McLemore Field. Game conditions: Partly cloudy,
comfortable, no wind. Game Temperature: 69
Brett Gantt threw again for over 200
yards and added three touchdown passes and some key fourth down
conversions, and Will Stansfield was successful on both of his field
goal attempts and two extra points as St. James won for the fourth
consecutive time at Montgomery Academy's McLemore Field, soundly
defeating the Eagles 26-7.
Neither team seriously threatened in the first quarter, as the first
five cumulative drives each ended in punts. On the Trojans' third
drive, which started near the end of the first quarter at their own 15
yard line, St. James travelled 85 yards in twelve plays. The
first of several long completions from Gantt to Chris Roberts went for
25 yards. Several plays later, Gantt converted a fourth down with
a quarterback sneak at the Eagle 40. Three plays later, Gantt
connected again with Roberts for 23 yards and a touchdown on a play
where he stretched the ball across the goal line while being tackled.
The extra point snap was bouncing and bobbled and no conversion
was attempted, but the Trojans had a 6-0 lead
early in the second quarter.
Montgomery Academy fumbled on the next play from scrimmage and Roberts
recovered on the Eagle 21. Another fourth down, with four to go,
was converted on a brilliant catch and run by Taylor Nelson of five
yards to the ten yard line. On first down, Ted Brewer carried
for eight yards, but the next two plays resulted in losses. On
fourth down, Will Stansfield was called on for the field goal attempt
and converted from 23 yards out, the first field goal made by either
team in a Trojan game the entire season. The kick pushed the lead
to 9-0 midway through the second quarter.
MA quarterback Greg Crews completed a 34 yard pass to Clay Steineker on
their next drive, but on the following play the Eagles fumbled again.
However, an offensive pass interference penalty on fourth down
ended the St. James drive. Three plays later though, the Eagles
committed their third straight turnover as a Crews pass was intercepted
by Drew Gunn at the Eagles 42 and
returned to the 21. Four plays later the Trojans had to convert
another
fourth down. This time, with one yard to go from the 12, Gantt
lifted
a pass to the back of the endzone which was snagged by the outstretched
arms
of Matt Ward for the touchdown. Stansfield's point this time was
true,
and with less than a minute to go, the Trojans held a solid 16 point
lead
going into halftime.
Each team managed to convert three first downs on long time-consuming
drives to start the third quarter, but neither team tallied on the
scoreboard.
The Trojan drive was stopped by a Anthony McCall interception at
the
Eagle 15, and the Academy drive ended with a failed fourth down attempt
at the Trojan 42. From there, a 12 yard pass from Gantt to Tyler
Murphy, a 17 yard pass from Gantt to Taylor Nelson, and a 14 yard run
by
Ted Brewer to end a quick third quarter advanced the ball to the Eagle
14.
The defense stiffened again, but Stansfield connected on another
field
goal, this one from 27 yards, to make the game a three possession
margin
at 19-0.
After an Eagle punt, St. James took only five plays to march 59 yards.
Chris Roberts outraced his coverage on a flag pattern for a 47
yard
catch and run touchdown, and Stansfield's second extra point concluded
the
Trojan scoring at 26.
Backup Eagle quarterback Tripp Swann came in and completed several
passes in the last seven minutes of the game. The Trojan bid for
a shutout remained intact, briefly, when they held MA on four
consecutive plays from the St. James eight yard line. However,
after a punt and two Trojan penalties, the Eagles finally dented the
scoreboard as Swann connected to Bennett Maddox on a middle screen play
with less than 100 seconds remaining in the game. Maddox's extra
point ended the scoring at 26-7 as the
onside kick attempt by the Eagles was unsuccessful afterwards and the
Trojans
ran down the clock with their seventh victory of the year in hand,
literally.
