Game Conditions: Mostly Clear Game
Temperature: 67 Wind: negligible
Frank Moody, just after being named
Montgomery Quarterback Club Private School Player
of the Week the previous week, scored four rushing touchdowns as he ran for nearly 140 yards to
lead the Trojans to a regular season
ending victory over the neighboring
Catholic Knights 42 - 14.
Saint James
started out sluggishly as a bouncing shotgun snap to
quarterback C.J. Duncan was almost turned
into a long gain on a busted play, but a majority of the yardage was
negated on a block in the back
penalty. Catholic had good field
position near midfield after the ensuing
punt, but lost three yards on their possession and punted
back to the Trojans. From their
own 32, Saint James drove 68 yards for
the first score of the evening.
Moody picked up a
total of 10 yards on two running
plays, and then Duncan tossed his only two pass
completions of the night on the same
called play to Jalen Harris,
for 15 and 26 yards
respectively.
Perhaps looking for the
same call on the next
play, Moody took the
handoff and rushed 17
yards into
the endzone for the
first score of the
game. Matthew
Alter's extra point,
the first of six
consecutive and the
fourth time he had
accomplished that
feat during the
season, gave Saint
James a 7 - 0
lead midway
through the first
quarter.
After
an endzone
kickoff, one of
many on this
brisk evening
despite minimal
wind, Catholic
kept possession
for five plays
before Robert
Smith's fumble
was recovered by
Chase Ritter at
the Knight
27. On
third down and 9,
Duncan rushed
for 7 yards
but a late hit
penalty kept
the drive
alive for
Saint
James.
Hunter Smith
picked up
seven yards on
his only carry
of the night
down to the
Knight two,
and Moody
cashed in on
the next
play for his
second
touchdown and
the Trojans
were up 14 - 0
still in the
first quarter.
The
Knights were
benefit of 30
gift yards by
the Trojans to
begin the
second
quarter, half
on a third down
pass
interference penalty,
and the other
half two plays
later on a
late hit
penalty which
some judged to
be a makeup
for the earlier
late hit
penalty on the
other
side.
However, after
a 7 yard loss,
a no gain
rush, and an
18 yard
quarterback
sack by
Ritter, Catholic
was pushed
almost all the
way back to
midfield
and forced to
punt
again. The
frustration
from the
penalties and
the excitement
of the huge
sack seemed to
rally the
Trojans as
they drove 73
yards
in 5
plays on the
next
drive.
Moody broke
off a 21 yard
run on the
first play,
and then
Duncan on a
keeper was
into the
Knight
secondary on
the
next. He
slipped trying
to make a cut,
and was
whistled down
after a 12
yard gain
although no
one was sure
his knee had
actually touched ground.
Two plays
later,
however, he
would not be
denied
as he weaved
his way through
potential
tackler after
tackler for a
44 yard jaunt
into the
endzone.
Alter's kick
gave the
Trojans a 21 -
0 lead midway
through the
second
quarter.
Neither team
seriously
threatened to
score in their
remaining
first half
possessions.
Tempers
were flaring
early in the
third
quarter.
The Knights
were stopped
on three
plays after
yet another
endzone
kickoff.
Offsetting
personal foul
penalties
negated a
first
attempt at a
punt. On
the next try,
Trojan
returner
Walker Woodson was
drilled as he
was receiving
the
high
punt. He
somehow
managed to
hold on to the
ball despite
his helmet
being knocked
off, and a
personal foul
penalty was
assessed for a
combination of
the hit and a
violation of
the kick catch
rule.
This further
inspired the
Trojans as two
plays later,
Jonathan Robinson
scored on a
play similar
to Duncan's
earlier carry
from 33 yards
out. The
extra point
gave Saint James
a comfortable
28 - 0 lead
early in the
third period.
As Trojan
defensive
substitutes
began
filtering into
the lineup,
the Knights embarked
on their best
drive of the
evening.
They were
lucky to
recover their
own fumble on
the first play
of the drive,
a play where
starting
quarterback
Michael Tyner
was injured
and had to
leave the game
for several
minutes.
Backup Gaten
Armstrong
completed
several passes
to Robert
Smith and
Brent Foxworth.
Saint
James called a
timeout
sensing a renewed
vigor in
Catholic.
It continued
as Smith
rushed for a
particularly
difficult
seven yards on
the next play,
but a dead
ball
unsportsmanlike
conduct
penalty erased
the gain and
then
some.
Arthur Frawley
sacked
Armstrong on
the next play
for a 13 yard
loss and it
appeared
Saint
James had
regained its
intensity.
However, on
the next play,
a third down and
31, a simple
handoff to
Smith turned
into a 78 yard
sprint
where he
outran surprised
Trojan
defenders for
the first
Knight score
of the
evening.
James Sherman's
extra point
cut the lead
to 28 - 7 and
gave the
Knight fans
something
finally to cheer.
Sensing
a potential onside
kick, a line
drive kickoff
was nicely
speared by
Hunter Smith
and returned
to the Trojan
39.
Moody gained
11 yards on a
pair of plays,
and another
dead ball
unsportsmanlike
conduct
penalty gave
Saint James 15
more free
yards.
Robinson
picked up 22
yards on the
next play down
to the Knight
13, and
several plays
later Moody
carried in
from the 3 for
his third
touchdown,
boosting the
Trojan lead
back up to
four scores.
Moody,
with 99 yards
rushing,
needed one
more carry to
break the 100
yard barrier,
and on the
next Trojan
possession did
so in a big
way as he took
a handoff and
ran off right
tackle
untouched for
38 yards and a
touchdown on
the final play
for most of
the Trojan
starters.
Alter's extra
point gave
Saint James a
42 -
7 lead early
in the fourth
quarter.
Chase Collins
won
a duel and
intercepted a
deep pass on
Catholic's
next
possession,
but a penalty
stalled the
drive and the
Trojans punted
back to the
Knights.
Against
second and
third string
defenders,
Catholic
drove 54
yards with
Tyner
tossing a 14
yard touchdown
pass to
Foxworth in
the last
minute of the
game to wrap
up the scoring.
Saint James
wrapped up a
winning record
with its sixth
win of the
season and
looked toward
the southwest
with a playoff
journey
beginning the
following
Friday.
