STJ 8 0 0 0 8
The first quarter was active offensively. After a St. James punt, Highland Home drove down the field and got as close as St. James' 20 yard line. Following a penalty and an incomplete pass, a field goal attempt by Doug Norman was short. The Trojans took over on the 20 and drove 80 yards in 6 plays. A wonderful deep pass caught the Squadron defense unprepared, as Ryan Sexton lofted to tight end Matt Salvia for 53 yards, down to the Squadron 16. Two consecutive 8 yard runs, by Ashley Snipe and Matt Grooms had the Trojans in the endzone. After an illegal substitution penalty by Highland Home, the Trojans opted for the two point conversion, and Grooms took the handoff up the middle for a Trojans 8-0 lead with 4:38 to go in the first quarter.
The remainder of the half featured fractured drives by both teams, with penalties affecting St. James for the second consecutive game, and turnovers for the most part affecting Highland Home. St. James wasted a late scoring opportunity after recovering a fumble in the last minute, as a Sexton pass fell into the hands of a Flying Squadron defensive back - the only Trojan turnover of the season thus far.
Highland Home returned after halftime with the momentum. A nearly 8 minute drive after the opening kickoff was boosted by two St. James 15 yard penalties (a personal foul and a pass interference). With fourth down and goal on the Trojan 8, QB Michael Hatten lofted a pass to Cornelius Brown, who outjumped and outmaneuvered the Trojan defensive back for a touchdown. A try for two failed on an incomplete pass, and the Trojans held on precariously to an 8-6 lead.
The Trojans could not manage a first down and punted - running only three offensive plays the entire third quarter. Highland Home began moving the ball again. On the first play, fresh running back Brown took a handoff for 44 yards before a TD saving tackle by Ryan Sexton. Later, a face mask penalty and a succeeding 10 yard run gave the Squadron first down on the Trojans 9. The defense tightened and on fourth down from the 11, on the first play of the fourth quarter, a decisive field goal was attempted and successful for Doug Norman. The 28 yarder had the Trojans trailing for the first time this season and for the first time in a long time during a regular season game, at 9-8.
The next two drives for St. James were as futile as the previous - on both occasions three offensive plays generated no first downs - and prospects for victory looked bleak. However, a determined defense gave the Trojans a last chance they didn't expect late. A forced fumble was recovered by Speed McDonald on the Squadron 40 with just over 4 minutes to play as Highland Home could not manage to run out the clock. Four consecutive runs netted 29 yards, and the Trojans had huge momentum and first down on the Squadron 11 with 2:12 to go. However, the three succeeding plays netted no yardage, including a Sexton sack, and backup field goal kicker Ashley Snipe was called in to attempt a late field goal from 28 yards out. The kick drifted wide right and was short, and Highland Home ran out the clock to preserve a hard earned 9-8 victory over the deflated Trojans.
