November 4,
2016 Carlisle Field. Game

The double rushing duo of Blake Underwood and Tony Amerson, both
well over 1000 yards for the season, simply improved their
respective totals as the Trojans rushed for over 360 yards and
were never stopped on offense until the last play of the game gave
the Trojans their first opening round playoff win in 13 years as
they defeated first time opponent, the Satsuma Gators, 49 - 21.
The Saint James offense was in prime form on this night, as they
were only stopped twice, and neither really by the defense.
The second time was when the fourth quarter clock expired.
The first time, unfortunately, was on the first offensive play of
the game as T.R. Robertson with a rare carry had the ball come
loose and be recovered by the Gators at the Trojan 41. A
pair of 14 yard pass completions from Andrew Barfoot to Luke
Montalvo, the second of which moved the ball down to the one yard
line, gave Satsuma the first scoring opportunity. Two plays
later, Barfoot carried in from a yard out and Satsuma was up 7 - 0
midway through the first quarter.
Saint James would score touchdowns on each of their next seven
offensive possessions. Robertson helped redeem himself on
the Gator kickoff with a nice return. Underwood and Amerson
carried down the field, with Josh Garnett's only incomplete pass
of the game mixed in. Amerson scored from 5 yards out to
complete the 10 play drive, and Jin Kim, who converted each of his
7 extra point attempts (one shy of tying a school record), knotted
the game at 7 late in the first quarter.
A Satsuma block in the back penalty negated a nice kickoff return,
and on third down Barfoot appeared to have broken loose on a
keeper for a first down from deep in his own territory.
However, the ball was knocked loose and fallen upon by Saint James
at the Gatot 30 yard line. Five plays later, on the opening
play of the second quarter, Amerson scored his second touchdown,
this one from 6 yards out, and the Kim extra point gave the
Trojans a lead they would not forfeit, at 14 - 7.
After a Gator three and out, the Trojans traveled 61 yards in 6
plays. Robertson was the recipient of the first of two
complete passes from Garnett, for 10 yards, and several plays
later Underwood broke loose for his first of four touchdowns on
the night, from 37 yards out, and the Trojans were up 21 - 7
midway through the second quarter.
Satsuma again went three and out, and Saint James managed the
clock well to get one more score in before halftime on a 70 yard
drive. Atchison Hubbard caught the other pass from Garnett
on a big 26 yard gain on a post pattern. Two plays later,
Amerson scored his third and final touchdown of the evening on a
22 yard scamper. Kim's extra point gave the Trojans a
comfortable 28 - 7 lead with just over a minute remaining in the
first half. However, Satsuma benefited from a mysterious
personal foul penalty which was called after the extra point
conversion, forcing the Trojans to kick off from the 20.
Justin Tindle, who was the Gator defensive star of the game if
they had one, returned the kickoff into Trojan territory, and the
Gators took advantage of the good field position. On third
and 12, Barfoot lofted a pass to Peyton Reed down the
middle. Two potential Trojan tacklers allowed him to break
loose, and Robertson somehow ran him down from a bad angle to
tackle Reed at the 3 yard line, at least temporarily saving a
touchdown. Satsuma was lucky to retain ball possession after
a busted play pushed the ball back to the 10 yard line, and the
Gators had one time out remaining which they called with 13
seconds remaining. On the next play, Barfoot had good enough
pass protection to wait before he finally found an uncovered Reed
in the endzone for a score with 2.2 seconds remaining until
halftime. The extra point cut the "comfortable" 21 point
lead to a less-so 14 point lead at halftime.
The Gators earned one first down on their opening possession of
the second half, but a 9 yard sack of Barfoot forced a punt.
Even after halftime, the Trojan offense remained as dynamic as the
music played by guest DJ Ziggy in the absence of the Trojan band
which was away competing at a regional Bands of America
competition in San Antonio, Texas. Saint James marched 82
yards in 7 plays - the biggest play a 49 yard jaunt by Amerson
which was the longest gainer of the game. Underwood scored
from a yard out several plays later, and the Trojans had regained
their "comfortable" 21 point lead midway through the third
quarter, at 35 - 14.
Colin Duncan, hero of the Trinity game with three interceptions,
picked up another one after a Barfoot pass was tipped, and the
Trojans were in business at the Gator 30. Four plays later,
including a 12 yard carry by Stephen Sadie, Underwood was in the
endzone again with a 5 yard carry and a 42 - 14 Trojan lead with
still over 15 minutes remaining in the game.
A holding penalty and a sack on the next drive thwarted Satsuma
progress, and the tiring Gator defense returned to the
field. A short punt gave Saint James good field position
again at the Satsuma 41, and Underwood finished up his 200 plus
yard rushing performance with his fourth touchdown, from 7 yards,
and Saint James broke an all-time playoff scoring record as Kim's
seventh extra point gave the Trojans a 49 - 14 lead over the
Gators, breaking the old mark of 47 set in a 1999 clash against
Slocomb.
By now, the Trojans were piling in the substitutions.
Satsuma managed to methodically move down the field, although
using up half of the fourth quarter in the process, for a late
touchdown. Peyton Thomas carried for the final 7 yards and
the ending score of 49 - 21. The Gators were more than
content to let the second string offense run out the clock, which
they did, and Saint James finally overcame the first round playoff
hump while looking forward to a much more familiar foe for the
second round of the playoffs - a recent regional opponent on the
yearly schedule - the Tallassee Tigers.
