Carlisle Field. HOMECOMING Game
Conditions: Clear, very low humidity Game
Temperature: 78 Wind: none
The Saint James defense had first half problems with the largeness
of Bullock County, and three turnovers hurt the Trojans cause as
well. However, Blake Underwood scored four touchdowns
in one game for the second time in his career helping lead Saint
James to another region and homecoming victory. The 26 - 14
win accented the Homecoming theme of "How Sweet It Is to be a
Trojan".
For the first time all season, Saint James did not enjoy the
opening possession on offense, as the Hornets won the coin toss
and elected to receive. Despite being pinned in at their own
8 yard line after the kickoff, it seemed to be a proper decision
as Bullock County ripped off four quick first downs, two on long
runs by Don'tray Manley, and suddenly the Hornets were on the
Trojan 30 yard line. However, a Gage Parten sack eventually
led to a punt. A holding penalty by Saint James stalled any
momentum the defense had earned, but Josh Garnett boomed a 50 yard
punt to once again change field position. Several plays
later, on fourth down and 1 from the Trojan 42, Houston Hamilton
made one of his several big plays in the game by grabbing Xavier
Holmes and dropping him heavily for a three yard loss. Saint
James would finally get its offense in gear, as they raced
exclusively on the ground for 55 yards in 4 plays. A Tony
Amerson run of 14 yards was sandwiched by Blake Underwood runs of
5, 7, and 29 yards for the first score of the game. Jin
Kim's extra point gave Saint James a 7 - 0 lead late in the first
quarter.
The Hornets would again move into Trojan territory, but would be
stopped on an incomplete fourth down pass. However, on the
next play, the Trojans committed one of their uncharacteristic
three turnovers of the game as a fumbled snap could not be
handled. Several plays later, a face mask penalty would move
the ball into the Trojan red zone, and then Jarvis Burgess would
run in from 12 yards out for a Bullock County touchdown. A
two point conversion pass to an open receiver could not connect,
however, and Saint James maintained a narrow one point lead early
in the second quarter.
An out of bounds kickoff gave the Trojans good field position at
the 35, and three plays later Josh Garnett tossed a short 10 yard
pass to Underwood who found plenty of running room down the near
sidelines. He was caught just as he reached the endzone, but
did dive in for the score. The extra point kick was wide
left, but Saint James again had their touchdown margin of a lead
at 13 - 6.
It lasted no more than 15 seconds. After an endzone kickoff,
Manley took a handoff intended to go to his right. He broke
two tackles behind the line of scrimmage, shifted back toward the
left and broke one more tackle, and then saw plenty of green grass
ahead of him. Two Trojan pursuers appeared to have good
angles to keep Manley out of the endzone. One tackle came up
just short and the other, like the previous offensive play, took
place just outside the goal line, and Manley was able to power
into the endzone with a very impressive 80 yard touchdown
jaunt. This time the two point conversion, a run by Xavier
Holmes, was just good enough, and surprisingly to some, Bullock
County held a 14 - 13 lead midway through the second quarter.
Saint James had another long drive in progress, aided by a face
mask penalty as a Hornet drive was earlier, but on second down
from the Hornet 12, Garnett was forced out of his pocket to
scramble and turned back across the field to throw toward what
appeared to be a wide open receiver in the endzone. However,
the pass was intercepted by Perice Williams, who returned the ball
50 yards from his own 3 to the Trojan 47, and suddenly the Hornets
were threatening again. They converted one first down, but
an incomplete pass on fourth down from the Saint James 28 ended
the threat, and allowed the Trojans to safely run out the clock
anticipating the opening possession of the third quarter.
The second half got off to a great start as Tony Amerson returned
the kickoff 60 yards to the Bullock County 27. Underwood
converted a key third down with a 7 yard run, and then from the
Hornet 7 yard line, on a play similar to his earlier touchdown
reception, he hauled in a short pass from Garnett. The
endzone was in sight, but he was stood up at the goal line.
However, Underwood kept his legs moving and spun off the potential
tackler into the endzone for a score on what would be the final of
three pass completions in the game for Saint James - two of them
for touchdowns. A two point conversion run failed, but Saint
James was back on top 19 - 14 early in the third quarter.
The defense forced the Hornets back 10 yards on their first three
offensive plays, and an all out punt block was called. The
punter Holmes got the kick away, but the punt was muffed and with
no assistance back in the blocking department, the Hornets
recovered - the third of the three turnovers, and Bullock
County was threatening to score again. However, the
Trojan defense which was pierced with over 230 Hornet offensive
yards in the first half would give away less than a tenth of that
total in the second half. On fourth and 11 from the Trojan
25, the Hornets were again stopped on a five yard carry, and Saint
James regained possession. The teams traded punts toward the
end of the third quarter. Saint James would drive into
Hornet territory to start the final stanza, but would themselves
turn the ball over on downs after a fourth down incompletion.
The inspired defense forced an incomplete pass, two short losses
on runs, and then a punt which was deflected but carried to the
midfield stripe. From there, Saint James embarked on its
game clinching touchdown drive. The workhorse Underwood
would carry for every play except one in an eight play drive, with
the final run from 7 yards for a touchdown. Kim converted
the extra point which led to the eventual final margin of 26 -
14. Bullock County was forced to punt again from deep inside
their own territory, and Saint James drove as far as the Hornet 6
before allowing the clock to run out and resulting in a definitely
''sweet" Homecoming 2016 victory.
