St. James allowed the Daleville wishbone offense to travel 80
yards for
a
touchdown on their first drive of the game, but tightened up
and never
gave the Warhawks another
serious scoring threat, while two different quarterbacks led
the
Trojans down the field for touchdowns as St. James evened
their
regional
record at 2-2 with a hard fought
14-7 quickly moving field position oriented win over the
visiting
Warhawks.
St. James picked up 26 yards on two Michael Stabler carries on
the
first two plays of their initial drive, but had to punt
afterwards. Daleville took over on their own 20
and the
Warhawks Wishbone drove smartly, traversing 80 yards in 11
plays all on
the ground. Ricky Stewart had key runs of 15 and 17
yards, and he
was rewarded with the touchdown carry from the Trojan 3 for
the first
score of the game. Michael McHugh's extra point gave the
Warhawks
and early 7-0 lead.
The Trojan defense, smarting from the impressive drive, would
only give
up 95 yards to the Warhawks the remainder of the game.
After a
shanked Daleville punt went out of bounds at the Warhawk 38,
St. James
brought in backup Matt Dean to lead a scoring drive. A
23 yard
catch and run from Dean to Jeff Cowden moved the ball down to
the
15. A key defensive offsides penalty on fourth down from
the 6
resulted in a first down, and Dean kept the ball off of left
end on the
next play for the final 3 yards and a Trojan touchdown on the
third
play of the second quarter. Graham Sutter's extra point
tied the
game at 7.
A St. James fumble on their next drive gave Daleville
excellent field
position at the Trojan 33, but two plays later, Daleville
returned the
favor with their own lost fumble, the only two turnovers of
the
game. Neither team seriously threatened for the
remainder of the
half, and the score was deadlocked at 7. During the
halftime
festivities, Miss Elizabeth Slayton was crowned the 2005
Homecoming
Queen.
Daleville kept the ball for more than 7 minutes to start the
third
quarter, but could only get as close as the Trojan 25 before a
holding
penalty and a Justin Calloway sack pushed the Warhawks back,
forcing a
punt. The teams traded punts, of which there were 15
total in
this defensive struggle, but Graham Sutter's punt of 63 yards
from deep
in his own territory may have proven to be the biggest play of
the
game, changing the field position advantage mightily.
Early in
the fourth quarter, with Will Martin back at the St. James
helm, the
Trojans took over at their own 44. After an incomplete
pass and a
2 yard quarterback scramble, Martin rared back and found Bruce
Alter
between defenders 20 yards downfield. He wisely wove
around the
deepest defender and outraced chasers into the endzone on a 54
yard
catch and run for a Trojan touchdown. Graham Sutter's
extra point
gave St. James a 7 point lead with less than 9 minutes
remaining in the
game.
An intentional grounding penalty on Daleville on the next
drive cost
them big yardage, and St. James fielded the ensuing punt in
Warhawk
territory. Jeff Cowden smartly recovered a fumble after
a pass
reception for one first down, but the Trojans had to punt and
forced
the Warhawks deeper in their own territory for one last chance
drive. From their own 13, Daleville could gain no yards
on three
plays and had no choice but to punt. With 3 minutes
left, Martin
took charge and ran twice for 10 yards, each for first downs,
and
effectively ran out the clock to seal the crucial region
victory as the
returning alumni and current students "Danced in the Streets"
afterwards.
