October 12, 2012 Richard L. Brown Field, Beauregard. Game Conditions: Mostly
clear Game Temperature: 74
Winds: light and variable
For the second week in a row, Saint James gave up consecutive
touchdowns (this time four) to start the game while failing to
score themselves, and again they could not recover from the early
onslaught as the Beauregard Hornets celebrated their Homecoming
with a 41 - 7 defeat of the Trojans.
Despite earning decent field position to start the game, Saint
James could gain no yardage on its first possession and punted,
giving the Hornets a first down on their own 39. Nine plays
later, they were in the endzone. David Winslet completed a
22 yard pass to Trey Collins on the first play, and later a
Collins run gave Beauregard a first and goal at the Trojan
9. Although they picked up eight yards on first down, it
took all four plays for the Hornets to stuff it into the endzone
as Courtney Collins took the handoff on his initial carry of the
game for the final yard and the touchdown. Jason Clark
converted the first of his five attempted extra points and
Beauregard was up 7 - 0 less than 5 minutes into the game.
After another fine kickoff return by Walker Woodson, and a 23 yard
gain on a reverse play to William Olsey, the Trojans were at the
Hornet 40. After a 5 yard run by Frank Moody, a 10 yard pass
completion was nullified by a holding penalty which seemed to
throttle down any momentum the Trojans were hoping to build.
Several plays later, C.J. Duncan was tackled on a fake punt
attempt, turning the ball back over to Beauregard. On first
down, Winslet broke loose on a keeper and was tackled inside the
one yard line saving a 58 yard touchdown scamper. After a
loss on the first play, Trey Collins scored on second down and
Clark's extra point boosted the lead to 14 with over four minutes
remaining in the first quarter.
A short punt to conclude the next Trojan drive gave the Hornets a
short field as they took over possession at the Saint James
36. Zach Walls cut the distance in half by hauling in a 19
yard pass on first down, and four plays later Winslet threw the
first of his three touchdown passes, the first a six yarder to
Davonte Echols. Clark's extra point gave the Hornets a 21 -
0 lead with still 22 seconds left in the opening quarter.
As the second quarter began, Saint James was moving the ball in
earnest, primarily due to a 47 yard pass from Duncan to Jake
Farmer. An 11 yard reception by Hunter Smith and a 7 yard
run by Moody gave the Trojans first down at the Hornet 18.
However, the Beauregard defense stiffened, and Woodson was stopped
for no gain at the Hornet 11. From there, Beauregard used up
much of the second quarter clock and drove 89 yards for another
score, mostly on the arm of Winslet. A dubious personal foul
penalty after a catch and run moved the ball to the Trojan 13, and
three plays later Winslet, who completed passes to seven different
receivers, threw his second touchdown pass to Jeb Spence and
Beauregard was in control at 28 - 0. After another Saint
James punt, the Hornets were primed for a fifth touchdown drive
before halftime. However, an unsportsmanlike penalty allowed
the Trojans to finally stop a Hornet drive, and the resulting punt
was downed at the Saint James 17 with less than two minutes
remaining until halftime.
After a 13 yard run by Woodson gave Saint James a first down at
their own 32, they called a timeout with 25 seconds
remaining. William Olsey's pass reception of 18 yards led to
another timeout. From there, Duncan was forced back behind
his own 40 yard line, but launched a high deep pass which was
caught by Jake Farmer who had been fighting off a Hornet defender
in the opposing endzone for a touchdown and the Saint James
sideline finally had reason to cheer. Matthew Alter's extra
point cut the lead to 28 - 7 and gave Saint James something
positive going into halftime, something they had lacked the
previous week.
Unusually long performances by the Saint James band and the
Beauregard homecoming court appeared to have lessened the
momentum, but it was quickly regained by Saint James as a bouncy
kickoff after the five yard penalty was gathered in by a Hornet
before the Trojan defense 'swarmed' (a particularly overused word
of the Beauregard public address announcer) and stopped the
returner inside the 20 yard line. The clock failed to start
on the kickoff which seemed insignificant at the time, but the
next play would at least draw some attention to the minor
error. Whatever momentum Saint James had rallied vanished on
the next play as Winslet found Trey Collins open about 15 yards
downfield on a pass reception down the near sideline, and he
pulled away from pursuing Trojans for an 82 yard score on the
first scrimmage play of the second half. Clark missed the
extra point, but the Hornets were up safely 34 - 7. The
clock issue was noted when the remaining time after a kickoff
return and an 82 yard catch and run was, 11:51 - only nine seconds
had elapsed.
The Trojans finally maintained some consistency on offense.
After an offensive block in the back penalty and a defensive dead
ball personal foul on the same play, Duncan took off on one of his
longest carries of the year, luring the defense to the left side
of the field as he reversed and ran 50 yards down the opposite
side to the Hornet 20. Four plays later on fourth and
literally an inch, Duncan converted a first down to the Beauregard
7. However, after a sack on first down and two no-gain
plays, Alter was called in to attempt a 27 yard field goal.
A low bouncy snap was somehow gathered in by Duncan, but the kick
was short and popped up like a pooch kickoff. Reggie Collier
caught the ball at his own 3 yard line and took off, looking as if
he was going to get a 97 yard touchdown on a field goal
return. However, he was caught at midfield and dropped at
the Saint James 48.
The game had been turnover free until this point, but a flurry of
turnovers plagued the remainder of the third quarter. Saint
James was the welcome recipient of the first turnover as Duncan
intercepted what would have been a touchdown reception at the 5
and returned it all the way to the Trojan 41. Three plays
later, a Woodson run of 15 yards gave Saint James a first down at
the Hornet 38. Then, a bizarre play occurred. A
handoff was fumbled and picked up after several bounces by a
Hornet defender. He ran about 7 yards before the ball was
knocked out again and briefly possessed by a Saint James
lineman. It was then knocked out again toward the Hornet
sidelines where it was picked up by Charles Motley at the 48 yard
line and he avoided early traffic to race 52 yards for a recovery
of a fumble recovery touchdown - or a fumble advance after a pair
of recoveries. Thomas Scott was called in to attempt the
extra point, which he did, and with still nearly 15 minutes
remaining of game time, 41 - 7 would be the final score.
Any thought of a quick Trojan score was wiped out as Saint James
fumbled on its next scrimmage play after a pass reception.
By now, Beauregard was playing reserves, and it appeared the fresh
legs of Nykel Mitchell had run for a 25 yard touchdown, but a
holding penalty negated the score. An incomplete pass on
fourth down at the Trojan 15 gave the ball back to Saint James to
start the fourth quarter, but the teams traded punts as neither
side could earn a first down until Beauregard picked up two on a
clock eating drive to end the game inside two minutes
remaining. With the win, Beauregard clinched a home field
playoff berth and looked forward two weeks to their matchup with
Tallassee possibly to decide the region championship, while Saint
James ended a brutal three game road losing streak after a 4 - 0
start and began preparations to face the same Tallassee Tigers at
home to try and wrap up their own playoff berth.
