Saint James statistically dominated
the first half in yardage, first downs, and time of possession,
but a muffed punt return, an interception, and a blocked punt
helped lead to a pair of Trinity third quarter touchdowns, as the
Wildcats cruised to their eighth straight victory over the Trojans
with a 21 - 7 victory at Carlisle Field.
In a game which featured 14 punts, both defenses shined. The
first four possession of the game featured a total of one first
down on a 15 yard run by Frank Moody, who once again easily
eclipsed the 100 yard rushing mark for the game. The
Trojans' third possession started on their own 47. Three
carries by Moody and a pass from Connor Collier to Jalen Harris
gave Saint James first down at the Trinity 29. Jonathan
Robinson's fresh legs on three consecutive carries of 12, 8, and 9
yards earned the Trojans the first score of the night.
Coleman Taylor's extra point was good, and Saint James led 7 - 0
late in the first quarter.
After the Wildcats were stopped on their third consecutive three
and out drive, a short Trojan punt switched the field position in
Trinity's favor, and it seemed to be that way for the remainder of
the game. Trinity finally picked up their initial first down
on a Griffin Slater to Robert Adams pass, but the Trojans forced
another punt. From their own 24, Saint James earned three
first downs on the legs of Moody and Robinson, but eventually
turned the ball over on downs at the Trinity 35. On first
down, a short pass completion was aided by a crucial personal foul
penalty which seemed to fire up the Wildcats. A pass
reception by Hunter Johnson advanced the ball to the Trojan 32,
and three plays later, Johnson again was the recipient of a catch
and run where he broke several potential tacklers before sneaking
into the endzone for the first Trinity touchdown. Jake
Engle's extra point tied the score at 7 late in the second
quarter.
Saint James picked up several first downs before being forced to
punt, and Trinity had reached the Trojan 45 before Jake Sharp
ended a potential Wildcat threat with an interception just seconds
before halftime, and the teams would regroup after a first half
with an even score. However, the Trojans had an 8 minute
advantage in time of possession while earning 193 yards (169
rushing) to the Wildcats' 107 (only 22 rushing).
The Trojans were offside on the opening kickoff which proved to be
a bad omen of things to come in the third quarter. The
Trojan defense stopped the Wildcats on yet another three and out,
but the ensuing punt was muffed and recovered by Trinity at the
Trojan 27. Ben Jones kept for 7 yards and Chris Hynniman's
strong run of 19 yards came up just short of the endzone.
Hynniman scored on the next play, but the extra point attempt was
deflected and came up short, leaving Trinity with only a 13 - 7
lead early in the third quarter.
Robinson, Moody, and Jaylen McCoy earned moderate gains on
consecutive rushes to push the Trojans into Trinity
territory. However, a Collier pass was intercepted by Trace
Johnston and returned just short of midfield giving the Wildcats
good field position once more. Trinity drove as far as the
Saint James 16, but came up one yard short on a fourth down and
two attempt, turning the ball back over to the Trojans albeit deep
in their own territory. Moody picked up 21 yards on a strong
first down carry giving Saint James some breathing room, but the
drive stalled and on fourth down a punt attempt was blocked by
Hudson Hufham and picked up by Pat Williams who returned it to the
Trojan 11. Hynniman was stopped for no gain on consecutive
carries, but on third down on a play which almost looked like a
set up in the middle of the field for a potential field goal
attempt, Hynniman found running room off of the right tackle and
swerved between potential tacklers into the endzone for an 11 yard
score. A two point conversion pass from Ben Jones to Sasser
was successful, cancelling out the missed extra point attempt, and
Trinity was up by 14 very late in a disastrous third quarter for
the Trojans which included the muffed punt return, an intercepted
pass, and the key blocked punt which set up what would be the
final score of the game.
The Trojans had no choice but to play catchup primarily with the
passing game in the final quarter. Fortunately, the defense
did not allow Trinity a first down the entire quarter (as they had
not in the opening quarter), but field position always seemed to
be in the Wildcats' favor. A fabulous catch among triple
coverage by Jalen Harris gave the Trojans a first down in Trinity
territory, but an interception on the next play by Robert Adams
ended that threat. Trinity's Engle would attempt a 46 yard
field goal, which would have tied an opponent's record for yardage
against Saint James, but the kick drifted wide left. The
Trojans were forced to punt from deep in their own territory, but
got the ball back with just over two minutes remaining at their
own 3. Moody picked up several first downs on nice catch and
run plays, but there was simply too much yardage and too little
time to accomplish much as the clock expired just after reaching
Trinity territory, and the Wildcats bagged their eighth
consecutive win over a hard fighting Trojan sqaud in the first of
a three game homestand against very strong competition.
