Freshman Tony Amerson, with his first significant ofensive play of
the season, rushed for over 100 yards helping Saint James to break
open a close game after the first quarter with a 28 point
onslaught before halftime when later numerous reserves took over
on Senior Night 2015 as the Trojans readied for the State Playoffs
with a convincing 42 - 22 home victory over the 5A Marbury
Bulldogs.
Saint James won the opening coin toss, elected to receive, and
marched smartly down the field on their opening possession.
Ivan Villageois, on his only carry of the evening, countered left
for a 13 yard gain. Two plays later, Connor Collier found
Dozier Dean wide open down the middle of the field for a 35 yard
catch to the Marbury 7. On the next play, Christian Barkley
took the handoff and went almost untouched into the endzone for
the first score of the evening. McKay Taylor kicked his
first of six consecutive extra points giving Saint James an early
and quick 7 - 0 lead.
The Bulldogs lost yardage on their opening kickoff return, and a
delay of game penalty before the first snap pushed them even
farther back and led to a short punt returned by Dean to the
Marbury 37. However, a quarterback sack forced Saint James
back to midfield and their own punt. Marbury finally got
some offense as the Bulldogs connected on a 35 yard pass of their
own from Kevin Wilkes to Brandon Wilkes. After another
Wilkes to Wilkes combination for nine yards, the Bulldogs had
first down on the Trojan 28. However, a no gain run and
three consecutive incomplete, well-defensed passes turned the ball
back over to the Trojans.
Saint James, as the hospitable host, returned the favor as the
ball was knocked away from quarterback Collier during a sack and
the ensuing fumble was returned by Marbury to the Trojan 11.
Three plays could only gain a net of four yards, and Jonathan
Cooper was called in to attempt a 25 yard field goal. The
kick was very low, never getting more than 15 feet off the ground,
but hit hard enough to make it through the uprights cutting the
Saint James lead to 4, at 7 - 3, late in the first quarter.
Sterling Jones fielded a short kickoff and returned it to the
Trojan 39. Barkley ran for six yards on the last play of the
first quarter, After a defensive penalty, Barkley
caught a screen pass for eight yards but was injured on the play
and saw limited action the remainder of the game. Making his
first appearance in the 2015 Trojan varsity backfield was Tony
Amerson. His 11 yard gain on first down was bolstered by a
late hit penalty. Two plays later, Wes Cherry caught a 17
yard pass from Collier giving Saint James first down on the
Bulldog 4. On the next play, Amerson carried in for his
first career Trojan varsity touchdown and Taylor's extra point
gave the Trojans a 14 - 3 lead early in the second quarter.
A pooch kickoff was muffed by a Marbury receiver and Trojan
Chandler Armagost pounced on the loose ball, giving Saint James
immediate and fine field position at the Marbury 26.
However, Saint James could only gain two yards on the next three
plays and Taylor was called in to attempt what would have been a
career long 41 yard field goal. His kick was plenty long
enough, but drifted wide right, and the Bulldogs remained within
11 points. Marbury promptly picked up a first down on
yet another Wilkes to Wilkes connection, but several plays later
the ball was knocked loose from a just about ready to throw Wilkes
and Wes Cherry picked up the ball at the Marbury 17 and quickly
ran it into the endzone for a defensive touchdown. The
Taylor extra point gave Saint James a quick 21 - 3 lead with still
a large chunk of the second quarter clock remaining.
After two incomplete Marbury passes to start the next drive, the
third pass was completed. However, unfortunately for
Marbury, it was completed to Trojan Stephen Sadie who ran it back
all the way to the Marbury 19. Two consecutive carries by
Amerson for 5 and 14 yards had Saint James adding more points to
the scoreboard with their third touchdown in just over four
minutes of game time - a 28 - 3 Saint James lead.
The Bulldogs appeared poised to score after a 39 yard completion
on first down from Wilkes to Quinton Sutton gave the Bulldogs
first down at the Trojan 31, but two plays later senior Ivan
Villageois intercepted a pass in the endzone. thwarting the
Marbury score. After a one yard Amerson run, Collier kept
for the first time all evening and completely surprised the
Bulldog defenders. He wedged through the middle and aimed
for the Trojan sideline and was pushed out of bounds 60 yards
later after by far the longest run of his Saint James
career. From the Marbury 19, Amerson picked up 17 on the
next play and Collier called his own number to gain the final two
yards for another Saint James touchdown, a record tying fourth of
the quarter. Taylor's extra point virtually sealed the game
in the first half as the Trojans were up 35 - 3.
Saint James forced a Bulldog punt, but a blatant block in the back
penalty on the punt return cost Saint James valuable
yardage. After Amerson picked up 24 and 19 yards om his next
two plays, and then Stephen Sadie picking up 14 on the next play,
the Trojans likely could have scored again if needed or desired,
but suddenly the Trojans kicked in to ultra-conserative mode and
felt comfortable with the nearly five touchdown lead going into
halftime.
Marbury punted on their opening drive of the game, and it was
returned nicely by Dozier Dean for 25 yards, but on Saint James'
first play of the half, the ball was stripped from runner Barkley
and recovered by Marbury at the Trojan 28. The previous two
weeks, Saint James had out-taken-away its opponents by an
impressive 9 to 0 margin. Keyshawn Palmer picked up 16 yards
on a first down run, one of the few explosive runs of the night
for Marbury. Several plays later, however, Marbury tossed
another interception - this one to Shaw Woodson - and he returned
it niftily 25 yarda before being tossed out of bounds.
Seniors Caton Oswalt and Greyson Hammock, respectively, each
earned five yard plays for a first down. Barkley, returning
to the game after his early second quarter injury, picked up 17
yards on his first carry of the second half, and several plays
later Amerson picked up his third touchdown of the night on a six
yard carry, and the Taylor extra point would close out the Trojan
scoring at 42.
Marbury, now playing against defensive substitutes, did manage to
score three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to narrow the gap far
more considerably than was the situation at 42 - 3. Wilkes
scored on a quarterback keeper on the third play of the fourth
quarter, but the extra point was missed. The Trojans were
stopped on their next drive, and Marbury used short and mid-range
passes to move down the field, culminating in a fourth down 5 yard
pass from Kevin Wilkes to Deshaun Clark. The extra point was
good, but with a near running clock during the fourth quarter at
1:51 remaining, time was indeed running out on the Bulldogs.
Not so fast! On first down, backup quarterback Matt Garnett
had the ball literally wrestled away from him by defensive lineman
Landyn Blankenship and returned for a 29 yad touchdown. The
Trojans 39 point lead had been cut virtually in half to 20 in less
thn a quarter. However, it would be the last score of the
reqular season as Jin Kim raced for 29 yards on first down to salt
away the clock and hopefully prepare the Trojans for what would be
one of their biggest road playoff wins in history.
