C.J. Duncan set yet another Trojan passing record with his 36th
career touchdown pass, a 19 yarder to Jalen Thomas, and added
three touchdown runs of his own, including a 46 yarder on a fake
punt, as Saint James shut out the last team which had shut them
out, the Ashford Yellow Jackets, by a 32 - 0 score.
The game could have easily been far more out of hand after the
first half. The Trojan defense shone, holding Ashford to no
first downs and only 3 yards total offense in the first
half. Saint James had the ball for six offensive possessions
in the first half. Touchdowns were scored on three of the
drives, but turnovers ended the other three, including each of the
first two drives.
On the opening drive, Saint James had just crossed midfield on a
nice pass from Duncan to Hunter Smith for 13 yards, but on the
next play Duncan went for broke on a long pass, but it was
wrestled away by a Jacket defender at the 6 yard line.
Ashford, which gained a net of three total yards in the first half
and could not earn a first down, only picked up four yards on
their opening possession and punted away, with a Frank Moody
return to the Jacket 40. However, two plays later, a bobbled
handoff was lost and Ashford regained possession again.
However, they netted a minus four yards to offset the four gained
earlier, and after another punt Saint James took over on their own
39.
Finally the Trojans managed to hold on to the ball for an entire
drive which ate up a large part of the first quarter. Smith
caught another pass for a first down, and William Olsey was a pass
recipient as well. Moody and Walker Woodson shared the
rushing duties as the Trojans moved down to the Jacket 10 on the
last play of the quarter. After changing sides, Duncan
called his own number for the first time in the evening and found
an opening off right tackle for a 10 yard touchdown. Matthew
Alter's extra point gave Saint James a 7 - 0 lead early in the
second quarter.
After an endzone kick, Ashford's Keyon Wilson made his first
appearance of the game, and despite an eight yard gain on first
down, the Jackets had to punt again. After a 7 yard run by
Moody, Duncan and Moody's consecutive 21 yard gains moved the ball
down to the Ashford 5, where Duncan scored a pair of plays
later. Alter's extra point, his eighth consecutive make over
two weeks, doubled the Trojan lead to 14.
A good kickoff return put Ashford at their 41 yard line, but on
the next play they committed their only turnover of the game as
Zachery Moore's pass was snatched by Chase Collins at the Trojan
40. The Trojans were driving again, but Smith was hit hard
after a wide open pass reception down the middle which knocked the
ball loose and again the Jackets benefited from a Saint James
turnover, the third of the first half. A bobbled snap cost
the Jackets 10 yards on third down, and a short punt gave Saint
James another chance to score with just over three minutes
remaining. Duncan's 11 yard run gave the Trojans first down
at the Ashford 19, and two plays later, with defensive lineman
Kenny Thomas lined up in a slot position which completely confused
the defenders, Duncan tossed a historic touchdown pass to a wide
open Jalen Harris over the middle. This touchdown pass,
Duncan's 36th career, broke the old career mark of 35 which had
been set by Brett Gantt in the early 2000s. The extra point
attempt appeared to be good, but was waved off by the
referees. However, despite three tunrovers, Saint James led
by 20 headed into halftime.
Ashford's best drive of the game, as it was, began at the start of
the second half. Wilson picked up 24, 4, 8, and 5 yards on
consecutive runs. A pass play which lost yardage was offset
by a face mask penalty which was incorrectly marked off yardage
wise gave Ashford a first down at the Trojan 22. On fourth
down, still from the 22, a run only picked up one yard and Saint
James took over on downs. Saint James drove into Jacket
territory, where they were faced with a fourth and 2 from the
46. Duncan, lined up as a punter, forcing Ashford to call a
timeout. After the timeout, he lined up again and saw the
defense was not prepared for him to possibly carry the ball.
He took off through the right side of the line, and after 10 yards
of defenders he broke free with only the potential returner,
Wilson, prepared to stop him. Duncan didn't allow the tackle
and ran into the endzone for a 46 yard score, his third touchdown
run of the evening. Alter's extra point gave the Trojans a
27 - 0 lead and it was the end of the night for most of the first
teamers.
On the next drive, Wilson broke away for what would have been a 76
yard touchdown run on a play where he probably ran 120 yards
total. However, there was an obvious illegal shift as the
play developed, and a block in the back further down field would
have negated the score anyway. Several plays later, when the
Jackets could not convert a fourth down and one in the last minute
of the quarter, they appeared to have resigned the possibility of
victory.
Jake Sharp came in as quarterback and primarily on the legs of Zac
Swearingen, Saint James moved the ball as close as the Ashford 7
before Alter was called on for a 25 yard field goal, which he
converted, and Saint James was up 30 - 0 in the fourth
quarter. The teams traded punts, but Alter was called in to
kick what was the only official punt of the evening for the
Trojans. And as he had accomplished the previous week, his
punt from midfield was downed at the Ashford 4. With the
second team defense in, Joe Taylor was given credit on third down
for a safety as he tackled a Jacket in his own endzone, and the
final score was reached at 32 - 0.
After the free punt, Robert Lee and Jonathan Robinson combined for
a first down which allowed more than enough time to elapse from
the clock, and the Trojans had shut out the last opponent which
had shut them out three seasons earlier.
