Saint James had just entered the AHSAA Top 10 Rankings at #
10, but the ranking was short-lived as the powerful UMS-Wright
Bulldogs, at the time ranked second themselves in 3A, came to
Montgomery and defeated the Trojans 28 - 7.
The Bulldogs intercepted a pass on the fourth play of
scrimmage, and several plays later Chad McFarland scored the
first of his two one yard touchdown runs. Bob Urquhart
was perfect on extra points for the evening, and his first
gave UMS-Wright an early 7 - 0 lead.
The Trojans would battle back midway through the second
quarter. Craig Bowman carried for a one yard quarterback
keeper touchdown and Jason Edwards' extra point tied the score
at 7. However, Denny Gardner returned the ensuing
kickoff 70 yards to the Trojan 10, and several plays later
McFarland earned the lead back for the Bulldogs with a one
yard run and the ensuing Urquhart point, making it 14 - 7
Bulldogs at halftime.
In the fourth quarter, Brett Boutwell threw two touchdown
passes, one each to Lyon Newell and Gardner, to wrap up the
scoring. The Bulldogs smashed the only serious second
half Trojan scoring threat late in the fourth quarter after
recovering a fumble.
