Despite three costly mistakes in the
first quarter, the Trojans managed to be down only 10 points
entering the second quarter. Two second half touchdowns, the
second with less than 2½ minutes remaining in the game, gave Saint
James a lead, but it was very temporary. Less than a minute
later, the Wildcats had driven for their own go-ahead touchdown,
the final reception of the night by Mark White, and Trinity held
on for a hard fought 20 - 16 victory to start the 2010 season.
Trouble started for the Trojans on the third scrimmage play of the
game as the ball was stripped from quarterback C.J. Duncan and
recovered by the Wildcats at the Saint James 21. However,
Trinity could only get as close as the 13 yard line, and Andy
Pappanastos was called on to kick a 30 yard field goal, which he
did, and Trinity was up early 3 - 0.
After an endzone kickoff, the Trojans picked up their initial
first down of the season on a 12 yard catch and run from Duncan to
William Olsey. On the next play, Crawford Steinberg was on
the receiving end of a dart across the field. However, after
picking up 30 yards, the Wildcat defenders wrestled the ball away
from him and took over possession on their own 35. A 44 yard
pass from Josh Watkins to Mark White quickly changed field
position, and a personal foul penalty after the next play gave
Trinity a first down at the Trojan 11. However, the defense
stiffened and forced three consecutive incomplete passes, and
Pappanastos was called on again. This time, his 29 yard
field goal just went wide right, and Saint James had avoided a
second bullet.
Duncan picked up two first downs on runs and moved the ball into
Wildcat territory. However, a costly block in the back
penalty and a fumbled snap pushed the ball back, and then Wilson
Adams' first punt attempt of the year was blocked as well with
Trinity taking over again deep in Saint James territory at the
20. This time they would not be denied the endzone, although
after a 19 yard pass reception by White on the first play it was
not easy at best for Trinity. After an infinitesmal penalty
against Saint James for a substitution infraction, two straight
running plays were stopped at the 1 and a false start pushed the
ball back to the 6. Maybe that was what the Wildcats needed,
as Watkins called his own number around left end for a 6 yard
touchdown run, and the Pappanastos extra point gave Trinity a 10 -
0 lead late in the first quarter when their lead could easily have
been double that many.
After another endzone kick, the Trojan offense finally started
clicking. Duncan passes to John Slayton and Lee Ketzler
moved the ball near midfield as the second quarter began. A
15 yard personal foul after a 13 yard Duncan run preceded Slayton
runs of 12 and 7, and the Trojans were down to the Trinity
4. However, a delay of game and a sack forced the ball back
to the 18 where Austin Meadows was called on for his first career
kick, a 32 yard field goal. The kick was very low and
wobbly, but managed not to get blocked and stayed straight to just
clear the crossbar for success, and Saint James was within 7 that
quickly, at 10 - 3.
The momentum continued when Trinity muffed a short kickoff and
Saint James recovered at the Wildcat 44. However, the next
four drives ended in punts, with Trinity making headway little by
little in the scrimmage battle. A John Strawbridge punt went
out of bounds at the Saint James 7 with 1:23 left. Trinity
used their timeouts and forced a Trojan punt which was downed at
the Saint James 34. Five plays later, on the last play of
the first half, Pappanastos connected on his second field goal
from 19 yards, and Saint James only trailed by 10, 13 - 3 at
halftime. That was only the second time a team had kicked
two successful field goals against Saint James in the same
game. Trinity's Brooks Blackmon matched the "feet" three
years earlier.
Trinity took possession to start the third quarter, but disaster
struck them as Crawford Steinberg sighted and intercepted a pass
for Saint James and returned it 57 yards for the Trojan's first
touchdown of the year. The extra point snap was bad and the
attempt failed, but quite suddenly Saint James was back in the
game at 13 - 9. Suddenly, Trinity's offense slowed
down as the Saint James defense tightened, holding the Wildcats to
just two first downs in their next five possessions.
However, the Trojans didn't fare much better, and valuable time
was being eaten away on the clock. After the fourth quarter
heat time out, the Trojans took over on their own 14 yard line
with just over 5½ minutes remaining. Immediate runs of 7 by
Duncan, 15 by Slayton, and 6 more by Duncan were followed by a
short pass completion to Slayton and another Duncan run, giving
the Trojans first down at midfield. Nick Ostrye came in for
his solitary run of the ballgame, a nice 7 yarder, and it was
followed immediately by Slayton through the right tackle, bursting
into the Trinity secondary and outracing them for a 43 yard
touchdown giving the Trojans their first lead of the season.
Meadows' important extra point gave Saint James a 16 - 13
advantage with 2:27 remaining in the game and the Trojan sideline
howling and going wild.
However, the arm of Josh Watkins led Trinity on a touchdown drive
of their own. Two completions to White and a run by Watkins
gave Trinity a second down at the Trinity 43. On the next
play, White sprung the block for Robert Farris, who busted down
the far sideline for a 34 yard catch and run down to the Trojan
19. On the very next play, Farris returned the favor for
White, who dove into the endzone just before being tackled and
Trinity had regained the lead. The Pappanastos extra point
meant Saint James would need a touchdown to win.
However, on the first scrimmage play, a Duncan pass was
intercepted by James Bethea, and Trinity managed a first down
conversion on fourth and 2 which left virtually no time remaining
on the game clock, and the Wildcats had again defeated the Trojans
in hard fought game which could have easily gone either way.
