October 11, 2013. Carlisle Field. Game
Conditions: Mostly clear Game
Temperature: 78 Wind: none
The Saint James defense was stout in the first half, holding a
conservative Beauregard offense to 35 yards, and Frank Moody
became the first Trojan in six seasons to break the 200 rushing
yard barrier, but the Hornets made enough big plays in the second
half to withstand any potential threat to their lead as the
Trojans fell at home on Senior Night 2013 by a 28 - 21 margin.
Saint James won the opening coin toss and elected to receive, but
both teams were stopped on three and outs on their opening
drives. Beauregard pinned the Trojans back at their own 10
yard line. However, Frank Moody, who carried for a career
high 217 yards, the fifth highest total in school history, broke
loose on a 51 yard carry on the first play of the second
drive. Moody, Connor Collier, and Jonathan Robinson moved
down the field, all on the ground, and six plays later, Moody
carried in from 12 yards out for the first score of the
game. Coleman Taylor continued his streak of consecutive
extra points, and Saint James was up 7 - 0 in the first quarter.
Not for very long. On the ensuing kickoff, Daquavious
Collins fielded the ball at his own 4 yard line and a gaping hole
formed on the near sidelines which he powered through. Tait
Holder, who was on the opposite side of the field, almost had
enough speed to run him down late, but Collins ran untouched for a
96 yard kickoff return, the second longest by an opponent in Saint
James history. The extra point snap was bad, and even though
the holder Timothy Senn tried, he was unable to reach the endzone
on an impromptu two point conversion, so the Trojans retained a
one point lead.
Saint James moved the ball again on their next drive on a 16 yard
run by Moody and a 24 yard catch and run by Jalen Harris which was
aided by a penalty for a second sideline warning. Moody and
Jaylon McCoy were lining up in a "Wildcat" formation as often or
moreso as Connor Collier was lining up in standard quarterback
situations either under center or in "shotgun". However, a
snap over the head of McCoy led to a 24 yard loss and eventually a
Trojan punt. The Hornets, which only netted three yards of
offense in the first quarter while running only four scrimmage
plays, finally picked up their initial first down on the second
play of the second quarter. However, they again could not
reach Trojan territory and punted to continue a quickly moving
game. Saint James moved down as far as the Hornet 20 on
their next drive, but a pass on a fake field goal attempt went
incomplete and the Trojans turned the ball over on downs.
Two quick passes from Walker Meadows to Tykwane Miniefield gave
the Hornets their first possession inside Trojan territory, and on
the next play, almost identical to the previous two, Meadows
appeared to have connected with Miniefield on a 49 yard touchdown
catch and run down the middle of the field, but an ineligible
receiver penalty negated the score. A sack several plays
later forced another punt at the end of the first half.
Beauregard benefited from good field position to start the third
quarter after a nice return of a squib kickoff. Three plays
later, Meadows and Miniefield connected again, with Miniefield
shaking off his defender as he caught the ball around the 20 yard
line and avoiding other defenders as he raced into the endzone on
a 54 yard scoring play. Collins just snuck into the far
corner of the endzone on an intentional two point conversion, and
the Hornets had their first lead at 14 - 7 early in the second
half.
Saint James was forced to punt, and a return by Mike McDonald gave
Beauregard excellent field position to start at the Trojan
24. However, Meadows could not complete a fourth down pass
to the endzone which was nicely broken up by Jonathan Robinson,
and the Trojans took over on downs at their 25. Harris
earned one first down on a catch of 11 yards, but on the next play
a Collier pass was intercepted by Ryan Johnson on what would be
the only turnover of the game, and he was stopped just short of a
49 yard interception return for a touchdown as he was forced out
of bounds at the 4 yard line. A penalty set the ball back to
the 9, but four consecutive runs, the last by Collins, earned just
enough yardage for a Hornet score. Thomas Scott kicked the
extra point, and the Hornets had stretched their lead to 14.
Jaylen McCoy had perhaps the best kickoff return of the season to
date for the Trojans as he returned 40 yards to the Trojan 48, and
the Wildcat tandem of McCoy and Moody rushed down the field.
Moody overcame a penalty with a 37 yard run down to the Beauregard
4, and he scored on the next play. Taylor's extra point once
more cut the Hornet lead to 7, 21 - 14, with still time remaining
in the third quarter. A line drive kickoff was snatched by
upman Timothy Senn at the 47 yard line, and Nykel Mitchell was
given handoffs on eight consecutive plays - the last of which went
for seven yards and Beauregard's final scoring play. The
extra point gave the Hornets their 14 point lead back with still
11 minutes remaining on the clock.
Moody picked up a first down on a 17 yard carry, but the Trojans
were forced to punt again. Three different penalties all but
wiped out Beauregard's next drive, but the running plays were
using up valuable clock time. Saint James regained
possession on the Hornet 49 and drove downfield. McCoy
converted a fourth down play and added an 18 yard run on the
drive. From the 5, Collier returned as quarterback intending
to pass, but he saw an opening off the left side of the line and
darted into the endzone for a Trojan touchdown. The extra
point cut the lead to 7once more, but only about 2½ minutes
remained in the game. Saint James opted for an onside kick,
but Farris Abdullah's bouncer was fielded by the sure handed Senn
once more. Beauregard eeked out one first down and forced
the Trojans to use all of their remaining timeouts. A quick
kick by Meadows on fourth down traveled into the endzone giving
Saint James one more possession, but with only 8 seconds and 80
yards to travel, the Trojans could not create magic of that
magnitude and had only a well played game to show for their
improving effort at the conclusion of a brutal three game home
streak.
