For the first 40 minutes of this game, Saint James looked
absolutely dominant in all three phases of the game - offense,
defense, and special teams. However, when the substitutes
began entering, the momentum overturned abruptly, and despite
having a 37 point lead in the fourth quarter, the Trojans almost
had to seriously hold on as the Marbury Bulldogs scored three long
touchdowns, one in each of those three phases of the game, to make
a laugher of a game a concerning 37 - 22 victory.
Saint James for the third consecutive week lost the coin toss but
thanks to deferment still earned the possession, and they drove
smartly in 10 plays using up nearly five minutes of the first
quarter clock. After an incomplete pass on the first play,
Tony Amerson, Colin Duncan, and Blake Underwood shared the load
exclusively on the ground with Underwood scoring from the Bulldog
9. Jin Kim's extra point gave the Trojans a 7 - 0 lead.
The Trojans quickly had their second possession of the game as a
Bulldog runner had the ball taken away from him by Sterling Jones,
and Saint James had first down on the Marbury 34. Josh
Garnett found an unbelievably wide open receiver in T.R. Robertson
down the middle of the field for an easy pitch and catch for a 34
yard touchdown, and Kim's kick doubled the lead quickly to 14 -
0. The 34 yard line was unlucky again for Marbury on the
next possession, as a fourth down and one attempt led to another
fumble and Saint James taking over on the Bulldog 27. A
potential touchdown run by Tony Amerson was negated by a block in
the back penalty, and another false start penalty slowed the
drive, but Garnett tossed his second touchdown pass of the first
quarter - this one to Jackson Raybon who made his first reception
of the year count from 17 yards out. Kim's kick boosted the
lead to 21 - 0, still in the first quarter.
The Trojans forced another Marbury punt early in the second
quarter, and began another long drive which took up much of the
quarter, but they could not convert on a pass play on fourth down
from the Bulldog 24. Two plays later, the Bullodgs were
lucky to recover a fumble after a pass reception which was kicked
forward nearly 10 yards. However, three plays later, a bad
shotgun snap forced yet another fumble which the Trojans fell
upon. Robertson caught his second long pass of the game to
switch ends of the field to the Marbury 18, but a holding penalty
stalled the drive and Kim was called in to attempt a career-long
35 yard field goal, which he converted, and the Trojans took a 24
- 0 lead to halftime.
The Bullodgs made their first big play of the game by returning
the second half kickoff 61 yards to the Trojan 25. However,
on fourth down, another bad snap resulted in a lost fumble and 15
lost yards. From their own 40, the Trojans drove 60
yards. Stephen Sadie picked up 19 on a run with 5 yards
added on for a face mask penalty. Two plays later, Amerson
ran the same play as earlier where his score was erased by a
penalty. This time, his 29 yard jaunt gave the Trojans
another score. The extra point failed this time, but Saint
James was up 30 - 0 four minutes into the third quarter. The
Bulldogs began moving the ball against an increasing number of
Saint James substitutes, and their next drive got as far as the
Trojan 11 before a fourth down incompletion turned the ball over
yet again. Amerson, who easily had a career high in rushing
yardage, ran for 20 to get the Trojans in better field position,
and later in the drive broke off a 32 yard rumble down to the
Bulldog 9. Two plays later, Sadie scored from five yards out
and the Trojans appeared to be cruising with a 37 - 0 lead and
just 10-plus minutes remaining in the game.
"Not so fast!" Four plays after an out of bounds kickoff,
Marbury quarterback Austin Stinard finally connected on a long fly
patternr to Brandon Wilkes, who outran potential tacklers for a 50
yard touchdown. Jacob Caver just crossed the goal line on a
two point conversion, and the Trojan lead was cut to 37 - 8.
A recurring them for the Trojans second offense this season,
unfortunately,. has been the inability for the quarterback to
cleanly accept center snaps. This happened again on the
first play of the next Trojan drive, but Saint James was lucky to
recover the loose ball. Three plays later, however, Saint
James was forced to punt for the first time in the game.
Backup punter Tony Amerson boomed a 45 yarder back to Brandon
Wilkes, who fielded the ball on his own 14. He headed away
from traffic toward his friendly sidelines, avoided two groups of
tacklers and one tremendous block/hit, and broke away from the
pack toward midfield and raced for an 86 yard punt return for a
touchdown, the longest such ever given up by a Saint James Trojan
team. Caleb Cleckler kicked the extra point this time, and
Marbury had closed the gap to 37 - 15 with still 5 minutes
remaining.
The fumbled snap rared its ugly head on the Trojans on the third
play of the following drive, and Ezekiel Cheeks picked up the
loose ball at the Trojan 33 and raced in untouched for a third
touchdown in just over three minutes for the Bulldogs. This
time Mikal Simersky was called in to attempt the extra point,
which he converted, and suddenly Marbury was within two
possessions, at 37 - 22.
The Trojans first string was quickly sent back onto the
field. After Sterling Jones recoverred an onside kick and
Amerson ran for 37 yards down to the Bulldog 14, the Trojans
had used enough to clock to run out the remaining time and
preserve the victory in their final regular season non-region
game, with four region games and a playoff spot and possibly a
region title awaiting them in the next four weeks.
