September 9, 2011. Andalusia Stadium. Game
Conditions: Clear, low humidity Game
Temperature: 74 Wind: Calm
The Trojans were absolutely stymied on both sides of the ball in
the first half, netting just 8 yards of offense while allowing
305. Things weren't much better in the second half as the
Bulldogs seriously threatened the 500 yard mark. Jacard
Townsend ran for three touchdowns, passed for another from his
halfback position, and added a two point conversion run.
Backup quarterback Michael McCalman also scored on two long
breakaway runs late as Andalusia thumped Saint James in their
fourth consecutive meeting with a 52 - 14 whipping.
After the opening play of the game, a Riley Newton endzone
kickoff, things went downhill quickly for the Trojans.
Townsend ran for 34 yards on the second play from scrimmage for a
first down. Several plays later, starting quarterback C.P.
Rogers ran for a first down. Two plays later, he found an
absolutely wide open receiver in David Mahaffey behind all Trojan
defenders in the middle of the field and he cruised in for a 33
yard touchdown. After a Bulldog timeout, they decided to
attempt a two point conversion and Rafeal Sims took the ball
easily into the endzone giving Andalusia an early 8 - 0 lead.
The Trojans lost four yards on each of their first two plays, and
unfortunately lost # 4, Walker Woodson, for the remainder of the
game due to injury on that second play. After a third down
incompletion, Saint James maintained possession after a roughing
the kicker penalty on a punt. This would be one of the only
two first downs the Trojans would earn in the first half.
Four plays later, Wilson Adams' punt was returned to the Bulldog
40. It took Andalusia only eight plays to tally another
touchdown, albeit a contraversial one. On third and 13 from
the Trojan 23, Townsend took a pitch from Rogers and this time the
halfback found a wide open Mahaffey down the middle for a second
reception touchdown. However, a flag had been thrown because
Mahaffey was judged to be lined up as an ineligible
receiver. After a discussion among the officials, the flag
was waved off much to the dismay of the Saint James sidelines, and
the touchdown was allowed to stand. This time an extra point
kick was attempted, but it was wide left and Andalusia's lead was
14 nearing the end of the first quarter.
Frank Moody picked up 15 yards on the next Saint James scrimmage
play, earning that other first down, but the yardage was quickly
given back up. After a punt on the opening play of the
second quarter, Andalusia drove 72 yards in 11 plays, including
several notable ones. Lakelyus Adams caught a 27 yard pass
for a first down. Several plays later, after a Sims run for
another first down, Townsend was lucky to pick up a poor pitch and
he managed to lose only about 10 yards on a wild scramble while
maintaining possession for his team. Two plays later, on
fourth and 11 from the Trojan 34, Rogers lifted a desperation-type
pass to Mahaffey who made an unbelievable catch at the 6 yard
line. Two plays later, Townsend carried in from the 5.
This time the extra point attempt was blocked, but Andalusia had a
20 point lead midway through the second quarter.
Saint James would go three and out, and the Bulldogs would only
take three plays to score. A 20 yard run by Sims, a 1 yarder
by Mahaffey, and a 34 yarder for Townsend put Andalusia in the
endzone again. Rogers called his own number on a two point
conversion and strolled in, giving Andalusia a dominating four
touchdown lead. After another three and out by the Trojans,
the Bulldogs were driving again late in the half, but the Trojans
finally held as a Mahaffey pass on fourth down went incomplete,
and the Trojans headed to the locker room, or more accurately the
grassy northwest corner of Andalusia Stadium, after an unpleasant
24 minutes of football.
The Trojans would put together their best drive of the night to
start the third quarter, taking up nearly half of the time.
Haynes Litchfield caught a 15 yard pass for a first down, and C.J.
Duncan broke away on his longest run of the night, a 20 yarder,
for another first down. However, after a pass completion
and a run lost a total of 10 yards, Saint James was back to the
Bulldog 21. Duncan looked and found Wilson Adams open for an
apparent touchdown, but flags were thrown on the play.
Amazingly, Saint James was called for the ineligible receiver
infraction which had been waved off on the Andalusia touchdown
earlier. Fortunately for Saint James, a defensive personal
foul occurred on the same play, so technically offsetting
penalties prevented the score. After the five yard penalty
was marked off against the Trojans, the personal foul penalty was
assessed half the distance, and Saint James had another chance
from the Bulldog 13. Duncan ran for 9 yards, leaving Saint
James with a fourth and 3 from the 4 yard line. Finally the
Trojans hit paydirt as Duncan tossed a pass into the waiting arms
of Jake Jabour, earlier announced as the week 2 WSFA Fever Athlete
of the Week, who was on his knees in the endzone for the
score. The extra point snap went way over the head of
everyone, and the conversion failed, but at least Saint James had
some life as they had cut the lead to three scores to start the
second half.
Andalusia used up most of the rest of the third quarter clock on
their drive, travelling 62 yards for another score. On first
and 15 from the Trojan 36, Rogers got loose through the middle but
the ball was knocked away from him and dribbled forward. As
"luck" would have it, Andalusia's Carlos Luckie picked up the
bouncing ball and took it down all the way to the Trojan 8,
preventing what could have been a game-changing turnover.
Townsend scored easily on the next play, and Rogers added the two
point conversion run to boost the Bulldogs lead to 30
points. After a Trojan punt, the second team offense took
the field for the Bulldogs. And on the second play, backup
quarterback Michael McCalman burst up the middle and pulled away
from tiring Trojan defenders for a 63 yard touchdown.
Courson Hopkins finally connected on an extra point kick, and
Andalusia had the game well in control at 43 - 6.
Saint James would score on their next drive. Jake Jabour
hauled in a 30 yard pass and run on the final play of the third
quarter. Several plays later, a pass interference penalty
gave Saint James a key first down at the Bulldog 40. From
there, Duncan scrambled, avoiding potential tacklers, and found
Frank Moody downfield who made a fine catch among defenders and
ran the remaining yards in for a touchdown. Duncan scored on
his own two point conversion run, which coincidentally turned out
to be the 7000th point ever scored by a Saint James varsity
football team, to cut the lead to 43 - 14 early in the fourth
quarter.
Not for long. Three plays later, McCalman called the same
play as the previous drive, and cashed in the same way with a
frighteningly similar 75 yard breakaway. Hopkins' extra
point allowed the Bulldogs to reach the 50 point plateau. By
now, reserves were plentiful on both sides. A turnover-free
game for both sides appeared to be a possibility, and would have
been the second consecutive game for Saint James without a
turnover, but both reserve quarterbacks fumbled snaps which were
recovered by the other team nixing that chance. Andalusia
did add a safety in the last 70 seconds of the game after their
second punt of the game was beautifully struck to the one yard
line, and the Trojans could not exit the endzone on the following
carry, giving the Bulldogs the final margin of 52 - 14.
After the free punt, the clock mercifully ran out and the Trojans
could only look ahead to the following game.
