November 2, 2001. McLemore Field. Game Conditions: Partly cloudy, light wind Game temperature: 68
The Trojan defense was solid, holding the Eagles to only 4 first downs and 12 yards rushing, while breaking open a close game with 3 fourth quarter touchdowns as St. James finished its regular season at 8-2 with its third consecutive win at Montgomery Academy's McLemore Field, 27-7.
The first drive of the game was a super dominant display of Trojan grind-it-out football. From their own 15, 19 consecutive rushing plays and seven first downs were highlighted by the return of Michael Brock's first offensive carries since the first game of the season, and he celebrated by carrying the final two yards for a touchdown. Marshall Darneille's extra point was good, and St. James held a 7-0 lead after a 9½ minute bone-crushing drive to open the game.
Montgomery Academy fumbled on their first drive, but St. James was stopped on downs early in the second quarter. Neither team threatened seriously to score until the last minute of the half, when a Trojan pass was intercepted at the Eagle 3 yard line on fourth down. However, St. James dominated time of possession (18:17 to 5:43) and offensive plays (36 to 11), but only managed the early touchdown.
Montgomery Academy fumbled on the first play of the second half, but a snap on a later Trojan field goal attempt went over the head of the kicker and the Eagles took over on their own 32. After an Eagle punt, St. James moved down the field thanks in great part to several untimely Eagle penalties. The drive again stalled, and a 27 yard field goal attempt was wide right. The Eagles were forced to punt again, and the Trojans finally righted their offense. From their own 41, Brock started the drive with a 19 yard run and added a 9 yard first down run. Alan Craft and Nathan Yates, who finished the game with over 110 yards rushing, added sizable gains. Yates took the ball the final 10 yards on the fourth play of the fourth quarter, and Darneille's extra point gave St. James a 14-0 lead with 9:59 remaining.
By now, the Eagles realized their rushing attempts against St. James were futile, with only 2 rushes on the night netting more than 3 yards, and one of those an 8 yard lost fumble. Neither team had completed a pass to its own team in the first three quarters, but MA's Ty Tyson tried 9 consecutive passes on the next drive, completing 7 of them. The final 34 yards were earned on a pair of 17 yard passes to Dexter Jackson and a touchdown to a well-covered Daniel Hackett. William Crum's extra point was successful, and suddenly the lead was cut in half, at 14-7, with just over 7 minutes remaining.
The Eagles planned to attempt an onside kick. After each team was penalized once for offsides, the ensuing kick went only 9 yards and the Trojans took over on the Eagle 49. Completely contrary to the first drive of the game, Nathan Yates burst off right tackle and broke loose for an instant 49 yard touchdown. Darneille's point again was good, and the lead was increased 21-7.
The Eagles fumbled a shotgun snap on the first play of their next drive, and St. James converted again from 41 yards out. Overcoming a holding penalty on a long keeper by quarterback Craft, Brock had two runs for 15 yards taking the ball to the 28. Ted Brewer, who played sparingly, carried for 7 and Josh Thomas, one of 10 Trojan ball carriers this night, carried on a fantastic wide sweep for the final 21. This time the extra point was wide, and the Trojans had a 27-7 lead. Four consecutive incomplete passes by the Eagles on the next drive turned the ball over, and St. James ran out the clock for their biggest point total and biggest winning margin ever over rival Montgomery Academy.
