Hornet Field, Beauregard. Game conditions: Mostly
clear Game Temperature: 84 Wind NE
3 - 5
The Beauregard Hornets attempted
65 rushing plays and only 3 passes in a strong ball control offense,
gathering over 300 yards of rushing while holding the ball for nearly
20 of 24 minutes
in the second half, ending a previous three year losing streak to St.
James
by defeating the Trojans 28-7.
Each team garnered first downs on their initial drives, but a penalty
on the Trojans' second drive led to the Hornets taking over on the
Trojan 43 after a punt. Beauregard moved down the field piece by
piece in 9 plays with quarterback Ladarius Webb and tailback Bennie
Holcey shouldering and alternating most of the load. Webb carried
the final six yards on the second play of the second quarter for the
touchdown. Brandon Kelly's kick was good, giving the Hornets a
7-0 lead. St. James'
strongest drive of the game followed. They started on their own
35,
and the Trojans converted four first downs, including one fourth down
conversion.
Will Thrasher's sweep of 21 yards gave the Trojans first and goal
at the Hornet 1. Two quarterback sneaks each inched the ball
forward,
but not into the endzone, and on third down a sweep play was stopped
for
a four yard loss. The Trojans attempted their first field goal of
the season, but the kick from the far hashmark was wide.
St. James regained the ball soon after, and a defensive pass
interference penalty moved them out to their own 40. However,
Hornet Ken Dowdell intercepted a pass and returned it to the Trojan 29.
Three plays
later, Webb scored his second touchdown from 23 yards out. The
snap
on the extra point attempt was bobbled, and the conversion failed, but
the huge turnaround gave the Hornets a 13 point lead with a minute plus
to go in the half. The Trojans actually had two possessions in
the
last 76 seconds of the half, but could get no further than the Hornet
45
on either.
After the second half opening kickoff was muffed out of bounds by the
Hornets at their own 8 yard line, things finally seemed to be going the
Trojans
way. However, Beauregard held the ball for the next 15 plays, the
key play being a 30 yard run by Holcey on a second down and 17.
The Trojans finally stiffened close to the goal line and forced
an incomplete pass on fourth down and 3 from the 6 yard line.
Four of the next five Trojans' plays were runs to Matt Ward, who
gained a total of 32 yards on the
plays. However, on the next play, the Trojans fumbled, the ball
was
picked up by Dowdell again, and returned 30 yards to the Trojan 22.
A penalty on the return started the drive on the 32, and an
excrutiating 9 plays
later, including an extended delay for an injury, Holcey carried in for
the
touchdown from 6 yards out on the third play of the fourth quarter.
Webb
completed a two point conversion pass to Shane Lake and the ensuing 21
point
lead appeared impossible to overcome.
For only two plays. After the kickoff was returned to the 37 yard
line, and a first down pass was incomplete, Brett Gantt found a wide
open Matt Burke past the Hornet defense and the beautiful throw, catch,
and 40 yard run after the catch had the Trojans in the endzone for the
first time in the evening. Will Stansfield's extra point cut the
lead back to 14 with still over 10 minutes remaining in the game.
However, by now, the persistent running by the Hornets and the
stout offensive line blocking appeared to be wearing down the Trojans.
After eight more plays on a similarly dutiful drive, Webb broke
loose on the longest run of the evening, 48 yards for his third
touchdown of the game, Beauregard's final score,
and the 28-7 margin of victory.
Matt Ward returned the following kickoff back to the Trojan 49, and a
Gantt to Taylor Nelson pass completion on the next play moved the ball
down to the Hornet 21. However, after three incomplete passes,
Gantt was intercepted by Lamar Blackmon at the 1 yard line on fourth
down. Beauregard managed to make one first down to escape the
shadow of their goalpost, and punted out to midfield. Four plays
later, the Trojans had the ball down to the Hornet 2, but sputtered.
A loss on a sweep play and a fumbled
snap gave the Trojans fourth down and goal from the 15. Gantt
completed
a pass to Taylor Nelson, but he only regained enough yardage to get
back
to the Hornet 2 in the last minute of the game, and Beauregard ran the
clock out to conclude the contest.
