SENIOR NIGHT  Carlisle Field.   Game Conditions:  Cloudy, windy, second half drizzle.  Game Temperature: 62  Wind  NW 12

C.J. Duncan rushed for three first half touchdowns, and threw a touchdown pass on the final play of the first half as Saint James celebrated Senior Night by taking early command in defeating its Vaughn Road neighbors to the west, the Catholic Knights, 40 - 6.

It took Saint James less than a minute to dent the scoreboard.  A short Catholic kickoff into a brisk wind was fair caught by Kane Davenport at the Trojan 32.  On first down, Frank Moody caught a seven yard pass.  On second down, Cal Cherry ran for 11 yards on a first down.  On the next play, Duncan called his own number, wriggled around midfield defenders, and began pulling away at the 30 yard line on his way to a 50 yard score.  Austin Meadows first of four consecutive made extra points gave the Trojans a 7 - 0 lead 57 seconds into the game.

After an endzone kick and a three and out for the Knights, the Trojans took possession on the Catholic 40.  A false start penalty before the first snap set the stage for a three and out for Saint James, but Wilson Adams' punt was knocked away from the endzone by Forrest Taylor and downed by other Trojans at the four yard line.  Three consecutive runs lost yardage, back inside the two, and the pressure put on the Knight punter caused the punt to go nearly straight up and land at the Knight 15.

The Trojans were running very vanilla plays from, of all formations, the wishbone early in the game.  After Duncan lost yardage on a fumbled snap, Riley Newton was called in to attempt a 34 yard field goal, which he drilled, and the Trojans were up 10 - 0 with less than four minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

After another endzone kick, Catholic finally picked up their initial first down of the game as Connor Wright ran for 27 yards on first down, and a tackle from behind by Forrest Taylor may have prevented a touchdown.  However, a one yard loss on a run and two incomplete passes resulted in another punt, which Jake Jabour fair caught at the Trojan 25.  From there, it took Saint James only four plays to traverse the 75 yards.  After a long incomplete pass, Frank Moody rushed for four yards.  On third down, Duncan lofted a pass high into the air and Jabour came down with the catch before being shoved out of bounds after a 57 yard reception to the Knight 14.  On the next play, Duncan was looking for an open receiver in the endzone, but could not find one before pressure was applied.  He broke out of the pocket and used careful footwork to stay inbounds and scoot down the near sidelines for a touchdown.  Meadows again converted and the Trojans were up by 17 late in the first quarter.

Catholic's Henry Beesely, replacing injured quarterback Mike Tyner, tried his best to move the Knight offense and picked up 20 yards on a late first quarter carry.  Three plays later, the Knights benefited from a roughing the kicker penalty on a punt.  However, several plays later on fourth down from the Trojan 28, an incomplete pass gave the ball back to Saint James.  Catholic had used nearly half of the second quarter on their drive, and the Trojans used almost five more minutes themselves before scoring again.  A 50 yard completion from Duncan to Graham Norwood went from one 25 to the other 25, overcoming a holding penalty on a long Duncan run.  Duncan, who only carried six times in the game, ran for nine yards and a first down to the Knight 11 several plays later.  After Frank Moody picked up nine yards on the next two plays, Duncan called his own number again for a third touchdown run, this one from two yards, and Saint James was up 24 - 0 with less than two minutes remaining in the half.

There would be plenty more scoring however.  After a kickoff was muffed and returned only to the 5 by Catholic, Saint James called three immediate timeouts and forced a Catholic punt with 65 seconds remaining.  From the Knight 41, Moody caught a 19 yard pass on first down.  However, after an incomplete pass, Brett Foxworth intercepted a pass intended for Norwood at the one yard line.  There was really no room for Beesely to down the ball to end the half, so he lined up in a shotgun formation and took a direct snap, but could not escape the endzone as Percy Shuford and several other tacklers buried Beesely for a safety with 26 seconds left.  Coincidentally, Saint James now had 26 points.  And they would add more in the second quarter.  After the free kick was returned by Zach Taylor to the 34, Duncan tossed a pass to Norwood down to the 10 yard line.  After a spike stopped the clock with less than 8 seconds remaining, Duncan again looked toward the endzone and found Norwood just inside the goal line and just stepping before hitting the near sidelines for a last second touchdown.  Meadows extra point sent the happy Trojans to the locker room with a 33 - 0 lead.

Catholic caught a break as Foxworth returned the second half kickoff to the Trojan 41, but three plays later on fourth and four, another Beesely pass was incomplete.  In fact, Catholic failed to complete a pass in the entire game.  The Trojans took advantage of a personal foul penalty, the only penalty accessed against the Knights all evening.  On just the first drive of the third quarter, reserves were already taking places of first stringers.  Senior Tyler Haveard ran twice for nine yards, and then Cal Cherry was given the ball four straight times, for 15, 15, 2, and 1 yard for a touchdown.  This time Riley Newton boomed the extra point and the night was over for the Trojans starters as they led 40 - 0 early in the third quarter.

The Knights finally responded on their next drive against, in essence, the junior varsity defense.  It appeared that would not be the case on a fourth down and 17, but the Trojans were making so many substitutions, twelve men were on the field for the punt.  The fifteen yard penalty didn't give the Knights a first down, but gave them a shot on fourth and two from their own 33.  After the Knights called a timeout, the Trojans decided to bunch in and stop the run, foregoing a possible pass.  They guessed right, as Connor Wright took the handoff off right tackle, but once he managed to break through the crowded line, there was no one in the secondary to stop him and he raced for a 67 yard touchdown and Catholic's zero finally changed.  A very high snap on the extra point attempt led to a failed two point conversion, but there would be no shutout tonight as the Knights had scored six late in the third quarter.

After Saint James fumbled on their first play from scrimmage at the 35 yard line, it appeared Catholic would threaten again.  However, on fourth and six they could only manage to gain five yards and the Trojan defense had held again.   By now, both teams, especially the Knights, were just ready to run the clock out as the mist prevalent since halftime now was becoming more substantial.  Catholic got as close as the Trojan 11 on their next drive before a sack on a halfback option pass led to an eventual turnover on downs to Saint James.  Several plays later, the Trojans punted out only as far as the 25 yard line, and with time running out quickly, the Knights pressed for one more score while the Saint James backups showed their resolve.  Wellington Westendorf's 20 yard run down to the Trojan 4 set up first down, but Wright could only gain two yards on three plays.  On fourth down, Calvin Freeman took a pitch but he was downed after a long scramble for no gain and the Trojans needed only one play to down the ball and preserve its first 8 - 2 regular season record since 2001 with first time opponent Lincoln looming as the playoffs were now only a week away.
