In a game eerily similar to the one
the
previous week, with the lone exception of this game being played
at
Carlisle Field (and Homecoming at that), Jonas Randolph ran wild,
picking up 265 yards on 15 carries as he scored on 4 long
touchdown
runs, threw an 83 yard touchdown pass from his halfback position,
and
probably garnered 15 tackles on the defensive side as the
Daleville
Warhawks solidified their playoff chances with an impressive 42 -
14
victory over the Trojans.
St. James appeared to have held the Warhawks on their opening
drive of
the game, but Daleville's Jonas Randolph took a direct snap on a
fake
punt attempt to earn the Warhawks' initial first down.
However,
two short runs and an incomplete pass, the only one Daleville
would
throw the entire game, and a nice 18 yard punt return by Clinton
Freeman had the Trojans in decent field position. Similar to
last
week, a penalty and a sack stifled the first drive, and a deep
punt by
Matt Dean went out of bounds at the Warhawk 22.
Randolph
was stopped for no gain on his first carry, but St. James grabbed
five
yards worth of face mask. On the next play, Randolph broke
loose
on the left sidelines, but cut back toward the middle of the field
at
the Trojan 20 and skipped and escaped and slipped before he was
finally
brought down by Trojans at the St. James 18. Two plays
later, he
carried in from the 15 yard line for his first of four rushing
touchdowns, the shortest of the four. Daniel Holms kicked
the
first of his six consecutive points, and Daleville was up 7 - 0
late in
the first quarter.
The Trojans, unlike last week, converted a first down in the first
quarter, but it only prolonged another punt, albeit a good one out
of
bounds at the Daleville 24. Another face mask call on the
next
play gave the Warhawks a first down, but Randolph may have made
his
only mistake of the night on the next play allowing the ball to be
ripped out by the tackling Trojans and fallen upon at the Warhawk
39. On third down from the 35, just like the last game, Matt
Dean
broke through a number of tackles on his way to a 35 yard
touchdown run
and Clark Hankins' kick tied the score early in the second
quarter.
Not for long. Amazingly, Daleville only ran four offensive
plays
on three offensive possessions in the second quarter. The
first
was a no gain by Randolph. The next three were
touchdowns.
Randolph broke away for a 65 yard touchdown to give Daleville the
first
of those three second quarter touchdowns and their 7 point lead
was
restored. After a big sack, the Trojans fumbled the ball to
the
Hawks at the 37. On first down, quarterback Chris Stone
rared
back to throw for the endzone. It appeared the ball was
underthrown and was going to be intercepted, but somehow it
bounced off
the Trojan defender right into the hands of William Knight, who
trotted
into the endzone for a 37 yard touchdown catch and run and a 21 -
7
Daleville lead.
The Trojans picked up a first down on their next drive, but again
a
sack stalled the threat. Once again, a long punt was downed
at
the Warhawk 17. No matter. Stone pitched back to
Randolph
on first down, and as defenders converged on the runner, he rared
back
and found a wide open Knight beyond the defense as he cruised down
the
far sideline for an 83 yard halfback touchdown pass and
reception. The third touchdown in four scrimmage plays gave
Daleville a commanding 28 - 7 lead as the half neared. St.
James
got a chance to add a score before halftime after a punt return
was
fumbled by the Warhawks, but a 46 yard field goal attempt by
Hankins
came up just several yards short as the halftime buzzer sounded.
Miss Rachel Whitney was crowned as St. James' 37th Homecoming
Queen to
the usual fanfare of a Homecoming Queen and Court presentation,
and the
smiles continued as the Trojans drove impressively to start the
third
quarter. Will Martin completed a 19 yard pass to Matt Dean,
and
several plays later Martin was hit out of bounds after
scrambling. Chase Christian picked up 23 yards on a hard run
down
to the 2 on the next play, and a face mask penalty moved the ball
to
the 1, where Christian was rewarded with an easy touchdown run,
and
suddenly the lead was cut back to a manageable 14 points early in
the
third quarter.
After an onside kick attempt rolled only 8 yards, Daleville took
over
at the Trojan 48. Randolph's first carry was negated by a
holding
penalty. However, his next three carries of 11, 4, and 42
yards
were enough for his third touchdown of the game and another 21
point
Warhawk lead. St. James was three and out on their next
drive,
and a late personal foul gave Daleville a 15 yard headstart they
really
didn't need because Randolph carried one last time against the
tiring
Trojan defense for 52 yards and another touchdown. He was
rewarded with an early trip to the bench for the remainder of the
game
as Holms' sixth extra point led to the final margin of 42 - 14.
St. James was driving into Warhawk territory on the next drive,
but
fumbled after a long pass reception. Daleville returned the
favor
three plays later with their own lost fumble. However, on
the
next play, the final one of the third quarter, Martin's pass was
intercepted on the sidelines on a nice kneeling play by Joe
Beckham at
the Daleville 12. The Warhawks used up more time on the next
drive, nearly 5½ minutes, as they had used in the previous
two
quarters combined. They could only get as deep as the Trojan
38,
and pinned St. James with a punt. St. James could not
convert a
first down, and Knight returned a punt 25 yards to the Trojan
23.
The second string Daleville offense got little going, and Holms
was
called on to try a 44 yard field goal, which like Hankins' earlier
try
was straight but just short.
With time running out, the Trojans picked up first downs on two
long
runs by Clinton Freeman, but the clock expired before they had a
shot
at the endzone, and the Trojans appeared to be relegated to the
role of
spoiler for the remainder of the 2007 4A Region 2 season with
their
third region loss and three to play.
