HOMECOMING 2013 Carlisle Field Game Conditions: Clear
Game Temperature: 68 Wind W 5
Frank Moody uses a stiff-arm to thwart a potential Catholic
tackler on one of his 39 carries
as part of his record-throttling 394 yard rushing
performance to end his career
Frank Moody, in his final football appearance at
Saint James, rewrote the single game and season rushing records
as he nearly reached the 400 yard plateau while scoring four
touchdowns, and the Trojan defense pitched in with some timely
plays as Homecoming 2013 was celebrated happily
with a 48 - 10 season-ending victory over neighboring Catholic.
Saint James began the night with an impressive 10 play 80
yard drive. Moody picked up 48 yards on his first two
carries, and his third run was negated by a holding
penalty. His 11 yard run gave the Trojans an early
fourth down and 1 at the Knight 23. Connor Collier
picked up the first down easily by simply carrying the ball
behind the huge offensive line which surely had their best
overall blocking performance of the season. Moody
gained seven more yards on first down, and then Jonathan
Robinson swept for the other 10 and the first score of the
evening. Coleman Taylor kicked the extra point on a
night of revolving placekickers, and Saint James was up 7 -
0 early.
The Trojan defense held Catholic to a three and out on their
opening drive and moved swiftly for their second score on a
four play drive. Moody carried on the last three plays
for 6, 29, and 25 yards for his first of four
touchdowns. Senior Farris Abdullah, in his last
American football game in his Saint James career, added the
extra point and Saint James was up by 14 with still over
four minutes remaining in the first stanza.
Catholic was lucky to retain possession after the ensuing
kickoff when returner Reggie Jackson was drilled by a Saint
James defender and fumbled the ball. Fortunately,
Jackson would return to the game later. However, the
Knights embarked on the first of two consecutive impressive
drives. Quarterback Gaten Armstrong tossed short
passes to an array of receivers to gain ground bit by
bit. The drive stalled over midfield, but James
Sherman's punt hit the heel of a Trojan blocker and was
fallen upon by a Catholic player at the Trojan 10 yard line.
The Knights, however, could only gain three yards on three
plays, and on the second play of the second quarter, Sherman
was called upon to attempt a short 24 yard field goal, which
he converted, and Catholic had trimmed the lead to 14 - 3.
Penalties, especially of the offensive holding variety, were
one of the few glaring negatives the Trojans exhibited in
their victory. One of those holding penalties stifled
the next drive, and after the only Trojan punt of the
evening, Catholic took over on their own 36. Armstrong
took to the air again, connecting on five of his attempts,
three of those to Brett Foxworth. The third catch gave
the Knights a first and goal at the Trojan 5, and on the
next play Robert Smith ran up the middle virtually untouched
for the score. Sherman's extra point had quickly wiped
out the momentum of the two early Saint James scores, and
the lead was down to 14 - 10 midway through the second
quarter.
Moody's running allowed to Trojans to overcome
another holding penalty on their next drive, but a sack of
Collier eventually led to a fourth down attempt which the
Trojans did not convert, and Catholic took over on downs at
their own 32 with under a minute remaining. Smith
picked up 28 yards on first down, moving Catholic almost
into Sherman field goal range, and the Trojans opted for
their final timeout of the first half. The choice was
fortuitous, as on the next play Coleman Taylor intercepted a
deep pass over the middle and returned it down the near
sidelines 51 yards to the Knight 22. Saint James had
28 seconds left to add a score before halftime, but no
timeouts. Jalen Harris hauled in a completion for 18
yards down to the Catholic 4, and after Collier downed the
ball, the Trojans had just enough time for maybe two passes
into the endzone, or one run. Moody took the pitch and
dove just over the goal line for the touchdown.
Coleman Taylor's long streak of consecutive extra points
ended on a wide attempt, but Saint James now had some
breathing room with a 10 point halftime cushion as the crowd
watched Laura Catherine Clark be crowned as the 2013
Homecoming Queen.
Catholic had fine field position after Foxworth returned a
short kickoff to the Knight 45, and Armstrong continued with
his strategy of short passes to move the Knights down the
field again. A nine yard run by Smith gave Catholic
second and less than a yard at the Trojan 15. An
incomplete pass and a two yard loss on another run by Smith
forced the Knights to try another field goal from the wide
side of the field, and Sherman's kick this time was wide
right. Saint James took over on their own 20 and began
a grueling 80 yard drive which required 16 plays and
exhausted most of the third quarter clock. Moody was
responsible for all but 21 of the yards, and even recovered
his own fumble on a rare strip to keep the drive
alive. A 14 yard pass from Collier to Harris gave the
Trojans a first and goal at the Knight 6, and two plays
later Collier again followed his blockers on a keeper up the
middle for a touchdown. Abdullah's extra point gave
Saint James a 27 - 10 lead late in the third quarter, and
whispers of the record book started as Moody had needed 384
yards to tie the all-time single season rushing record at
Saint James, earned by Johnny Redding in the 1985 season
where the Trojans reached the state quarterfinals in the
playoffs. Nor had any Trojan ever rushed for 300 or
more yards in a single game before.
The inspired Saint James defense looked for ways to get the
ball in Moody's hand, and forced a punt on the second play
of the final quarter. Tait Holder, primary blocking
back for Moody most of the season, picked up 9 yards on only
his second carry of the season, before Moody rushed for 12,
37, and 11 more for a touchdown on three consecutive
plays. Abdullah's kick gave Saint James a comfortable
34 - 10 lead. The Knights could not overcome their
only penalty of the evening on their next drive, and after a
dead ball penalty against the Trojans after the punt, they
took over on their own 45. The Trojan radio announcers
realized even if Moody gained all 55 yards on the next
drive, he would indeed be way over 300 yards but would fall
short of the season rushing record. However, almost
magically, two holding penalties on the drive turned the 55
yard drive into a 75 yard drive and Moody was either fed
every handoff or took a direct snap. The final carry
of his career was for 21 yards and his fourth touchdown of
the night, wrapping up an amazing 394 yard rushing
performance on 39 carries. Abdullah's extra point
boosted the lead to 41 - 10 with just over five minutes
remaining.
Several plays later, Jonathan Robinson wrapped up the
scoring with a 19 yard interception return for a touchdown -
his second tally of the game, and Abdullah's extra point
gave the Trojans consecutive wins over city opponents to end
perhaps a disappointing 4 - 6 season without a visit to the
playoffs, but a season which will always be remembered
especially by the heart, determination, and hard work of
Frank Moody and his offensive cohorts.
