Six different Saint James players, including three seniors on
Senior Night 2016, scored as the Trojans captured their seventh
area/region championship all time with a surprisingly convincing
40 - 7 victory over first time opponent, the Dale County Warriors.
Saint James won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening
game kickoff. An offside penalty by the Warriors on their
kickoff foretold perhaps what kind of night it would be. A
second kickoff was returned to the Trojan 39. Tony Amerson
picked up a frist down with a 13 yard run, but the Warrior defense
prevented further intrusion. However, their offense could
not generate a first down, and Shaw Woodson made the first big
play of the night returning a punt back to the Warrior 29.
After a one yard gain on first down, Blake Underwood took
the handoff on the next play and found a hole carved by the Trojan
offensive line, breaking through into the secondary and squeezing
through two defensive backs at the ten yard line barreling into
the endzone for the first score of the game. Jin Kim's extra
point put the Trojans up 7 - 0 midway through the first quarter.
Dale County committed their first turnover of the game on the next
drive, the first such Saint James has benefited by in three weeks,
as Blake Harper intercepted a Casey Daughtry pass at the Trojan 48
and returned it to the Warrior 48. Despite an illegal motion
penalty, Saint James moved the ball into the Warrior red zone once
more. From the 12 yard line, T.R. Robinson took a handoff on
a sweep play which caught the Warriors off guard as someone
besides # 1 (Underwood) and # 21 (Amerson) was carrying the
ball. Once around the corner he ran untouched into the
endzone for another touchdown. Kim's kick doubled the lead
to 14 - 0 late in the first quarrer.
It appeared the Warriors finally had a first down on the next
drive as workhorse running back Tae Henderson broke loose for a
long gain into Trojan territory, but it was negated by a chop
block penalty. This resulted in yet another punt which led
to another Trojan drive of 66 yards. Amerson gained nearly
half of the drive on a 32 yard carry up the middle where he was
just brought down inside the 25 yard line, and several plays later
senior Atchison Hubbard, who arguably played the finest game of
his career on both the offensive and defensive sides combined, was
amazingly wide open in the endzone as the recipient of a Josh
Garnett touchdown pass. The extra point was wide, but the
Trojans were now up 20 - 0 early in the second quarter.
The Warriors earned their initial first down of the game and their
first legal venture into Trojan territory, barely, on the next
drive, but returned the ball to Saint James by failing to convert
a fourth down. The Trojans ran some clock after earning one
first down, and pinned Dale County with a punt at their own 10
yard line. A face mask penalty was basically offset a play
later by a block in the back penalty, and on a desperation heave
up the middle Shaw Woodson intercepted another Warrior pass and
returned it to the Dale County 34 giving the Trojans an unexpected
chance to add points before the end of the first half.
Hubbard caught a 16 yard pass to advance the ball to the Warrior
7, but a holding penalty forced the ball back and necessitated a
32 yard field goal attempt by Kim which was wide left, and the
half closed with Saint James maintaining their 20 point lead.
To start the second half, the Warriors began creating holes in a
Saint James defensive line which was virtually non-penetratable in
the opening half. Tae Henderson ripped off runs of 19 and 31
yards to move the ball into the Trojan redzone for the first time,
but a wayward pass was intercepted by Robertson in the back of the
endzone on fourth down. It took the Trojans only four plays
to traverse 80 yards. Amerson picked up 28 on a quick
handoff and change of direction, and then on a simple double
handoff misdirection play, Stephen Sadie found nothing but dry
grass ahead of him as 10 Warrior defenders were misled into
thinking Amerson still had the ball. Quarterback Garnett was
leading the way looking for someone to block, but the only
defender nearby was the cornerback assigned to wideout Robinson,
who had him well occupied. Sadie's carry of 42 yards, easily
his longest of the season, went for a touchdown. Again the
extra point failed, but Saint James had a commanding 26 - 0 lead.
Warrior woes continued as the kickoff was muffed and returned only
to the 21 yard line. On first down, Henderson broke through
the line on a carry, but changed direction where Woodson knocked
the ball out of his hands. It was fallen upon by Grant
Silverman at the 24, and on the very next play Amerson ran
untouched through a massive hole etched into the tiring and
dejected Warrior defense for a 24 yard score. This time the
Kim extra point was good, and Saint James was cruising at 33 - 0
midway through the third quarter.
Luck was not on the Dale County side as on the next drive, despite
a defensive pass interference penalty, the Warriors could not
convert a first down. The penalty led to a second down and 1
after a first play sack by the combination of Cade Crow and Gage
Parten. Offensive holding behind the line of scrimmage moved
the ball back, and the third down was unconverted. After yet
another punt, Saint James took only six running plays, four of
those double digit running first downs, to score yet again.
Quarterback Garnett was rewarded with the carry on a four yard
sweep for the touchdown, the sixth different player to score on
the evening. Kim's extra point meant the end of the night
for the starters as Saint James had amassed a 40 - 0 lead in the
last minute of the third quarter.
The Warriors finally dented the scoreboard as Henderson broke away
for 54 yards on a touchdown on the ensuing drive, and the extra
point by left footed Michael Holt ended the scoring for the night
at 40 - 7. Both teams featured reserves for most of
the remainder of the game. Alex Whisenhunt had three
carries, one of them for 27 yards, allowing the Trojans and
mercifully for the Warriors to run out the clock.
Saint James knew they would have at least one more home game this
season, three weeks down the road to start the playoffs, after a
trip to Trinity whose playoff chances were ended by other results
and a well-earned off week the final week of the regular season.
