Andalusia scored a touchdown on its final possession of the first
half, and five touchdowns on its four possessions in the second
half (including a fumble return for the final score), and the
Saint James defense which was strong for the first 22 minutes of
the game looked overmatched the final 26 as the Trojans were
soundly whipped in their home opener by the visiting Bulldogs in a
fast moving game, 42 - 13.
Saint James did win its first toss of the season, deferred to the
second half, but promptly kicked off out of bounds.
Andalusia picked up several first downs, giving them field
possession advantage, but punted down to the Trojan 8.
Several plays later, Wilson Adams' 48 yard punt did push the ball
back over midfield. The Bulldogs were stopped on fourth and
one, and the Trojans moved the ball primarily on the running of
C.J. Duncan and Nick Ostrye down as close as the Bulldog 6.
However, after a sack, Saint James was forced to attempt a field
goal. Austin Meadows converted from 32 yards, and the
Trojans were up 3 - 0 late in the first quarter.
Momentum remained with the Trojans as Andalusia fumbled on their
first play from scrimmage, and Nick Ostrye almost returned his
second fumble in two weeks for a touchdown, being brought down as
he was about to break loose. However, after one first down,
another huge sack pushed the Trojans back and a endzone punt ended
the threat. Andalusia was held on a three and out, and
William Olsey fielded a low punt and returned it 25 yards to the
Bulldog 26. Three plays gained no yardage, and Meadows was
called in to test his distance. He found it, as the field
goal attempt hit the crossbar and bounced through for a successful
43 yard field goal, giving the Trojans a 6 - 0 lead midway through
the second quarter.
After another Andalusia three and out, the Trojans could have
taken a double digit lead, but they were forced to punt as
well. From their own 28, Andalusia called on Derrick King
twice. His first play was for three yards. The next
one, 69 and a touchdown as he went around right end and outraced
potential tacklers on his way to the first of four scores on the
night and just less than 200 yards rushing. Courson Hopkins'
extra point gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the night at 7 -
6 with less than two minutes left in the first half. The
Trojans were driving, but a C.J. Duncan pass was intercepted on a
fantastic catch by Lakelyus Adams as he danced to keep his feet in
bounds while avoiding an offensive defender just outside the
endzone. The Bulldogs ran out the clock on the next
play, and everyone seemed to expect a tight second half as the
first one had been.
Such was not the case. The Bulldogs only had four
possessions in the second half, and scored five touchdowns on
them. Saint James had the ball first, but another big sack
pushed them back deep into their territory, and a 25 yard punt
return by Derrick King gave the Bulldogs first down on the Trojan
27. King broke away for a touchdown on the next play, but it
was erased by a holding penalty. However, he picked up 21 on
the next carry and four plays later carried in from the Trojan 3
for his second score. The Hopkins extra point gave Andalusia
a 14 - 6 lead.
A 32 yard scramble by Duncan gave the Trojans some momentum, but
Saint James could not convert a fourth down on the Bulldog
30. The key play of the game may have been four later as
with fourth and 7, the Bulldogs exercised a fake punt with success
as Jacard Townsend, normally a secondary player, took the snap
directly and picked up the necessary yardage for the first
down. The ball was knocked loose by Trojan tacklers, but
Andalusia lineman Lex Bradley was in the right place to recover
the loose ball and continue the Bulldog possession. After
two runs by King, fullback Joseph Flowers, number 35, carried for
35 yards and a touchdown. Andalusia decided to go for 2, and
was successful as Ethan Jones just snuck inside the pylon for the
two point conversion, giving the Bulldogs a 22 - 6 lead late in
the third quarter.
Another good punt return by King set up the next Andalusia drive
of 41 yards. King as a halfback completed his only pass
attempt of the evening, a 31 yarder to Wesley Maye, down to the
Trojan 10. Flowers carried twice for 5 yards, and King
carried twice for the remaining 5, scoring on fourth down.
This time the Hopkins extra point failed, but Andalusia seemed to
be in command with a 28 - 6 lead.
Backup quarterback Taylor Poe was brought in by Saint James, and
his second pass was intercepted by Robert Woodall and returned 16
yards to the Trojans 36. Six plays later, King carried in
from the 14 for his fourth and final touchdown of the
evening. The extra point sealed the deal for sure for
Andalusia at 35 - 6 with just over 5 minutes remaining in the
game.
Poe led the Trojans to their only touchdown drive against a mix of
starters and reserves on the Bulldog defense. His 21 yard
completion to Lee Ketzler and an accompanying 15 yard personal
foul penalty moved the ball down to the Bulldog 34. Two
plays later, he lofted a pass toward the endzone which Taylor
Wachs fell on his back, rolled around in the endzone, and caught
the falling duck for a great touchdown. Meadows converted
the extra point cutting the late Bulldog lead to 35 - 13 with 3:38
remaining in the game.
It seemed Saint James was on the way to making the score more
respectable when Wilson Adams recovered an onside kick deflection
on the next play. However, disaster struck on the next play
when Poe completed a pass to Walker Woodson on the sideline.
The ball was knocked out and Quadree Robinson picked up the ball
at the 44 yard line and ran basically untouched 56 yards into the
endzone for the fumble return touchdown. Hopkins' extra
point closed out the scoring, mercifully, at 42 - 13.
The Trojans tried to get on the scoreboard once more.
Several runs by Ostrye and a roughing the passer penalty gave the
Trojans some yardage, but time ran out as they neared midfield and
Saint James looked to prepare for another long regional road trip
in week four.
