Friday, September 26, 2008   Carlisle Field  HOMECOMING 2008  Game conditions:  Mostly clear   Game temperature:  78  Wind:  W 2 - 5

Saint James got off to a fast start, scoring the first 14 points of the game, but Montgomery Academy retaliated with 33 straight points over the second and third quarters as the Eagles cruised to a 40 - 20 victory over the Trojans at "Under the Sea" night as part of Homecoming 2008.

For the first time all season, the Trojans got an early break as the Eagles fumbled on the second play of their opening drive, leaving Saint James with a short field.  Matt Dean converted a fourth down with a quarterback sneak, and Clinton Freeman picked up 13 and 19 yards on the ground on 2 of the next 3 plays.  From the Eagle 5, Chase Christian carried for 4 yards, and then for the final yard for a touchdown.  B.J. Weldon's extra point gave the Trojans a 7 - 0 lead midway through the first quarter.

The Trojan defense held M A to a 3 and out, and Saint James moved the ball again impressively in a 79 yard drive highlighted by Dean passes to Wade Norwood and Brandyn Baker.  On the first play of the second quarter, Freeman took the handoff and broke through several tackles on the far sideline going 26 yards for another touchdown, and perhaps surprisingly Saint James was up 14 - 0.

After an endzone kickoff, the Eagle offense awoke.  Jarvis Fullenwilder picked up 33 yards on a catch and run on a Douglas Sellers pass.  Three consecutive runs of 11, 12, and 21 yards, the latter by Fullenwilder, had M A quickly in the endzone.  The extra point was blocked, so the Trojans maintained their 8 point lead.

Freeman picked up double digit runs twice on the next drive, but a costly busted play on fourth and 1 from their own 46 turned the ball over, and the Eagles capitalized.  Fullenwilder and Jeffrey Ashurst shared the load on the next 5 plays; Ashurst scoring the touchdown on the fifth play for 18 yards.  A two point conversion pass was caught, but out of bounds, and Saint James still had a lead, but considerably more shaky than several minutes before, at 14 - 12.

Neither team could significantly move the ball in the last four minutes of the first half, and the Trojans were more than content to run the clock out to take a lead into the locker room as Jordan Chambless was crowned Homecoming Queen 2008 during the usual sparkling haltime ceremonies.

Exactly as happened in the opening half, disaster struck on the second play from scrimmage, but this time the Trojans were the victim of a lost fumble.  From the Trojan 19, Ashurst carried three times for 11, 3, and 5 yards respectively.  He was even rewarded with a two point conversion run, and M A had their first lead at 20 - 14.

Saint James picked up one first down on a 12 yard reception by Christian, but a punt gave the Eagles the ball on their own 37.  Three Ashurst runs and one Fullenwilder jaunt had M A on the scoreboard again.  Ashurst broke a tackle inside the 5 yard line and stumbled into the endzone after a 34 yard touchdown run, his third of the evening.  This time he was stopped on a two point conversion, but the Eagles were now up by two possessions at 26 - 14.  An interception on the next drive by Eagle Spears Rhodes gave M A a short field at the Trojan 26.  Fullenwilder scored on the sixth play of the game from two yards out, and this time Matthew Massey converted the extra point kick, and the Eagles had rattled off 33 unanswered points to shatter the early Trojan lead.

The Trojans finally righted their offensive ship.  A good kickoff return by John Slayton, a tough run of 17 yards by Christian, and a fine catch and run by Chase Eley on a Dean pass moved the ball down to the Eagle 4.  Two plays later, Dean snuck in from the 1.  A two point conversion failed, but the lead was back to a two touchdown margin, at 33 - 20.  However, Ashurst and Fullenwilder, who each rushed for over 150 yards, shared the load on a 6 play drive.  Fullenwilder picked up his third score on a 3 yard touchdown run, and Massey's extra point led to the final score of the game and an eventual 40 - 20 win for the Eagles.

Dean completed two long passes on the next drive, a 25 yard catch by Christian and a fantastic throw / catch combination with Eley on a 24 yard connection.  However, Azerie Lewis picked off a Dean pass inside the Eagle 10, thwarting a late Trojan score.  From then on, primarily backups for both teams served mop up duty.  Nick Ostrye picked up an impressive 38 yards on 3 late carries for Saint James, but time ran out and Saint James looked forward to the return to region play to pick up their first victory.
