September 16,
2016. W.H. Brown Field Game
Condistions: Mostly cloudy, warm Game
Temperature: 85 Wind: Negligible
The Saint James offense was nearly unstoppable and the defense
created several turnovers leading directly to scores as the
Trojans visited Ashford for a second consecutive season and once
again came away with a region victory, defeating the Yellow
Jackets by a comfortable margin of 43 - 21.
Similar to the previous game, the Trojans failed to win the coin
toss but still received the opening kickoff after the Yellow
Jackets. Not similar to the previous game was the ease in
which the Trojans moved down the field methodically for a
touchdown on their opening possession. Tony Amerson's return
of a short kickoff to the Trojan 42 was a great start. An
Ashford encroachment penalty proceeded a Stephen Sadie run for a
first down, and his 17 yard run following the first pass reception
of the season by Shaw Woodson gave Saint James first down at the
Jacket 6. Two consecutive runs by Blake Underwood were
enough to register the first touchdown, and Jin Kim's extra point
gave Saint James a 7 - 0 lead just minutes into the game.
Ashford had good field position after an out of bounds kickoff,
but four plays later they committed the first of their four
turnovers, a fumble, and Saint James was in business at the
Ashford 40. The Trojans got to the Jacket 4, but were
stopped on consecutive tries by Underwood. Kim was called in
to convert a short field goal, which he did, and the lead was 10 -
0 late in the first quarter.
Confusion on the ensuing kickoff return pinned the Jackets, and
after failing to earn a first down, a Woodson punt return of 22
yards gave the Trojans excellent field position at the Jacket
30. On the first three plays of the second quarter,
Underwood raced for 6 amd 10 yards, and then Tony Amerson carried
in from 7 yards for his first touchdown of the game. The
extra point boosted the Trojan lead to 17 less than 13 minutes
into the contest.
A fumble after an Ashford pass reception was fallen upon by Steven
Yergensen, and the Trojans took immediate advantage again.
On first down from the Jacket 44, Josh Garnett found a wide open
Wes Cherry and hit im in stride with a nice pass on his way to an
untouched 44 yard catch and run touchdown. The extra point
this time failed, but Saint James had built a significant 23 - 0
lead over Ashford midway through the second quarter.
Ashford, who actually outgained Saint James in yardage, finally
got their offense in gear and drove for a score. A 28 yard
pass from Corey Rice to Jacorey Underwood (no known relation to
Blake) came up just short of the goal line, but on the next play
Stevante Tullis bowled over from the 1 yard line. The extra
point by Dawson Pope gave the Jackets their first score and cut
the lead to 23 - 7 with less than five minutes remaining until
halftime.
Saint James moved down the field almost exclusively on the legs of
Underwood on the next drive. A Garnett keeper ended with a
late hit out of bounds penalty which tacked on more yardage.
On the eighth play of the drive, Garnett kept from less than a
yard out. Kim's extra point was good, but not good to
someone who chose to park their car behind the goalpost.
Boink. The Trojans were up 30 - 7 with just over 2 minutes
until halftime.
The final drive of the half by Ashford was stopped by a Shaw
Woodson interception, and the Trojans very contently took their 23
point lead into the halftime locker room.
Ashford did not take long at all to strike in the third quarter,
as on the second play, the Rice to Underwood connection was again
successful. A Trojan attempt at an interception was just
late, and Underwood had nothing but clear sailing ahead of him
after receiving the Rice toss for a 66 yard catch and run
touchdown. The Pope extra point quickly cut the lead to two
possessions, at 30 - 14. Stephen Sadie's 20 yard run on the
first offensive play for Saint James got the Trojan offense
rolling again, and the running game of Underwood and Amerson
advanced the ball down to the Jacket 19 where the drive
slowed. However, Garnett found a wide open Atchison Hubbard
in the Jacket secondary - and the pass was slightly underthrown so
Hubbard had to come back toward the line of scrimmage to make the
catch at the 3 yard line. He did, and walked into the
endzone with Garnett's second touchdown toss of the night.
The Kim kick returned the lead to 23 points, at 37 - 14.
From this point in the game, 5:19 remaining in the third quarter,
Saint James would only run 5 more offensive plays the entire
night. Ashford's next drive was benefited by a late hit
penalty on a fake punt run which had originally come up well short
of a first down. However, upon reaching the Trojan 21, a
fourth down pass was incomplete which gave the ball back to the
Trojans as the third quarter was nearing completion. After a
three and out, where the third down run came up mere inches short
of a first down, Garnett punted for the first and only time of the
evening. Ashford began moving down the field, and benefited
from a defensive holding penalty to convert a first down.
However, two plays later, a handoff was fumbled and Colin Duncan
picked up the ball and sprinted 52 yards to the Trojan endzone for
a defensive score. Backup kicker Jackson Raybon had an
attempt at a varsity PAT, but the kick was shanked. Saint
James held down a comfortable 43 - 14 lead however.
From then on, both teams substituted freely, and after a run of 34
yards by Tullis which put him over 100 yards for the night, few if
any starters remained in the game. Freshman Emanual Pittman
ended the drive with a 2 yard run for a touchdown and what would
be the fianl score of the evening after Pope's extra point.
Saint James would not start another scoring drive, as
unfortunately on his first varsity snap Collier Dean fumbled and
an interior defensive lineman for Ashford fell on the
football. An Ashford touchdown several plays later was wiped
out by a holding call, and the second string defense managed to
stop the Jackets, holding a runner for 14 yards on fourth down and
15. One snap was all the Trojans needed to salt away the
region victory and a three game long distance road winning streak.
