Saint James wasted several early opportunities for touchdowns, but
held Straughn out of the endzone every possession except one,
coming from behind with a 76 yard drive eating up valuable fourth
quarter clock as the Trojans defeated the visiting # 3 ranked
Tigers 10 - 7 in a huge region win to start the season.
The Trojans benefited from an out of bounds kickoff to start the
game. Jonathan Robinson ran for the first 12 of his 165
total yards on the first play, and four plays later the Trojans
converted a fourth down on a 17 yard Robinson run. Atchison
Hubbard caught a 13 yard pass from Connor Collier to move the ball
down to the Tiger 14, but the drive stalled and Coleman Taylor was
called in to convert his first made field goal of the season, and
Saint James was up 3 - 0 midway through the first quarter.
Straughn earned one first down on a 16 yard pass play, but was
forced to punt short of midfield. The Trojans moved down the
field again methodically, primarily on the legs of Robinson, but
were stopped deep in Straughn territory once more. Taylor
attempted another field goal on the fourth play of the second
quarter, but a bad snap led to a bad kick from 37 yards out and
Straughn regained possession. Tailback Daryl George and
quarterback Rollin Kinsaul, the only ball carriers for the Tigers
the entire evening except for three plays, steadily pushed into
Trojan territory. On second down from the Saint James 23,
Kinsaul pitched back to an invisible man and was lucky to fall on
the wayward toss back at the 30. However, on the next play,
George was hit and the ball was jarred loose to be fallen upon by
Jalen Harris at the Trojan 32.
A penalty slowed the Trojans, but a punt by M.J. Melendez pinned
Straughn back at its own 17 yard line. After an immediate
first down, Straughn punted and Coleman Taylor returned the ball
all the way to the Tiger 42. However, a rather late and
dubious block in the back call on the return negated a significant
chunk of the return yardage. On the next play, the ball was
knocked loose from Dozier Dean on the near sidelines and Straughn
recovered in Saint James territory with just under two minutes
remaining in the half. Kinsaul and George each piled
up double digit yardage on runs to move the ball down to the
Trojan 15 with 40 seconds remaining. After an incomplete
pass, an endzone attempt into coverage was picked off by Reid
Woodson, his third takeaway in the first two games of the season,
and his runback to the 37 yard line quickly switched the
momentum. Two running plays picked up 29 yards before
halftime, but the score remained 3 - 0 as the second quarter clock
expired.
Straughn finally completed a drive to open the third
quarter. An encroachment penalty gave the Tigers their
initial first down, and several plays later Kinsaul demonstrated
his savvy with a 23 yard scramble, breaking several tackles, down
to the Trojan 9 yard line. This time, Saint James could not
hold as Kinsaul carried for four on first down and George the
final five for the first touchdown of the game. C.J.
Philpott's extra point gave the Tigers a 7 - 3 lead and the Trojan
crowd could not help but compare the feeling to several games in
the 2013 season where halftime leads and advantages were lost and
the momentum train never stopped for the opponent.
This was not to be the case this evening. McCoy returned the
ensuing kickoff to midfield, and later Robinson returned a punt as
deep as the Straughn 30. However, after the opening drive of
the third quarter, the offenses seemed to stalemate as the teams
traded punts and the Trojans were stopped on downs on their
deepest penetration. A shanked punt by Saint James gave
Straughn excellent field position at the Trojan 37 early in the
fourth quarter for perhaps a game-clinching touchdown.
Another defensive encroachment penalty gave Straughn a first down
at the 27, but on fourth down and 3 George was stopped for a 4
yard loss and Saint James embarked on a 76 yard drive where they
would retake the lead. Collier was lucky to recover a fumble
on the second play of the drive, which nevertheless earned a first
down. Jaylen McCoy picked up 12 yards on the play before the
fourth quarter heat timeout to give Saint James a first down in
Straughn territory. After the timeout came the biggest play
of the evening - a Connor pass down the field to a covered Nolan
Fields. However Fields made the catch and wrestled for a few
extra yards down to the Straughn 17. Robinson picked up 9
yards on first down, and Collier's 4 yard keeper gave Saint James
first and goal at the Tiger 4. It took three plays, but
McCoy cashed in from about two feet outside the endzone for the
Trojans' first touchdown of the game. Taylor nailed the
extra point and with 3½ minutes remaining, the Trojans fans were
going crazy as they were back up by 3 points.
A pooch kickoff was called for to minimize any danger of a long
kick return, and it was fair caught at the Tiger 33. A
Kinsaul sweep earned a first down at the Straughn 48 with exactly
2½ minutes remaining. Three passes netted only three
yards, and after a Tiger timeout, Kinsaul was held to five yards
on fourth down and Saint James regained possession with 1:46
remaining. With Straughn down to a final timeout, one or
certainly two first downs would seal the victory. On first
down, Robinson took a pitch and although coaches and players were
motioning him to stay inbounds, he was carried out by a
Tiger. However, the tackle continued and he was slung to the
ground out of bounds resulting in a personal foul penalty.
The clock did stop, but the 23 combined yards were almost worth
the stoppage. Robinson was stopped for a one yard loss
before Straughn took its final timeout. However, Robinson
picked up 10 while cradling the football on second down, and 12 on
the next play for the first down, and a Collier kneel in the
victory formation led to players and fans alike storming the field
to celebrate one of the biggest victories in Carlisle Field in
seasons.
The win over whom many considered the Region favorite was huge,
but the Trojans immediately began looking forward to the next
opponent, the suddenly resurgent Catholic Knights who had been
bolstered by the transfer of several players from the closed Saint
Jude. However, this night was for celebration as the # 3
Tigers were sent home with their first loss.
