than two minutes on only four
plays to score once more. Three consecutive Amerson runs
covered 32½ yards, and Garnett snuck in from inside the one for
his first touchdown of the evening. The Kim extra point
boosted the lead to 34 - 0. Marbury punted again after
converting one first down. From the Trojan 35, Amerson
carried on first down for 5 yards, and then on the next play made
his carry of the season, breaking two tackles and then escaping
four Bulldog tacklers ten yards downfield as he pulled away for a
jaw-dropping 60 yard touchdown jaunt. The snap on the extra
point went awry, but the night appeared to be over for the
starters as the Trojans led by 40.
A penalty on the touchdown play allowed Kim to kickoff from the 45
yard line, which he confidently boomed through the endzone.
Mostly a second team defense hit the field for the Trojans, and at
the same time, the Bulldogs elected to eschew the passing game
where almost as many passes were being caught by the opponents
instead of the intended targets. After a 12 yard run on
first down, Mason Pilgreen broke loose on a long run very similar
to the Amerson run just plays before, and 68 yards later Marbury
was on the scoreboard. The extra point failed, but the home
team finally had some reason to cheer. On the next
Trojan drive, a punt snap went over the head of Garnett, and he
desperately tried to throw the ball away to avoid a huge
loss. However, intentional grounding was called, and after
the turnover on loss of down, Marbury set up shop at the Saint
James 5 yard line. Pilgreen scored from two yards out two
plays later, and suddenly the Bulldogs had a sniff of momentum as
the lead was cut to 40 - 13.
Saint James would travel inside the Marbury 35 on their next
drive, the final drive for the offensive starters who returned to
thwart the sudden Bulldog surge. The teams traded drives
which basically just ran fourth quarter clock. From their
own 11, Marbury did reach the endzone on a quick 4 play drive
benefiting from a pair of Trojan penalties. Chase Douglas
broke loose for a 48 yard run on his third carry of the evening,
After the second penalty, a face mask call, Pilgreen picked up his
third touchdown of the second half on a 17 yard carry. A
missed extra point led to the final 40 - 19 margin of victory.
The Trojans were able to run out the remaining clock thanks to a
52 yard run by Andrew Sadie which was just inches away from a 63
yard touchdown. From the Bulldog 11, Saint James chose to
down the ball to evaporate the remaining clock, and the Bulldogs
politely allowed them to do so. The Trojans improved to 3 -
3 with four games remaining, all regional battles. Next
upcoming - a trip to Union Springs to face off against the Bullock
County Hornets.
