Jonathan Robinson scored three touchdowns as part of his first
100+ yard career rushing game, and C.J. Duncan threw two touchdown
passes and ran 63 yards for another score as the Trojans started
the season with their fourth straight win by defeating the
visiting Bullock County Hornets 48 - 8.
Saint James won the opening coin toss and elected to receive, as
Coach Perry kept his promise his team wanted the ball first and
would not defer a choice. After what appeared to be an
onside kick was recovered by the Trojans' Coleman Adams at the 44,
and a 34 yard completion on the first scrimmage play from C.J.
Duncan to William Olsey, Saint James appeared to be in
business. However, on the next play the ball was knocked
loose from Walker Woodson and after a discussion among the
officials which lasted well over a minute, the ball was awarded to
Bullock County.
The Hornets were lucky to recover their own fumble on second down,
but an eight yard loss on third down resulted in a pressured punt
which was returned by Robinson to the Bullock County 23.
Woodson carried for 5 yards, and Robinson's 15 yard burst moved
the ball down to the 3. An illegal substitution penalty
nudged the ball forward half the distance, and the Robinson
carried in on the next play, officially from the 2, for the first
touchdown of the game. For the third time in four games this
season, Matthew Alter converted his first of six consecutive extra
points, and Saint James was up 7 - 0 just over three minutes into
the game.
The Hornets, on the strength of both a 34 yard run and a 34 yard
pass reception by Christopher Manuel, quickly advanced the ball to
the Trojan 8. However, on the next play the ball was knocked
loose and Kane Davenport picked up the loose ball and returned it
out to the 8 thwarting a potential early score by Bullock
County. Saint James drove to midfield, and appeared to have
scored on a razzle dazzle play where Duncan took a reverse pitch
and threw 41 yards to a wide open William Olsey for a
touchdown. However, an ineligible receiver penalty on the
play negated the score, and Duncan was later forced to punt.
A Hornet holding penalty wiped out a nice carry, and on fourth
down the Trojan punt block was called for. The punt was not
blocked, but was deflected upwards and bounced forward for only a
net gain of five yards. From the Bullock County 18, Walker
Woodson was given the ball two consecutive plays for gains of 8
and 10 yards, the second resulting in a touchdown. Alter's
kick gave the Trojans a two touchdown lead with only five seconds
remaining in the first quarter. An 11 yard run on the
Hornets' next drive gave them some momentum, but it was quickly
cancelled out by a sack, an incomplete pass on a trick play which
looked like two forward passes on the same play, and a
penalty. Another short punt gave Saint James good position
at the Hornet 45, and on this drive Robinson was given two carries
- the first a three yarder and the second an amazing 42 yard weave
and work through the middle of the Bullock County secondary and
beyond for a touchdown. Alter's extra point boosted the lead
to 21 early in the second quarter.
A great kickoff and similar coverage pinned Bullock County in
deep, and a Robinson punt return gave Saint James the ball at the
Hornet 38. Woodson carried for 13 on first down, and 10 on
the next play. However, after he and several other Trojans
were roughed up after the play was dead, it was the Trojan
retaliator who was caught by an official and assessed an
unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. However, from the 30,
Duncan carried for 5 and then found Olsey ending a nice post
pattern in the endzone on a toss which was just missed by a
crossing defender but caught for a touchdown. The extra
point gave Saint James a four touchdown lead.
The Hornets picked up 43 yards on a carry by Devante Sullen on
their next drive, and a horsecollar tackle was needed to prevent a
touchdown, so 15 more yards were added. Three incomplete
passes netted no yardage obviously, and a mere three yard run on
fourth down gave the ball back to Saint James. Runs by
Hunter Smith and Robinson gained a total of 10 yards, and then
Duncan called his own number around left end as he avoided the
first line of tacklers and managed to tiptoe inbounds along the
Trojan sidelines to conclude a 63 yard touchdown run for a score
and a 35 point lead. A Bullock County fumble two plays
after the ensuing kickoff gave Saint James one last chance to
score before halftime, and they did so as Duncan found a wide open
Jake Farmer in the near corner of the endzone for his first
careet touchdown catch, and once again the Trojans were in full
control at halftime with a 42 - 0 lead.
For the first time in Saint James history, a game by coaches'
mutual agreement was shortened at halftime. Instead of a
continuously running clock, both head coaches agreed on six minute
quarters in the second half. Bullock County held the ball
most of the six minute third quarter, but an endzone punt gave the
ball back to Saint James. Several plays later, a Duncan punt
was muffed by the Hornet receiver and Kane Davenport, who had
recovered the crucial first down fumble, did so again in the
kicking department. Two runs by Robinson of 6 yards and 27
yards gave the Trojans 6 more points to wrap up the scoring.
Bullock County added a late touchdown against the second string
Trojan defenders as Mack found Kentavious Jenkins open deep for a
45 yard pitch and catch touchdown. Mack wrapped up the
night's scoring by adding his own two points on a quarterback
sweeper keeper, but it would be the Trojans who would rack up 48
points for the second consecutive week as they prepared for the
toughest part of the schedule beginning with a visit "inside the
bypass" to face off against rival Trinity.
