Saint James managed over 300 yards of offense against the Yellow
Jackets, but Ashford's tandem of Malvin Anderson and Jarvus Moore
ran for over 350 yards combined and the Trojan defense could not
stop the onslaught as Ashford kept their perfect record alive with
a 35 - 21 defeat of the visiting Trojans.
The Yellow Jackets received the opening kickoff and methodically
paced themselves down the field on a 77 yard touchdown drive on
their opening possession in 13 plays. The Trojans had
appeared to have stopped the Jackets before they made a first
down, but a face mask penalty continued the drive. No double
digit running plays were pulled off by Ashford, but on the 13th
play of the drive Demichael Wigfall picked up his first of two
touchdowns with a 3 yard run. Saint James blocked the extra
point, but Ashford was up 6 - 0 midway through the first quarter.
The Trojans answered in less than half the plays. A medium
range kickoff was returned by William Olsey to the Trojans
41. Runs by John Slayton, C.J. Duncan, and Olsey wach picked
up first downs, the latter to the Jacket 18. After a yard
loss, Duncan rared back and found a wide open Slayton behind the
Jacket defense in the endzone for the first Saint James score of
the night. Austin Meadows' kick was good, and Saint James
was up 7 - 6 after each team had one possession.
It took Ashford only four plays to respond. Quarterback
James Gardner ran for 15 yards and a first down on the third play
of the drive, and then on the next play Malvin Anderson picked up
nearly a sixth of his night rushing total with a 42 yard escape
and run for a touchdown. This time the Ashford extra point
was good, and they regained the lead at 13 - 7 in a high scoring
first quarter where both offenses moved at will. However,
for the remainder of the half, the defenses on both sides
stiffened. Neither team got inside the other's 40 yard line,
although both came close twice in the second quarter.
Ashford maintained and took the early 6 point lead into halftime.
William Olsey got the Trojans in gear with a kickoff return to the
Saint James 45. A 4 yard run by Duncan, a 26 yarder by
Slayton, a 9 yarder by Nick Ostrye, and a 16 yard run on a
quarterback sneak play where the Jackets defense was not prepared
gave the Trojans a touchdown and a tie which was broken by
Meadows' extra point. Saint James led 14 - 13 early in the
third quarter.
Two minutes later, on a peculiar play, Ashford regained the
lead. Jarvus Moore had broken away down the field for an
apparent touchdown. Trojan Forrest Taylor was running after
him trying to stop him before crossing the goal line to conclude a
57 yard touchdown run, but he was blocked from behind in the back
as the chase neared the goal. After some discussion amongst
the officials, it was decided the runner had crossed the goal line
prior to the illegal block. The touchdown was allowed to
stand, and the penalty would be enforced on the kickoff.
After all the confusion, Ashford failed on a two point conversion
pass, but had regained a 5 point lead at 19 - 14.
An intentional grounding penalty stifled the next Trojan drive,
and Ashford appeared to be duplicating their initial drive of the
game as they plodded down the field. However, on first down
from the Trojan 6, Gardner fumbled a snap and the ball was picked
up by Ostrye and returned to the Trojan 11 as Saint James avoided
what could have been a game clinching score. The Trojans ran
out the third quarter, but a short punt gave Ashford good field
position and two plays after an 18 yard run, Jarvus Moore scored
his second touchdown on a 34 yard breakway. Ashford again
tried the two point conversion, and Anderson snuck inside the far
upright for the two, giving Ashford a 27 - 14 lead early in the
fourth quarter.
Duncan got his short passing game going on the next drive in
catchup mode. With Slayton and Olsey on the bench with
injuries, some new and unfamiliar names made offensive
strides. Jake Jabour caught a pass for a first down, as did
Taylor Wachs, and a personal foul penalty after a short run moved
the ball down to the Jacket 9. Three plays later, it was
again Duncan on the sneak for a two yard touchdown, and the
Meadows extra point cut the Ashford lead to 6 at 27 - 21 with just
less than 7 minutes remaining in the game.
A penalty after the touchdown gave the Trojans a chance to pin the
Jackets deep in their territory on the kickoff, which they
did. However, an Anderson run of 60 yards several plays
later, where Taylor was fortunate to prevent the touchdown,
quickly changed field position and three plays later Wigfell
scored his second touchdown of the night from 4 yards out.
Gardner scored on a two point keeper, and the score, which would
be the final, became 35 - 21 with 3½ minutes remaining.
Duncan guided Saint James down the field by the run and pass, with
Jabour nabbing two more catches and Lee Ketzler with two as
well. The second Ketzler catch appeared to be a touchdown,
but a referee marked him out of bounds at the Ashford. Two
plays lost a yard, and then on third down Duncan was intercepted
at the goal line by his opposing quarterback Gardner in a
defensive back position. Despite the ball being on the one
yard line, Saint James had used all of their time outs and the
Jackets were able to run the clock out before having to punt, and
the Trojans, now losers of 9 in a row over two seasons, wanted to
make sure they did not tie the school record of 10 consecutive
losses as they returned home for three consecutive midseason
games.
