Saint James scored twice in the first two game possessions, once
on offense and then on defense, and held on despite committing a
dozen penalties while defeating first time football opponent
Bayside Academy in Daphne by a 21 - 0 margin.
Tony Amerson returned a short kickoff to the Trojan 40, and Saint
James spent nearly half of the first quarter travelling 60 yards
for their first score of the season. A 24 yard pass and run
from Josh Garnett to Blake Underwood helped overcome a holding
penalty, and yet another holding penalty led to a fourth down and
15 from the Admiral 22. Garnett found Colin Duncan open
about 8 yards downfield, and he swiveled to the right avoiding one
potential tackler, and then outraced other chasers to the endzone
for the touchdown. Jin Kim kicked his first of three
successful extra points, and Saint James was up 7 - 0 almost
midway through the first quarter.
Bayside picked up a large chunk of yardage on their first
offensive play, a 29 yard pass from Reid Norton to Henry
Wise. On third down, a defensive breakdown led to a wide
receiver on the near side of the field being left all alone.
Norton tried to loft a pass to the wide open player, but the pass
fluttered, giving T.R. Robertson time to run over and make an easy
interception of the duck pass. As he raced down the
sidelines, he had little interference from non-Trojans players and
he ran 73 yards untouched into the endzone for another quick Saint
James touchdown. The extra point gave Saint James a perhaps
surprising 14 - 0 lead still in the first quarter.
The Admirals moved into Trojan territory again, but a sack and a
delay of game penalty, one of only two assessed against Bayside in
the game, forced a punt on the next to last play of the first
quarter. Neither team did much in a quick moving second
quarter offensively. Bayside drove as deeply as the Trojan
19 on their next drive, but a desperation fourth down pass was
thrown to an offensive lineman, who failed to catch the pass
anyways - had he done so it would have been an illegal
catch. Saint James picked up one first down on their next
drive, but with only a minute and a half remaining in the half,
Bayside chose to play conservatively and only advanced as far as
their own 40 yard line before the halftime siren.
Bayside committed their second turnover of the game on the opening
drive of the third quarter, as quarterback Norton mishandled a
snap and the Trojans fell on the ball at the Admiral 40.
However, two false start penalties negated the good field
position, but Josh Garnett's punt , the fourth of only four
offensive plays the Trojans would run in the third quarter, pinned
Bayside deep in their own territory at the 11 yard line. The
Admirals used up nearly 8 minutes of clock, including all of the
remaining third quarter, on their next drive. A first down
holding penalty pushed Bayside back inside their own 5 yard line,
but on the next play Norton lifted a fine pass to John Bryant who
made an over the shoulder catch at the Admiral 34. Fourteen
consecutive running plays, with a crucial Trojan defensive penalty
thrown in, moved the ball down to the Trojan 3 yard line on an
upcoming fourth down as the third quarter ended.
However, after trading ends of the field, the fourth down play was
poorly executed, and even though a fumbled pitch was recovered by
Bayside back at the 8 yard line, fourth down turned the ball back
over to the Trojan defense which managed to hold the Admirals
scoreless after a 16 play drive. Underwood's legs provided
Saint James with a first down to get them out of a field position
hole, but yet another false start penalty slowed the drive and
forced another Saint James punt. After a short gain on first
down, the Admirals mis-completed two consecutive passes, and on
fourth down Houston Hamilton crushed quarterback Norton behind the
line of scrimmage on a possession changing sack which seemed to
finally deflate Bayside.
On the ensuing play from the Admiral 45, Underwood took a handoff,
wriggled through a few attempted tackles, and broke away for a 45
yard touchdown which sealed the game. Kim's extra point gave
Saint James a 21 - 0 lead with less than 7 minutes
remaining. Bayside could make no headway on their next
drive, and on fourth down a very high snap went well over the
punter's head. He recovered the loose ball, but was downed
by Trojans at the Bayside 15. The Trojans picked up one
first down trying to run the clock out, but a delay of game
penalty cost them valuable yardage, and Saint James turned over
the ball on downs at the 3 yard line. With less than a
minute remaining, Bayside perhaps wisely ran two simple plays to
exhaust the game clock, and the Trojans made it two for two in
football visits to Baldwin County, the other win being a 2002
victory in Gulf Shores.
