Saint James scored two first half touchdowns, and thwarted two
Bayside Academy drives with defensive turnovers at the Trojan two
yard line, but several untimely penalties and some tough hard play
in the second half by the Admirals allowed them to overcome the
twelve point lead while stopping Saint James twice late in the
fourth quarter themselves to avenge their 2016 home opening season
loss with a 15 - 12 victory over the Trojans at Carlisle Field.
With a wind behind his back, Admiral kicker Mac Douglas boomed the
opening kickoff of the season through the endzone and the Trojans
started one of many of their drives at or inside their own
20. Saint James could not advance on their opening drive,
but Bayside could not take advantage of good field position after
a punt, punting into the endzone and giving the Trojans another
start at the 20 yard line. Again, no first down could be
earned, but this time Seth Shirley fumbled the ensuing punt and it
was recovered by Shaw Woodson at the Admiral 36. On first
down, a sweep was called to the near side for Collin Duncan.
A great block on the end of the line about three yards downfield
sprang Duncan and he raced down the sideline for a 36 yard
touchdown and the first score of the year. The snap on the
extra point was very low and bouncy, and the kick itself was not
much higher, but Saint James hada turnover-generated score midway
through the first quarter and a six point lead.
Bayside could not take advantage of good field position after the
kickoff return and a booming punt was just knocked into the
endzone by an Admiral defender, giving the Trojans their third
series start at their own 20 yard line. However, another
three and out gave Bayside possession again starting in Trojan
territory. They converted a first down, the first of the
game, on the next to last play of the first quarter.
However, four plays later, a deep pass was batted down by Woodson
as the Trojans regained possession. Josh Garnett attempted
12 passes on the night, but only completed two to Trojans - the
first a catch and run by Tony Amerson giving Saint James its
initial first down of the game. Amerson then followed up
with a 10 yard run, and Saint James was suddenly at
midfield. Two plays later, however, a Garnett screen pass
attempt was read at the line and intercepted by Douglas, who
returned the ball over 55 yards before being tackled at the Trojan
8. A four yard gain on first down was negated by a four yard
loss on second down. On third down, a low pass from Matt
Kalifeh was intercepted at the goal line by Woodson and he got the
ball out to the 2 yard line before going out of bounds, and a
serious Admiral scoring threat was squashed.
The Trojans moved the ball out of harms way, using runs by
Amerson, Duncan, and Stephen Sadie to advance the ball into
Admiral territory. However, the drive stalled and Saint
James was again forced to punt. Neither team could move the
ball well in the first half, especially the Admirals, who
were held to two first half first downs. A shanked punt gave
the Trojans a chance to score in the last minute of the first
half, and they struck. A reverse pass thrown by Duncan was
caught by an increasingly open T.R. Robertson as he crossed the
goal line, and the Trojans had doubled their lead with less than
30 seconds remaining until halftime. After a timeout, a two
point conversion run was attempted but Amerson failed to
gain. However, Saint James had seized momentum and carried a
12 point lead into halftime.
The Admirals took the second half kickoff and began their
strongest drive of the game thus far. A defensive holding
penalty aided the early yardage, and a 35 yard completion from
Will Kalifeh to Nathan Cook moved the ball into the Trojan red
zone at the 11 yard line. However, three plays later, the
Trojan defense shone again, forcing a fumble which was recovered
by Saint James at the two yard line once more, the second such
deep recovery. Duncan earned one first down with a nine yard
run several plays later, but a punt was forced and the Admirals
took over at their own 33. Three consecutive runs by Seth
Shirley netted 20 yards, and then after a time out, Kalifeh lofted
a deep pass to Shirley, who outdueled his defender to make the
catch and dash the remaining 25 yards for the first Bayside score
of the game. Douglas converted the extra point, and the
Trojan lead was cut to five with just over three minutes remaining
in the third quarter.
A nice kickoff return by Robertson gave Saint James good field
position at their own 37, and a pair of double digit runs by
Stephen Sadie gave the Trojans a first down at the Bayside
39. However, a costly delay of game penalty dampened the
momentum, and four plays later the Trojans could not convert their
first down as the third quarter ended. Shirley, Cook, and
Kalifeh continued to move the ball in small chunks down toward the
Trojan goal line again, but the Saint James defense held and
forced a fourth down and 7 at the 12 yard line. The Admirals
lined up for a field goal, but perfectly executed a fake as the
holder Kalifeh found a wide open tight end Tucker Milteer in the
endzone who made a diving catch of the pass for a go-ahead
touchdown. Being ahead now by one, the Admirals opted for a
two point conversion and Kalifeh tossed a sideline pass to Cook
who wrestled with a defender but managed to stretch the ball
across the goal line for the conversion, and Bayside had its first
lead at 15 - 12 with 7 plus minutes remaining in the game.
Another good return by Robertson and a 14 yard first down run by
Duncan moved the ball quickly into Admiral territory. A
defensive pass interference penalty which saved a nearly 40 yard
gain and perhaps a touchdown gave Saint James a first down at the
Admiral 35. Consecutive hard runs by Amerson picked up 15
yards, but the Bayside defense stiffened and forced a field goal
attempt from 44 yards which was low and short, giving Bayside a
new possession with just 2:15 remaining. The Trojans
exhausted their time outs, but prevented any forward movement by
Bayside, and a shanked punt was downed at the 32 yard line.
At that point, a bizarre series of plays unfolded. First, a
false start penalty moved the ball back to the 37. Three
consecutive passes were incomplete and left the Trojans with a
desperation last chance fourth and 15 at the 37 yard line with
just 20 seconds remaining. On the fourth down play, an
Admiral blitzer had a clear shot to quarterback Garnett and he was
hit. Unseen at first was that the ball had been knocked
loose as Garnett went down. However, he got back up,
gathered in the ball, and tried to continue the play. Most
of the players on both teams and slowed, thinking the play had
ended. Garnett managed to spot a potential receiver
downfield and lofted a pass downfield. The pass was
incomplete, but the receiver was interfered with and a flag was
thrown. The referees discussed the play for almost a minute,
but decided the play had continued and the penalty was
enforced. However, an important point was overlooked by most
everyone, including the on-the-field referees. The penalty
for defensive pass interference is 15 yards from the original line
of scrimmage. Remember, before first down, the false start
penalty set up a first down and (exactly) 15 yards. The
three incomplete passes meant no change of line of
scrimmage. The pass interference penalty which was a 15 yard
penalty should have moved the ball to the exact spot where a first
down should have been achieved. However, instead of a first
down and 10 at the 22 yard line, with the clock stopped just under
10 seconds for the first down and the incomplete pass/penalty, the
Trojans would likely have had at least one chance to gain yardage
or perhaps toss for the endzone. The penalty was actually
marked about 14 yards, coming up short of the first down, and
instead of first and ten, fourth and one resulted at the 23 yard
line. Nevertheless, the situation gave the Trojans one more
opportunity to send the game to overtime with a tying field
goal. Jin Kim's try for a 39 yard field goal was
considerably higher, longer, and more on target than the previous
attempt but fell about 3 yards short of success and the Admirals
ran out the clock and claimed the season open victory.
