October 1, 1999 7:00 PM Carlisle Field - HOMECOMING Game conditions: Clear Game Temperature: 71 Wind E 5
St. James celebrated Homecoming 1999 with a crowning of both Homecoming Queen Christine Cherry and the Catholic Knights, as the Trojans won their CCC record 13th consecutive Capital City Conference game, 41-0. The Trojans racked up 430 yards rushing, 307 of those in an explosive first half, and 476 total yards, cruising to victory.
Catholic started off the game with a successful onside kick, but turned the ball over on the second play of the game on a fumble. A five play 54 yard drive featured Matt Grooms runs of 21 and 19 yards, and Speed McDonald runs of 11, 2, and 1 yard for a touchdown only 2:15 into the game. The Nigel Guntharp extra point was good and the Trojans had a quick 7-0 lead.
After a Catholic punt, it took St. James only 3 plays to go 70 yards, with Wade Melton runs of 20 and 1 yards, and Grooms going up the middle for the final 49 and the second Trojan TD. The extra point boinked off the right upright, and the Trojans were up 13-0 with 5:33 to go in the first.
After a second Catholic punt, St. James moved 77 yards in 4 plays. A pass from Ryan Sexton to Grooms went for 14, a McDonald run went for 24, Melton ran for 2, and Grooms the final 37 for his second TD. Guntharp's PAT gave St. James a 20-0 lead in the last minute of the first quarter.
After a Catholic interception, a St. James fumble, and a failed fake punt by Catholic, the Trojans had the ball on the Knight 42. Five plays later, on a drive highlighted by a tough McDonald run of 28 yards, Sexton connected on a pass to Matt Grooms of 9 yards and his third TD of the game. The extra point gave the Trojans a 27-0 lead with 8:13 to go in the half. St. James had two chances to score inside the last minute of the half. An incomplete pass on fourth down from the 4 gave the Knights the ball, who promptly fumbled. St. James tried a QB sneak from the one on the last play of the half, but the play was stopped short, and the halftime lead stood at 27-0.
St. James scored on their first possession of the second half after a fine punt return by Guntharp. A Melton 14 yard run and two short defensive penalties extended the drive. Melton went in from the 2 before fumbling in the endzone, but was given credit for the touchdown. Guntharp's fourth extra point extended the lead to 34-0 midway through the third quarter.
The Trojans fumbled on their next possession, but the defense was solid the entire game, not allowing Catholic near the Trojans endzone. On the initial drive of the fourth quarter, the Trojans overcame a clipping penalty and, highlighted by a nice 3rd down and 22 pass from Sexton to Guntharp which covered 25 yards, Ashley Snipe carried the final two and Logan Markham (!) added the final extra point of the night for a 41-0 margin. The second teams offense and defense battled back and forth for the remainder of the game.
