After quite frankly a very uninspiring first half by the Trojans
on Senior Night, Saint James came alive with a school record 45
points in the second half and overcame a halftime deficit to
defeat the Bullock County Hornets 52 - 28 in a game in which John
Slayton tied another school record with five rushing touchdowns.
Bullock County has been known in the recent past for their big
play scores, not usually for sustained drives. You would
have never guessed how the Hornets scored on their first drive of
the game - a methodical drive. After a net gain of zero on
the first two plays, the combination of quarterback Gregory Junior
and tailback Jeffrey Scott rushed for double digit yardage on each
of the next five plays, moving easily through the normally more
stout Trojan defensive line. Junior's keeper of 25 yards
down to the Trojan 2 proceeded the only rushing touchdown the
Hornets would score, his own. Luis Cervantes made the extra
point, and perhaps surprisingly, the Hornets were up 7 - 0 early.
The first three Trojan possessions were, to put it mildly, not
things of beauty. After converting a gutsy fourth down and 1
from its own 26, a sack stifled the drive. Despite an
unsuccessful fake punt by Bullock County giving Saint James great
field position, a penalty and a near-interception prevented any
scoring threat there. After a nearly blocked punt gave Saint
James the ball at the Hornet 33, it was promptly fumbled away on
first down. A 35 yard pass completion from Junior to Scott
on the last play of the first quarter helped Bullock County regain
momentum in a sluggish game. However, two plays later, Mason
McCabe intercepted a pass tipped by teammate Crawford Steinberg
and again the Trojans had fine field position. However,
another penalty slowed the march, and the Hornets began another
impressive march of their own. A 34 yard run by Scott and a
pass reception by Shawn Cumming gave Bullock County first down at
the Trojan 6. A first down run of 5 yards implied a
touchdown was nearby. However, two stops sandwiching a
defensive penalty of mere inches led to fourth down, and a fumbled
snap actually led to Saint James taking over at their own 2.
On third down, finally the Trojans had a spark as John Slayton
leaped over a potential tackler and picked up 33 yards, giving the
Trojans a first down and some breathing room. However, after
a sack, Saint James was forced to punt again, and disaster struck
as Scott took the ball at his own 29, faced some congestion about
10 yards downfield, but broke through that and pulled away for a
71 yard punt return, unofficially the second longest ever given up
by Saint James. Cervantes' extra point had the near
sidelines almost silent and the winless Hornets up 14 with 2½
minutes before halftime.
Slayton returned the ensuing kickoff to the 35, and picked up 25
yards on first down. The next play was a pass to the endzone
which appeared to be finally a touchdown but the ball refused to
be held. Two C.J. Duncan runs continued the drive, and after
an incomplete pass, Duncan completed the only significant pass of
the entire evening to Steinberg, who was open in the center of the
field. He was brought down just 2½ yards short of the goal
line, but with time running out in the half, Slayton carried in
for 3 yards on the next play, just diving onto the goal line with
the football, and finally the zero was removed. Austin
Meadows' extra point cut the Hornet lead in half, at 14 - 7, and
the Trojans went to the locker room hoping to build on the late
momentum.
They did indeed - in record breaking fashion. Slayton
returned the ensuing kickoff 39 yards to the Trojan 46. He
carried for four on first down, and Walker Woodson followed with a
not-too-common carry and scooted in, around, and through the
Hornet defense for 27 yards of his own. On the next play,
Slayton took advantage of the perhaps confused defense with a 23
yard touchdown, his second of five on the night. Meadows'
extra point tied the game at 14 early in the third quarter.
On fourth down from their own 30, Bullock County attempted a long
pass which fell incomplete, and the Trojans suddenly had great
field position again. They got as far as the 10 yard line
but stalled, so Meadows was called on to convert a lead-taking 29
yard field goal which he did, and Saint James had finally gotten
ahead for the first time. After a Hornet fumble on the first
scrimmage play, the Trojans had another short field. Three
plays later, on first down from the 23, lineman Cal Cherry was
handed the ball and he rumbled through and over a tackler or two
and plowed into the endzone for a touchdown, the third in the last
8 minutes of clock. The Meadows extra point gave Saint James
a 10 point lead at 24 - 14.
Another Hornet turnover, an interception by Crawford Steinberg
which was returned to the Trojan 21, again gave the Trojans a
short field with which to work. After a Nick Ostrye carry,
Slayton marched in from the 15, and Austin Meadows' extra point
gave the Trojans 31 points in less than the span of a quarter and
a confidence which had been rare throughout the season.
A bad quarterback snap on the first play of the next Bullock
County drive forced the ball all the way back to the 1. A
pressured punt only traveled 16 yards, and as was becoming habit,
Saint James was close to the red zone again. Slayton carried
for 9 yards, Ostrye for 12, and Ostrye for another 2 on the final
play of the third quarter. To open the final period, Slayton
picked up his fourth touchdown from 4 yards out and Saint James
was up now a comfortable 38 - 14.
The Hornets failed to convert a fourth down from their own 38, but
finally the defense stiffened and kept Saint James out of the
endzone. A Wilson Adams punt was downed at the 14, and on
the next play a Bullock County pass was intercepted by Forrest
Taylor and returned to the Hornet 9. Taylor Poe was now at
quarterback and he called his own number twice, for 7 yards and
then the 2 on a sneak for a touchdown. Nick Ostrye was
called upon and he converted the extra point, and Saint James had
scored 45 unanswered points in what seemed like minutes to turn a
feeble performance into a festive one.
The excitement was tempered somewhat as Scott fielded a slightly
muffed kickoff, raced toward the near sidelines, and snuck by
several Trojan tacklers between the 30 and 45 yards lines before
breaking loose on an 85 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
It was the third longest kickoff return against Saint James, and
probably the first time both a punt and kickoff have been returned
for touchdowns in the same game, much less by the same
person. The extra point cut the lead to 45 - 21, but it
would give the Trojans another possession. An onside
kick attempt was safely cradled by Jake Jabour at midfield, and
Slayton and William Olsey shared the exclusive rushing duties on
the drive. Slayton tied a school record held by two others
with his fifth rushing touchdown of the game, a 4 yarder.
Meadows came back to convert his sixth extra point in six
attempts, and Saint James had crossed the 50 point plateau for the
first time in five years. They also broke the 300 yard
rushing plateau for the first time since the 2007 game against the
Hornets.
The Hornets managed another late score, by the big play method, as
Junior tossed a long pass to Cumming who pulled it in over a
second string defender and raced 71 yards for the final score of
the evening. A penalty on the ensuing kickoff gave the
Hornets another chance for a late onside kick, but it bounced out
of bounds and the Trojans ran the clock out on the way to a third
victory of the season and a positive outlook going into the final
contest of the year against neighboring rival Catholic.
