Saint James celebrated its 200th all-time varsity football victory
as the Trojans traveled to Henry County for the second consecutive
year and dominated the young homestanding Headland Rams,
this time by a score of 48 - 6.
The game was quite similar to the previous year's tilt in Headland
as Saint James built up a big lead by the beginning of the third
quarter and allowed substitute players ample time on both sides of
the ball to participate. The Trojans downed a grounded kick
at their own 44 and marched 56 yards in eight plays on their
opening drive. All plays were rushes, and with the exception
of a 30 yard keeper by quarterback C.J. Duncan to convert the
initial first down, every other carry was by Walker Woodson, who
set a career high in carries with 15. His seventh carry of
the game went for a yard and the opening touchdown, and Matthew
Alter converted the first of six consecutive extra points for the
second time this season to give Saint James an early 7 - 0 lead.
After an endzone kick, Headland did manage one first down on their
opening drive, but a punt was returned by Jonathan Robinson 31
yards to the Ram 32. William Olsey caught a 17 yard pass on
first down, one of only five passes the Trojans attempted all
evening, to move the ball down to the Headland 15. From
there, Woodson and Duncan took over on the ground again,
overcoming a penalty, to push the ball into the endzone
again. Woodson scored from two yards out and the extra point
gave the Trojans a 14 point lead with more than 4 minutes
remaining in the opening quarter.
The Rams moved the ball a bit on several pass completions by
starting quarterback Octavious Washington and a 20 yard carry by
Chase Richburg, but on the next play Richburg fumbled a handoff
and it was recovered by the Trojans at their own 35. A
holding penalty later led to a punt on the first play of the
second quarter giving the Rams some of their best field position
of the night at their own 49. After a personal foul penalty
gave Headland a first down at the Trojan 21, a huge sack by Chase
Ritter pushed the ball back, and several plays later on a
desperation fourth down attempt, Duncan intercepted his second
pass of the season and returned it 39 yards to the Ram 35.
Several plays later, a defensive holding penalty moved the ball
down to the 10 yard line, and Duncan completed his second pass of
the game to Olsey for a 10 yard touchdown and after the extra
point, Saint James was up by 21 midway through the second quarter.
Both teams traded punts and timeouts trying to earn another chance
to score before halftime, and the Rams had moved the ball as close
as the Trojan 36 before Evan Border picked up a sack on the final
play of the half and, as in the previous year, the Trojans went to
halftime with points on their side and none on the other.
Headland, which had won the opening game coin toss, elected to
defer their choice to the second half and chose to take the ball
to begin the third quarter. However, it would be Saint James
who would score three touchdowns in less than four minutes to take
immediate control of the game if there was any doubt at
halftime. The kickoff return was fumbled and recovered by
Saint James at the Ram 20. Woodson carried for two on first
down, and the Duncan wove through potential tacklers picking up
his first rushing touchdown of the evening from 18 yards
out. Alter's extra point upped the lead to 28 less than a
minute into the third quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, which
was probably headed out of bounds, the receiver touched the ball
before it went out of bounds at the Ram 3. On third down
from the 4, Duncan reeled in his second interception of the
evening and returned it to the Ram 13 where Woodson scored his
final touchdown on the very next play making the score 35 - 0.
Things went from bad to worse for Headland as on the next kickoff,
the ball was muffed and a desperation return lost yardage back to
the Ram 4. Two negative plays pushed the ball back to the
edge of the goal line, and on third down the quarterback, who had
appeared to step on the back line of the endzone, was tackled and
the ball came loose to be fallen upon by Chase Ritter just in the
field of play. He was awarded a touchdown and Alter's extra
point meant the final play of the evening for most of the Trojan
starters on both sides of the ball with still over 8 minutes
remaining in the third quarter and a 42 - 0 Saint James lead.
The Rams finally survived a kickoff return with no disaster, and
actually drove 77 yards, nearly half of their net game output, for
a score. A muffed punt and an offsides penalty on the
Trojans on a fourth down and 3 were the catalysts, and several
plays after a 20 yard run by Richburg, backup quarterback Jonathan
Bradford carried in from five yards for what would be the only
score for Headland as a two point conversion pass attempt failed.
Saint James fumbled again on the next drive as by now both teams
were emptying their benches, but Headland was stopped for a four
yard loss on fourth down and 3 from the Trojan 38. With
Dozier Dean now directing the offense, he, Robinson, and Robert
Lee were called on to mount the ground attack. On the fifth
play of the fourth quarter, Robinson dove in from the one for the
final score of the game, as Coleman Taylor's extra point attempt
was just wide.
The teams traded punts, penalties, and turnovers for the remainder
of the contest, including an interception by Coleman Taylor in
Trojan territory. An on the field ambulance delay for an
injured Ram toned down the exuberance in the fourth quarter.
However, valuable playing minutes were earned by the second and
third stringers as the Trojans cruised to their first 3 - 0 start
since 2001, when they began the season with seven consecutive
wins.
