STJ 6 0 0 0 6
The Trojans moved the ball on their first drive, aided by a roughing the kicker penalty, but stalled just inside Lions territory. On the Lions' first offensive play - a pitch to ninth grader (and already potential college prospect) Tim Castille went the distance, 68 yards, and Graham Wilson's extra point gave Briarwood a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
St. James retaliated quickly with an 80 yard scoring drive, highlighted by a McDonald 25 yard run, and runs of 30 and 11 by Wade Melton. Ryan Sexton went the final yard on a quarterback sneak. The extra point was blocked, but the Trojans were within one point at 7-6 with 3:46 still to go in the first quarter.
On the next drive's first play, Castille picked up a fumbled pitch and ran for what appeared to be another touchdown (49 yards), but the play was negated by a clipping penalty. Two plays later, Trojan Ashley Snipe intercepted a pass and returned it to the Lion 28 and momentum, for a rare moment, was in Trojan favor. The drive stalled and St. James turned the ball over on downs. The defenses dominated for the remainder of the half. Briarwood missed a 32 yard field goal early in the second quarter, and was intercepted on a fake field goal pass attempt one drive later. After switching possessions, a Briarwood punt was downed on the Trojan 7 as the half neared completion. Disaster struck on the first play, as a fumbled snap was garnered by the Lions' Alex Serota at the Trojans 6. It took them 4 plays, but quarterback Jeff Flannery snuck in from the one as time was running out. Wilson's extra point gave Briarwood a 14-6 halftime lead and a huge momentum swing.
On Briarwood's initial second half drive after a short kickoff, Castille darted up the middle for 41 yards and his second TD of the game. The extra point made the score 21-6 with 11:08 to go in the third quarter.
St. James was again forced to punt, and after a Castille return, the ball was again in Trojan territory. Four plays later, fullback Jason Ogletree rambled for 9 yards and what would be the final score of the game after the extra point, which gave Briarwood a 28-6 lead at the 7:52 mark of the third quarter.
The defenses again stiffened, as two Trojan drives ended in interceptions. The second string was called in late in the fourth quarter and marched nicely against the Lion second string defense - getting as close as the 15 yard line. However, a sack threatened any scoring threat in the last minute of the game, and the Lions secured victory - a hard fought Trojan effort against a team which outnumbered the Trojans manpower-wise nearly two to one.
