October 2, 2015 HOMECOMING Carlisle
Field Weather: Cloudy, occasionally
misty, cool, breezy Game Temperature:
66 Wind NNE 10 - 20
The Saint James offense was occasionally sloppy as was the weather
on occasion, but the defense dominated - not allowing Headland
across the 50 yard line at all during the game while holding the
Rams to only 53 yards total offense - as the Trojans ended a
Carlisle Field losing streak with a big 26 - 0 shutout Homecoming
win.
The wind was definitely favoring the team traveling towards the
southern endzone, and Headland took advantage for the opening
kickoff, which would be their only kickoff of the entire game, by
booting it into the endzone. The Trojans begam narching up
the field against the wind as Blake Underwood quickly picked up
first downs on 8 and 35 yard carries. Another Underwood run
gave the Trojans first down at the Ram 18, but Saint James
promptly lost 9 yards on first down due to a fumble. Another
short run and two incomplete passes turned the ball over on down
to Headland. A fumble on their third down play forced a with
the wind punt, and Dozier Dean fielded the punt near his own 40
and returned it for the longest punt return of the season, 36
yards to the Headland 23. A face mask penalty gave Saint
James first and goal at the 9 yard line, but four plays later from
the two, Underwood was trapped in the backfield for a loss and
once more the Ram defense had stiffened in the red zone.
The Rams were lucky to recover a first down fumble just inches
outside of their goal line, and they were forced to punt again in
a very quickly moving first quarter. The Trojans took over
on their own 42 and earned the wind advantage of the second
quarter one play later. Connor Collier ran for nine yards,
and then completed a pass to Stephen Sadie. An 8 yard
Collier run on the next play set up yet another first down, and
two plays later, Collier tossed a sideline pass to a wide open
Underwood who caught it and ran through three potential defenders
into the endzone for his first receiving touchdown of the season
and the first score of the night. McKay Taylor's extra point
gave Saint James a 7 - 0 lead less than four minutes into the
second quarter.
Two consecutive negative running plays and an incomplete pass
forced yet another Headland punt, this time into the wind.
On first down, Collier called vertually the same play as the
touchdown, and Underwood romped for 27 yards down to the Ram
8. Saint James drove as far as the 1 yard line, but another
fine defensive play forced a four yard loss and Taylor was called
on to convert a 22 yard field goak, which he did, and Saint James'
lead was up to 10 late in the second quarter.
After a Trojan endzone kickoff, the Rams were finally able to
convert a first down on a nifty 23 yard pass from Preston Hancock
to Paxton McCoy, but fourth down only showed the Rams at their own
46 yard line, which would be the deepest attempt to reach Trojan
territory all evening. A short punt rolled dead at the
Trojan 34 with 1:41 remaining until halftime. Two midrange
pass completions surrounding a sack left the Trojans with fourth
down and 2 which Collier converted on a scramble keeper for 19
yards. Dozier Dean caught a 20 yard bullet from Collier on
the next play, and that set up Wes Cherry in the far corner of the
southeast endzone to be on the receiving end of a 19 yard
touchdown with 21 seconds remaining on the clock. Taylor's
extra point boosted the score to 17 - 0 and the Trojans, despite a
slow start, enjoyed a comfortable lead as the alumni-laden crowd
was treated to the annual processional and presentation of the
2015 Homecoming Queen, Lauren Talkington.
An endzone kickoff by Saint James and another short into the wind
punt gave the Trojans great field position at the Ram 43.
However, after a first down on yet another Collier keeper, a
holding penalty and a pair of sacks thwarted the possession as a
steady heavy mist began to fall over Carlisle Field and chased
some of the revelers to shelter. The Rams picked up their
first rushing first down on the next drive, but on the following
play a Hancock pass was overthrown and intercepted by Ivan
Villagrois at the Ram 36. Seven consecutive carries by
Underwood led to a fourth down at the Headland 9, and once again
Taylor was called in to convert his second field goal of the game,
a 26 yarder, which he did, and the Trojans were up by 20 with just
over a quarter remaining.
The mist lightened somewhat as the third quarter came to an end
and the final Trojan scoring drive began. Christian Barkley
was the featured back on this drive. His 11 yard run and a
late hit out of bounds penalty was followed up two plays by
another pair of 11 yard runs. From the five, it took Barkley
two plays, but he cashed in for his first career Trojan touchdown
from the 3 yard line. The extra point failed, but Saint
James had taken control at 26 - 0.
Both teams cleared the benches from thereon out and traded
possessions on the muddy field with no one seriously threatening
to score again, amd the Trojans re-evened their season record at 3
- 3 while holding onto Regional second place at 3 - 1 in
anticipation of a 35 minute drive down Vaughn Road to Union
Springs where Region foe Bullock County would be next on the
docket.
