For the second consecutive week, Saint James failed to take
advantage of several touchdown opportunities presented to them as
the Bullock County Hornets overcame an amazing 16 penalties and
defeated the Trojans for the first time in series history with a
20 - 13 region victory.
Saint James appeared to have all the early momentum as a block in
the back penalty on the opening kickoff return pushed the ball
back to the Hornet 10. They did convert one first down, but
several plays afterwards Kameron Belich picked off a pass for the
second week in a row and returned it 6 yards, again to the Hornet
10. The Trojans, however, could only manage four yards on
two rushes and an incomplete pass. B.J. Weldon converted a
24 yard field goal to give Saint James an early 3 - 0 lead.
The Trojans committed only 4 accepted penalties on the evening,
but 3 of them resulted in first downs for the Hornets, including a
roughing the passer call on Bullock County's next drive.
Ladarion Baldwin's 12 yard carry gave the Hornets a first down on
the Trojan 40. Three plays later, Anthony Pendleton found an
open receiver, Quintiero Hunter, and connected with him for a 34
yard touchdown. Jadarius Prichett's extra point was good,
and suddenly the Hornets were up 7 - 3 late in the first quarter.
On the second play of the next Trojan drive, Ladarion Baldwin
intercepted a pass and returned it to the Trojan 11.
However, a delay of game penalty and a resulting unsportsmanlike
conduct penalty pushed the ball back 20 yards. After two
incomplete passes, Wade Norwood returned the favor by intercepting
a Pendleton pass and returning it 24 yards to the 48. From
there, Saint James embarked on its best drive of the season thus
far. On the first play of the second quarter, Chase
Christian ran for 8 yards and the Trojans' initial first down of
the game. Two runs and a fortunate fumble recovery by Taylor
Myers kept the drive alive. Several plays later, a defensive
offside penalty led to another first down at the Hornet 11.
Christian ran for 9 on first down, and Matt Dean called his own
number from the 2 for the first Trojan touchdown of the
season. Weldon's extra point put the Trojans back on top 10
- 7 midway through the second quarter.
Bullock County overcame two penalties and moved downfield as far
as the Saint James 30 before turning the ball over on downs.
Finally, the Trojan running game seemed to be functioning properly
sa Christian picked up 38 on a long carry boosted by a face mask
penalty. Two carries by Clinton Freeman moved the ball to
the Hornet 11. Two plays netted a loss of two yards, and on
third down a desperation quarterback scramble led to a touchdown
pass, but Dean was several yards beyond the line of scrimmage when
he threw it. The loss of down penalty and the sharp angle
which negated a good field goal try resulted in a fourth down and
17 from the 18. Dean carried and got as close as the 4, but
the Trojans lost the ball on downs. Bullock County ran the
clock out on one play, but Saint James had a 3 point lead at the
break.
A fine kickoff return by Norwood gave the Trojans good field
position to start the third quarter, but they could not convert a
first down. A good punt and a penalty pushed Bullock County
back to their own 10. Three more penalties, two delays of
game, pushed the ball back to the 6 on fourth down. With
pressure, the punter kicked the ball off the side of his foot and
in fact downed his own punt after only traveling 6 yards, at the
Hornet 12, giving Saint James an excellent opportunity to add to
their lead. They did, but could not reach the endzone.
On fourth down, Weldon kicked his second field goal, this one from
28 yards, and the Trojans lead grew to only 6 points.
Another penalty on a kickoff return pushed the Hornets back, but
they were the recipient of perhaps the break of the game by
recovering a fumble during a punt return at the Trojan 46.
Pendleton completed two passes to Kendarius Glover in the drive,
including a 20 yarder on fourth down and 6. On the second
play of the fourth quarter, Quantray Ellis carried into the
endzone from the 5 for a touchdown. Pritchett's extra point
was good, and Bullock County was back on top by a single
point.
Saint James again failed to make a first down, and could not
recover a loose ball after their punt hit the returner's foot and
travelled 25 yards backwards. The desperate Trojan defense
pushed Bullock County back 9 more yards in three plays and their
punt was deflected sideways before being landed on by Andrew
Williams at the Hornet 25, setting up another scoring
opportunity. However, two plays later, the Hornets forced
and recovered another fumble at their own 27. After a time
out, Pendleton found a wide open Hunter for a 23 yard pass, and a
defensive clipping penalty on the next play moved the ball into
Trojan territory. After a 2 yard run and another time out,
Bullock County went for broke and hit the jackpot as Pendleton's
pass to Brandon Rivers on the near side went for 35 yards and a
touchdown. The extra point was blocked, so the Trojans were
still within reach trailing only by 7, but with less than 4
minutes remaining.
From their own 31, Dean carried twice for 10 yards and 5 yards,
the second carry being doubled in yardage by a face mask
penalty. A Chase Eley reception picked up another 11 yards
and Saint James was moving the ball when it counted. On
fourth and ten, Dean completed a pass to Clinton Freeman for 15
yards and another first down. However, after an incomplete
pass and a 7 yard loss, a desperation third down pass was
intercepted by Baldwin at the Hornet 4. With only 50 seconds
and two Trojan timeouts remaining, Bullock County had enough time
and enough field to run out the clock safely as they began their
season with a big road win.
